CONTRASTS – AT THE BURTON GALLERY We have a very interesting presentation of contrasts in sculpture. Richard Nash shows abstract sculpture and graphic works, while Denise Ford’s works are done in the classic representational mode. We have been pleased to display Richard Nash’s work previously. Denise Ford’s sculptures are new for Anacortes.

We add another dimension with our collection of Bernd and Tom Munsteiner sculptured gemstones. Burton Jewelers are pleased to show custom made pieces as well as loose gems. Our collection of these Munsteiner gem works is one of the largest in the United States. Richard Nash’s studio is on Whidbey Island and he has created many outstanding pieces of public sculpture.

Welcome to the 58th Anacortes Arts Festival

T

hank you for joining us this year and celebrating Peace, Love and Art. Whether you are escaping your busy life for a few hours or for the whole weekend, we hope that you find yourself joyful and inspired.

We think that there is no better place to escape the realities of life for a short while than at the Anacortes Arts Festival, in beautiful downtown Anacortes. With almost 300 booth artists, a firstclass fine art show, 40 musical entertainers, culinary delights galore, beer gardens to socialize in and activities for all ages….you will certainly find your happy place. In between visiting your favorite booth artisans, there are some happenings at the Festival that you won’t want to miss: • At Arts at the Port, take some time to be with “Say Their Names.” The Anacortes Regeneration Project is an artist driven response to the phenomenon of mass shootings in America. Over thirty Skagit Valley artists have created over 970 individual ceramic rocks, each displaying the name, event, date and age of an individual killed in 84 mass shootings in America. Included in those names are 37 children under the age of 11, and 40 Washington State first responders. • While you are taking in Arts at the Port, you will be inspired by another collaborative installation. The Festival is honored to showcase a youth project coordinated by Voices of the Children. Look for the butterflies and read their messages. • The Working Studios is one of the most active areas of the Festival with a range of artists demonstrating the creative process. Come see prominent artist Alfred Currier painting the twelfth and final mural in the Tommy Thompson Mural Project, featuring the colorful Skagit landscape. A special feature this year will be graffiti, being painted by artists Eric Gonzalez and Leo Salazar. • Back by popular demand are Nearly Dan on the Manieri Jazz Stage and Chance McKinney and John Van Deusen on the Main Stage. With more than 40 acts on three stages, including a number of new-to-the-festival groups, we are sure that you will find some music that will entertain you. • In addition to the tasty food faire found in our Food Court at 3rd & Commercial, be sure to visit our Food Truck Alley on 8th Street. Trucks on either side of the main drag will have your taste buds watering with their trendy cuisine. • We invite you to step up on the sidewalk and visit our local restaurants and retail shops. Our downtown merchants are ready to welcome you into their businesses like an old friend. The Anacortes community loves the Festival and they can’t wait to see you!

• We love the image this year that has inspired our Peace, Love and Art tagline! It’s a piece by artist Barton DeGraff and is certain to bring smile to so many faces. You can Buy a Shirt or Poster at the Information Booth on 5th & Commercial. With the support that you offer through purchases and donations this weekend, the Anacortes Arts Festival is able to give back to creative programs year-round in our community. With more than $65,000 gifted this year to art organizations, youth art programs, art in schools, public art, and artists, we feel genuinely grateful to be a part of your weekend. Thank you again for celebrating a little Peace, Love and Art with us. We are so glad you are here. Peace, Meredith McIlmoyle Festival Director

Arts at the Port Allen Family Focus Gallery This year’s theme “Pattern & Structure” welcomes three talented artists to the Allen Family Focus Gallery. Participants include Cathy Schoenberg from Anacortes, Jill Nordfors Clark from Seattle and Charissa Brock from Portland. This Gallery is selected and curated by the Festival Curatorial Team. Cathy Schoenberg is deeply rooted in the nature, wildlife and people in Skagit Valley. Her paintings depict wild, weedy areas meant to make one feel engulfed by seemingly unkempt nature, while her drawings take on a sense of the outer universe and/or the inner molecular world we can’t see with the naked eye. Jill Nordfors Clark uses hog gut as the basis of her work (also known as sausage casings). She combines it with needle lace (a form of embroidery used in making lace with a needle and thread) to make three-dimensional forms. Her latest work incorporates photographs, drawings, bones, and vintage lace.

Schoenberg

Nordfors Clark

Charissa Brock is a fiber artist working with bamboo, a giant grass that has been used for centuries to create baskets and other everyday objects. She integrates wood, glass, paper and thread as visual accents and structural components. Her abstract sculptures are crafted using basketry, woodworking, and fiber art techniques.

Arts at the Port – Special Installations

T

he Festival is taking a new approach to our Youth Artist exhibit this year by including Voices of the Children as our youth arts partner. Voices of the Children instructors organized a day of poetry, writing, film, and clay-making projects with girls ages 12 – 18, from Skagit County and Syria. The topics of discussion were womens’ challenges in our local and global society. The resulting art installation is made up of individual ceramic butterflies – each one a colorful representation of hope, greeting folks as they enter Arts at the Port.

S

ay Their Names…the Anacortes Regeneration Project is an artist driven response to the phenomenon of mass shootings in America. Thirty Skagit Valley artists have created over 970 individual ceramic rocks, each displaying the name, event, date and age of an individual killed in 84 mass shootings in America. The rocks are being assembled into a large Cairn installation. Also included is a video that incorporates writing from students and adults who have been affected by gun violence.

I

Volunteers

t takes an army of over 250 highly dedicated volunteers to help make our Festival weekend run smoothly. We have people working as art docents at the fine art show, manning the information booth, delivering lunches to our booth vendors, booth sitting when artists need a break, working in the beer and wine gardens … plus so much more! Volunteers are the heart of our organization. We are fortunate to have so many community members excited to give of their time to welcome visitors and support our efforts. Our new online signup makes it easy to get involved. Volunteers of the Year

T

his year’s Festival Volunteers of the Year are Ria Kilburn and Mike Thamert. Though they each bring unique skills, they both go above and beyond as willing team players. Ria works in our youth area during the Festival and was also very involved with Buffett Beach Bash in April. Mike served as Festival Production Coordinator – the BIG job of physically putting the Festival together (and then taking it down). Many thanks for their great work! 22 2019 Anacortes Arts Festival
