125 Years! Let the Fun Begin-- Again!

Can you remember your first time at the Skagit Fair? Cotton candy to share….a galloping mare…the hypnotist’s stare…scent of churros in the air? We are preparing to bring you the 125th year of the Skagit Fair with all of the traditional foods, fauna, funambulists, and fun-filled fair-flavored festivities.

Emcee, Todd ‘Young’ will bring hysteria harmonious and amusive antics as he unveils the array of entertainers, musicians on the SICBA mainstage, while Monique Brigham and her crew spin four-days of frenzied fun on the Community Stage. The perpetual parade of passionate performers will fascinate and captivate the throngs… with juggling batons, rhythmic songs, and a whole lot of pom poms. And don’t forget to visit the Adry’s Latin Stage where The Mount Vernon Mariachi and Folklorico Ensemble will awe you with their colorful clothing, traditional music, and cultural dance routines.

Bounce, flip, and tumble your way to the cheerleader competition. Our Cheer at the Fair event will have cheerleaders competing in a showdown that’s sure to be full of town pride, team spirit and rigorous competition. Come cheer them on as they twist and shout their way to the mainstage to Rally the Valley! Rustle up your neighbors and family because the larger the caravan and the more raucous the applause, the better chance your favorite squad holds the trophy high when the contest concludes.

Come see what’s behind the curtain with the return of the mindboggling talents of magician Sterling Dietz! Who knows, maybe this year he’ll pull mascot ‘Rasta Billie’ out of his hat – because why not add a little baa-rilliant twist to his bag of tricks? The FlippenOut Extreme Trampoline show will have you jumping out of your seats with their high-flying stunts and gravity defying flips. Once inside, the free entertainment will be nonending, with the Roaming Wren School of Juggling, minigolf, Cowboy Tricks with Leapin’ Louie, and a whole lot more!

Feeling thirsty? The Kiwanians will be serving cold cervezas, perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot fair day. And don’t forget to join Don Wick, our guest of honor, for some ‘tales near the ales’ located just inside the historic Evergreen Pavilion. His stories are the perfect pairing for a refreshing brew.

So come one, come all, and enjoy the magic, the flips, the cheers, the beers and the steers. The Skagit County Fair is the place to be for fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Let’s make this fair one for the record books!

County Rose

Friday 8:30 p.m.

Formed in 2023 by a diverse group of musicians who bonded over a common appreciation of country and americana music genres, County Rose is a seven-piece band from Bellingham, Washington. Said founding member and bass player AJ Simmons, “Each guy is a pro player, involved in other projects with a pretty big range of musical influences including funk, soul, jazz, rock and roll, folk, Irish music, and heavy metal.”

County Rose features Cote Hill on vocals, Walker VanWingerden on acoustic guitar, Chris Glass on fiddle, Mike Pruess on pedal steel guitar, Steven Wayne on electric guitar, AJ Simmons on bass, and Kevin Chryst on drums. The band also features special guest artist and vocalist Carrie Beiber in some of their shows. “She has added a lot to the overall sound of the songs and brings beautiful, soulful harmony with Cote,” said AJ.

As far as the inspiration for the band, AJ explained that he and drummer Kevin Chryst have been longtime friends who both grew up listening to country music. “We recognized a large gap of bands in the region that were performing the kind of music that we enjoy listening to. We also noticed a big surge in the popularity of country music and thought it would be a good niche to fill. With County Rose we get to play a wide range of country music that means a lot to us.”

County Rose performs country standards from the 1970s-1990s and mixes in some modern country hits, which has proven to be a winning formula for their multi-generational audiences. “We have chosen our song catalog with the hopes of putting on a great show that appeals to people of all ages.” said AJ. Their high-energy performance will make you want to put on your favorite boots and hat, grab your partner, and swing around the dance floor.

Outside of the Fair, you can catch County Rose on their Burn the Breeze Summer Tour this year at locations around Whatcom and Skagit Counties. They are especially excited about their bookings at the Skagit County Fair this August and the Lynden Whiskey Walk in September. “We are thrilled to be asked to perform at the Fair,” said AJ. “We are looking forward to it. It will be one of the highlights of our summer. When we first started this band, this is exactly the kind of event we wanted to perform at in the area.”

This group means a lot to me personally because I bring them quality music products and they bring something back to the community. This year, in addition to playing an additional day at the County Fair on the Latin stage by the Carnival, they will be opening the main stage for El Dasa.”

The events kick off on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. with DJ Frank. Next, Norteño and Sierreño group, Jose Rangel Y Su Nueva Alianza, and Grupo Supremo De Tierra Caliente will perform. This style of music is from the southern coast of Mexico. Supremo De Tierra Caliente will close the stage that night.

Friday is Latin rock night in Spanish and cumbia starting at 5:00 p.m. After DJ Frank, Voz Vibrato, Africa Violeta, and Sonora Vainilla will perform.

Saturday, the entertainment starts at 12:00 p.m.

with DJ music. Recuerdo De Oaxaca, Mount Vernon Mariachi, Los Hermanos Gonzalez from Yakima, and Los Faraones Del Norte USA will perform throughout the day. Don’t miss Sonora Vainilla and featured Latin performer, El Dasa, on the main stage between 8:00 p.m. – 10:15 p.m.!

Sunday kicks off with DJ music at 12:00 p.m. Throughout the day, 16-member band, La 4TA Banda, and Zona Kalida will perform. This type of music is very popular because of its unique Latin style.

Adriana is excited about a new partnership: “I’m thrilled to announce that for the first time, ICONOS MAGAZINE, a prestigious publication in the Latin music industry, is supporting the Latin stage at the Skagit Fair! Their promotion extends our reach both locally in the Northwest and internationally. As the organization that coordinates all acts on the Latin stage, Adrys Marketing & Concerts is always seeking growth opportunities for everyone involved in the Fair. This collaboration is a significant milestone for our community! We also want to thank our local business sponsors who are supporting the stage.”

Adriana shared, “For me, the Latin stage is very important. It has been part of my professional growth in everything I do today. Now I find myself traveling to different parts of the USA managing talent but I will never forget where I started from and I am committed to helping my community to have a good show with local as well as regional and international talent. I will always be grateful to the Fair for continuing to give me the confidence to help them with something so important to their event, which is not only the Latin stage but the entire Fair in general! I can’t wait for this exciting Skagit County Fair 2024!”

FEATURED LATIN ARTIST: EL DASA

El Dasa is a charting, twice nominated Latin Grammy-nominated Mexican singer and actor from Hermosillo, Sonora. He was born on July 27, 1989 and named after the Russian footballer, Rinat Dasayev, of whom his father was an admirer. His life was the inspiration for the El Vato television series that aired on NBC Universo in 2016 and 2017.

At age 15, El Dasa’s music career began when he became the lead singer of Banda Costa Azul, from Hermosillo, Sonora. He participated in the last edition of Mexico’s La Academia 6: Última Generación, but he was eliminated in the second round. At age 18, he emigrated to Los Angeles where he was hired by Vicente Fernandez as his driver, where El Dasa would sing for his idol. The Mexican icon was moved by El Dasa’s singing and invited him on-stage with him at the Gibson Amphitheater to duet on “Amor de los Dos.” Under Fernandez’ patronage, El Dasa was signed to Fonovisia where he began cutting singles and touring with top-level artists, including Fernandez, La Arrolladora Banda el Limón, and El Coyote y Su Banda.

LATIN ENTERTAINMENT SPONSORS

While his 2012 debut album, Pa’ La Raza didn’t chart, his 2014 album, Alegre y Enamorado, topped the Mexican Regional Albums chart and hit number two on the Top Latin albums. It also entered the bottom half of the Top 200 and was nominated for two Latin Grammys. A slew of singles from fast-paced romantic corridos to tender ballads from both albums proceeded to chart as El Dasa toured to promote his recordings. El Dasa recently scored his second top 10 placement on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart from this third studio album released through Fonovisa and Universal Music Latino. In late 2020 he was declared the winner of the first season of Tu cara me suena (American TV series).

VUELTA LA LUNA

Thursday-Sunday

Showtimes: 12:30, 3:30, 6:30 p.m.

Come one come all to the Vuelta La Luna Variety Circus! Vuelta is a traveling variety circus made up of a curious collection of aerialists, dancers, fire-breathers, clowns, acrobats, jugglers, stilt walkers, and more! This is a FREE

event. The circus comes up with new performance material every season with a family forward focus on fun! Audiences will be entertained with character driven shows including clown skits, aerialists from space, a balancing chair routine, and experimental acts!

The cast is made up of local artists from the Pacific Northwest region. They will perform three shows daily, about 20 minutes each. After each performance, the circus ring will be open for poses and pictures, as well as teaching a first move or lesson! Costumed jugglers and entertainers will be doing roving acts in between performances. There will be an interactive Kids Zone next to the tent with big games like Jenga and cornhole, custom-made hula hoops, and a box of costumes and props for a dress up “selfie” circus. New additions this year include bubble machines and a miniature High-Striker – are you strong enough to hit the bell?

Said Ring Master Jason Barker, “As a traveling circus, we love to meet new people as we inspire and teach kids (and big kids too) the skills

it takes to have fun at the circus. The Skagit County Fair is a great place to do that! Last year was our first time and we had a whole lot of fun; our biggest show had almost 500 people. Families were excited about having something to do without additional cost and the kids loved the acts and interacting with us after the performances. We are looking forward to trying out some new things this year and providing more fun for the whole family.”

4-H YOUTH PROGRAMS

The 4-H youth program is volunteer driven and community based it was started at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the future of rural youth. It consists of a community of more than six million members from ages nine through nineteen and 60 million alumni from across America.

Skagit county 4-H just celebrated the 100th anniversary in 2022 of having clubs in the county, The clubs emphasize learning, leadership/life skills, healthy living, citizenship and science through classes, hands-on projects, and community service. Students can choose from a variety of projects in the areas of technology, human sciences, large and small animals, science and engineering, natural resources, and citizenship and leadership.

Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences, travel the world, become involved in their community through service, develop healthy youth/adult partnerships and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting. In Skagit County, 300 youth are organized into 23 clubs and mentored by 60 adult volunteer Leaders. Adult volunteers are screened and trained to mentor youth in the projects the youth is interested in.

If you are interested in becoming a 4-H leader, please contact Dorothy.elsner@wsu.edu

Children ages 5- 18 can join 4-H; visiting with leaders and members at the fair is a great way to find a good fit for an individual’s interests. 4-H members can compete with their projects in contests at the local, state, regional, or national levels and also attend conferences and events. 4-H has four Essential

Elements: Belonging, Generosity, Mastery, and Independence. These topics give youth a safe place to “Learn as they Do”, generate positive youth/adult partnerships, and feel a part of a bigger community. The 4-H motto is “Making the Best Better”. You will see these values reflected in the youth when you take time to visit and talk with 4-H members at the fair.

Member enrollment begins each fall in October, if you are interested in joining 4-H please contact Dorothy.elsner@wsu.edu

Says Dorothy Elsner WSU Extension Skagit County 4-H Program Coordinator: “4-H thrives in Skagit County due to incredible support from the Skagit County community. The generosity of our community enables Skagit County 4-H to continue our mission in raising responsible, thoughtful and generous leaders for our future.”

4-H EXHIBITS AND CONTESTS

The 4-H building (Building A) is full of interesting still-life exhibits

and 4-H in Action demonstrations. Building C houses the dog project and show ring, dog projects show in obedience and agility through an obstacle course; handlers exhibit dogs both on and off leash. The Pavilion barn is the home of livestock projects; Dairy, Beef and along with an exhibition of Shooting Sports. Goats and Sheep are housed and shown across the fairgrounds in Building F. Building E is the Small Animal Barn, this barn fills up with Rabbit, Cavy, Cat and Poultry projects. The Horse barns and the Horse arena is busy all day with many different horse performances. New time this year, a new time. The Skagit Junior Livestock Show will be held in the morning of Saturday August 10. This is where animals raised for market are auctioned off. This is a great opportunity to support 4-H and FFA members. Take a look at the enclosed schedule for many different activities and contests going on at the Fair this year!

Future Farmers of America was founded by a group of young farmers in 1928, their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. Today, FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers, it also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientist, business owners and more. For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the industry of agriculture.

The National FFA organization now has 850,823 members in 8,995 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization is part of the high school courses in more than 300 careers in the food, fiber and natural resources industry including animal science, horticulture, agricultural mechanics and natural resources.

The FFA motto: “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” and the chapter’s activities are planned to help students do all of this.

Skagit County has three FFA chapters:

The Burlington-Edison FFA chapter has a long tradition of involving its members in the many different facets of agriculture that the Skagit Valley area has to offer. Students take pride in exhibiting their various projects at the fair each summer, and during the school year are involved in everything from Trap-

FFA

shooting and Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems to Floriculture and Nursery Landscape and Veterinary Science, Food Science and Leadership training in many different ways.

Mount Vernon FFA is one of the first five chapters in Washington State! We’re also the home to the first female National FFA Officer, Julie Smiley. Throughout the year our chapter is dedicated to community service and leadership; we work on projects with Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, Skagit County Farm Bureau, and other organizations. Besides animal projects, students participate in Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems and Veterinary Science competitions and their activities include many options for students to practice their leadership skills in the community.

Sedro-Woolley FFA is active in the Floriculture and Nursery Landscape competitions hosted by FFA as well as Logging Rodeo and Trapshooting activities. Their activities are about getting outdoors - whether it’s to tend to animals, practice for competitions, or explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The chapter emphasizes leadership and personal development through action and involvement and we strive to offer members as many new and exciting experiences as possible.
