Welcome to the

36th Annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival! The 36th annual Tulip Festival begins on Thursday, March 28 with the Gala presented by Judd & Black Appliance and Peoples Bank. Said festival president Cindy Verge “Welcome to another season. We are happy to have you!” We encourage visitors to participate in our Photo Contest presented by North Coast Credit Union. Submit your photos (one per week during April); we choose weekly finalists and announce the winners in various categories at the end of the festival. The winning photographers receive a signed 2019 poster and will have their photo published in the 200,000 copies of the festival brochure in 2020. Full rules and details will appear on our Facebook page and website in March. Each spring the Skagit Valley welcomes tourists from all 50 states and countries all over the world to enjoy hundreds of acres of colorful blooms. Visitors are greeted with a huge variety of activities for the whole family, spread throughout the area over the month of April. In 2018 people came from eight Canadian provinces, every state, and 86 countries from around the world! The mission of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is to coordinate and promote a countywide spring celebration of the tulip bloom, in commemoration of the valley’s annual tulip harvest, and to be an advocate for Skagit Valley agriculgoskagit.com

They are the lifeblood of the festival and we appreciate them very much.” said Verge. What to See & Do

WELCOME from page 7

The 2019 Tulip Festival will run from April 1-30. Check Tulipfestival.org for updates on blooms, a calendar of events, maps and places to stay, eat and shop. Said Cindy, “We are always working to keep the festival fresh and fun. The Skagit Farm to Pint Festival and 2K/5K Family Fun Run will return this year along with a newly sanctioned Chili Feed event sponsored by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce and an expanded Tulip Charm Princess Party.” The festival keeps growing in scope; this year there are more than 40 Tulip Festival sanctioned events and activities. The events are spread throughout the valley in cities from Sedro-Woolley to Anacortes, Mount-Vernon, Burlington and La Conner. Many events are fundraisers for local charities including the Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue (April 6-28 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily at Mount Vernon’s Hillcrest Lodge). Visit the events page on tulipfestival.org for a complete list of new and classic events. Be sure to visit Christianson’s Nursery, Schuh Farms and tulip growers RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town. You will be able to order bulbs, buy cut flowers and mementos, eat, take photos and much more. continued on page 9

Tulip Festival Suppliers Festival Merchandiser Bellingham artist Jody Bergsma returns in 2019 for her final year as the official Tulip Festival merchandising supplier. Jody was hired in summer 2015 because of her experience creating and producing merchandise for other tulip festivals and her vision for the Tulip Festival’s merchandise offerings. Said Jody, “I have loved my time bringing products to the thousands of spring seeking tulip lovers. Every trip to Skagit Valley brings its own gifts of beauty and wonder; even more so now that it is my last season. I will miss the sights and all my tulip friends.” Jody’s Bellingham based merchandising company creates and manufactures all the festival’s souvenirs. Each year she has refined and expanded the product offerings based on demand and merchandising trends. Last year she added a glass cutting board, pot holder and an embroidered baseball cap. This year she provided six new tulip paintings as “bonus tulip art” to help raise money for the festival from their sales. Traditional merchandise includes posters, cards, magnets and mugs plus coloring books, fleece blankets, multiple garments, glass coaster sets, Christmas ornaments, journals, key chains, mini matted prints, and more. Jody began visiting the beautiful Skagit Valley tulip fields as a child, brought her children there in the 1980s to take pictures in the fields 18

and continues to this day. Said Jody, “As a person of Dutch heritage I am doubly privileged to create the merchandise for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Not only am I able to spend the entire month of April among my favorite flowers, it also gives me the opportunity to promote Skagit County; which is one of the

most beautiful places on Earth.” Bergsma is a well-known Bellingham watercolor painter with a diverse painting style that has developed over many years and literally thousands of paintings. Jody’s wa-

2019 Official Poster The Tulip Festival kicks off in November with the official poster unveiling celebration at Skagit Valley Gardens. Sponsored by Heritage Bank, the event is the first opportunity to see the new poster and products for the upcoming Tulip Festival. Each year a committee of community volunteers selects a local artist to create an official poster, which is unique to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Local artists submit their applications and the winner is free to choose their medium and style in a way that will interpret their vision of the festival and the tulips of Skagit Valley. Bellingham artist Ben Mann was chosen to create the 2019 official poster. Mann’s art practice is founded on a BFA in illustration from San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. As a full-time artist, Ben creates in many different avenues; commercial projects range from murals to menus and greeting cards, and his fine artworks hang in local businesses. He also plays an active role in the public elementary schools, with a two-hour ‘Mr. Acrylic’ workshop that he brings into local classrooms, as a specialist via the Allied Arts Education Project. Some schools employ him with two-week residencies that result in collaborative, permanent murals that will spark the imaginations of future students.

Festival poster. Bergsma will also be designing official apparel and many other products using the poster art.

Ben’s Tulip Festival poster is an original acrylic on canvas. Said Mann, “I took great inspiration from the sense of community engendered by our beautiful agricultural legacy. My painting strives to capture the visceral accuracy, how spellbinding it feels to stand by the road and take it all in.”

Ben will sign your poster from 10 a.m. - 6:30 pm and have other pieces available at Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde gift shops on April 4, 12, 18 and 26. Tulip Town hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; RoozenGaarde hours are from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

When asked how he felt about being chosen to paint the poster for the 36th annual Tulip Festival he replied, “It’s an honor to be invited to make the design and I appreciated the balance of art direction and creative freedom that was afforded me.”
