Welcome to Sedro-Woolley

Bob Dylan, once wrote a song entitled “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Although it evokes another era, the fact is that many things are changing in Sedro-Woolley. Our downtown district is vibrant with unique shops. BYK Construction is renovating the old grocery store as Pioneer Marketplace and along with the new library a welcoming west entrance on State Street is evolving. Hwy 20 (Moore Street) is seeing growth as well as we welcomed Savibank, Allstate Insurance office and the John L. Scott real estate office on the East side of town. Experience Sedro-Woolley

Photo by Andy Porter Photography It is an exciting time to be living in Sedro-Woolley. We are experiencing continued growth in our downtown business district, welcoming unique stores, a variety of restaurants, and soon a new grocery store and library. Sedro-Woolley is known for its Loggerodeo™, but there are festivals that occur throughout the year, and we invite you to join us as we celebrate Woodfest, Blast from the Past, Founders’ Day, or the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting. We enjoy sharing our heritage with visitors. We have maintained that hometown feel and community spirit that is probably experienced more during Loggerodeo™ than any other event. The

4th of July has been celebrated in SedroWoolley for 121 years, and Loggerodeo™ is the longest running celebration in the State of Washington. From the chainsaw carving, log show and carnival, to the parade and climatic fireworks, Loggerodeo™ provides something for everyone. Thanks to our city council, past and present, there are a number of parks to enjoy in Sedro-Woolley. From spring to fall you will find families, friends, and class reunions gathering at one of our city parks, and we hope you will have the opportunity to experience our wellgroomed and family friendly parks. In addition, we have several playing fields that get great use by little league, soft

ball, pee-wee football, and soccer teams. As we celebrate our 121th birthday this year, we continue to emphasize our unique heritage and the attributes that make us a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Sedro-Woolley is innovative and progressive, achieving success in development while maintaining our small-town Americana feel. There is much to be proud of and celebrate here in Sedro-Woolley and we welcome all to join us. I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as Sedro-Woolley’s Mayor and I hope to see you around town or at one of our city’s events. Julia Johnson, Mayor of Sedro-Woolley

E d u c at i o n Sedro-Woolley community is key to student success A key goal in the SedroWoolley School District strategic plan is to ensure responsible allocation of resources to maximize student learning. During the past five years, the school district has enjoyed a healthy general fund balance while adding additional classroom support that includes music, art, special programs, and the expansion of programs and services at every elementary school, as well as the middle and high schools. In addition, the district has successfully completed the implementation of the safety and technology capital levy by providing needed security measures at all of its school facilities as well as establishing one-to-one computing in all of its schools. This levy has been retired, reducing the local school tax rate. The district has also sustained an aggressive schedule of maintenance and repairs at our facilities that include projects such as painting, roof repair, HVAC repair, and ADA compliance. We are fortunate to have a skilled maintenance staff to make these needed and ongoing repairs, saving the district from escalating construction costs.

upgraded security measures in every school facility. However, the district does have major project needs including roofs, boilers, and window replacements in several of its schools. The district is experiencing enrollment growth resulting in the addition of portable classrooms at most of our school sites. The cost for these types of projects can be has high as $1.5 million each. To address major projects, the district has established an ongoing facilities committee that is meeting bimonthly. The charge of the committee is to determine next steps as it relates to asking the community to support a capital levy or attempting another capital bond to replace Evergreen Elementary. The committee will also create a longterm plan to accommodate student growth and aging facilities. The Sedro-Woolley School District will continue to work with its community partners for the benefit of our students. And they will continue to be good stewards of community

resources because they believe that “community is key to our success” in order to have a great school system. School information The Sedro-Woolley School District is 395 square miles and serves approximately 4,540 students being at 11 sites. The district serves the communities of Sedro-Woolley, Lyman, Samish, Hamilton, Big Lake and Clear Lake. Transportation: If your student will be riding the bus please call the transportation office at 360-855-3504 before the start of the school year to confirm bus routes and pick-up/drop-off times and locations. If you have questions about the free and/or reduced lunch price application please call the food services department at 360-855-3515. Follow the district on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ SedroWoolleySchoolDistrict/ and check www.swsd.k12.wa.us for more information.

Being good stewards of district resources is a primary goal outlined in the district’s strategic plan. SedroWoolley has great school system with an outstanding staff serving its children. Currently Sedro-Woolley has a historically low local levy and bond rate below $2.00. Recent examples of being good stewards include the Cascade Middle School renovation and replacement that came in on budget and on time, as well as the safety and technology capital levy that significantly 8

Sedro-Woolley Museum The Sedro-Woolley museum has been part of the community for 27 years this summer. The museum is a cherished resource for both Sedro-Woolley residents and international visitors. Because of broad local support, most items on display were donated by members of the community and the museum is operated by an all-volunteer staff. In October, 2016 Patty Boettcher took over as president while long-time museum President Carolyn Freeman assumed the roles of executive director and treasurer. Patty was a loyal museum volunteer for more than ten years before joining the board in 2013 which led to her transition as president.
