THE ANACORTES SPRING WINE FESTIVAL offers a weekend of special events to enjoy! Welcome to the 7th annual Spring Wine Festival! Your trip through the tulip-filled fields of Skagit County has brought you to Fidalgo Island and the City of Anacortes on the edge of the Salish Sea. Our festival features 32 Washington State wineries, small plates from six local restaurants, and chocolate and cheese tastings from artisan producers here in Skagit County. The 32 wineries represent the spectrum from founding members of the state’s wine industry to emerging powerhouses. All of the wines at the festival are available for purchase with a 10% discount at the wine area. April is an active month in Anacortes. The flowers are blooming, boats are out on the water, and hikers are exploring the trails around Fidalgo Island. If you are here for the weekend there is a long list of events to enjoy. Many of our local restaurants will be hosting winemaker dinners on Friday, April 10th. These dinners are a great way to explore wines from your favorite winery and find exciting new food and wine pairings. You can learn more about these dinners and the Sunday brunch at A’Town Bistro on the next page. The Anacortes Spring Boat Show will be taking place at the Cap Sante Marina Friday, April 10th through Sunday April 12th. Enjoy the fresh sea air as you walk the docks and survey over 75 boats ranging up to 65 feet. Talk with experts from all fields of boating and find electronics and rigging to get you ready for the spring boating season. Start your Saturday morning at the Anacortes Farmers Market at the Depot Event Center on the corner of 7th Street and R Avenue. Savor a freshly made pastry as you stroll the open-air aisles filled with locally grown produce and artisan crafts. After the festival, enjoy live music at multiple downtown venues from 5pm-midnight. Learn more about each group performing on page 21. Guests can also attend the public opening of the “Art in Bloom” fine art show at the Depot Event Center from 6-9pm. The artists will be in attendance along with wine and light refreshments. On Sunday guests in Anacortes can enjoy breakfast or brunch at one of the city’s many restaurants then hit the Tommy Thompson Trail or explore Washington Park. Visitors can also get their sealegs with one of the sightseeing tours or kayak companies that will be open and out on the water to spot spring whale migrations. Learn more about these companies at our Visitor Center at 819 Commercial Avenue. The library will also be hosting a free jazz concert from 2-3:30pm at 1220 10th Street. AntoLin Cellars offers a boutique collection of expressive and noteworthy wines that are equally appealing in value. In 2009, founders Tony and Linda Haralson, long-standing residents in the Yakima community, turned their dreams of owning and operating a winery into a reality after developing their estate vineyard. Their Riesling, Carmenere, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on their 5-acre estate vineyard, Glacier. They also obtain Chardonnay, Merlot, Viognier and Syrah, from select sites in the Yakima and Columbia valleys. The name, AntoLin, is a collective of their first names, signifying their partnership.

The Bunnell Family Cellar specializes in small, handmade lots of wine from a number of traditional Rhône Valley grape varieties including Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, Counoise and Viognier. They produce both single vineyard varietals, “vins de l’endroit,” and also unique blends, “vins de l’esprit,” that celebrate traditions of the Southern Rhône Valley. The Bunnell Family Cellar’s newest introduction “BDX”, houses their Malbec, Petit Verdot, and their Bordeaux Blend, Petit Bec.

Cedar River Cellars’ mission is to produce refreshing, meticulouslycrafted, and sensorially pleasing wines from Washington State vinifera.

Kay Simon and Clay Mackey combined their extensive experience in winemaking and viticulture to begin Chinook wines in 1983. Since then, Chinook has become synonymous with a limited amount of highly acclaimed dry wines produced from Yakima Valley Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Chinook’s selectively marketed, handmade wines are staples of Washington’s finest wine retailers and on the wine lists of such celebrated Seattle area restaurants as Dahlia Lounge, Adrift, Luc and Local 360. As of 2014, Chinook’s wines are available only in Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho and Montana.

Cougar Hills Vineyard is located a stone’s throw from the site of the original Seven Hills Vineyard planted 28 years ago that began the Walla Walla legacy of quality vineyards. Golden’s Legacy is named for the medical doctor who originally lived on the land. Eighty-five years ago, he built the home that the Cougar Crest Winery owners live in today, and planted white wine grapes. Rock Bottom, next to Cougar Hills Vineyard, shares many of the same soil and weather similarities as Cougar Hills Vineyard. 8

Winemaker Judy Phelps has a Master of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Connecticut and worked for many years in research and development at Pfizer. After retiring, she pursued her passion for wine, completing the Winemaking Certificate program at the University of California at Davis in 2006. Her husband, Don, has a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University specializing in water resources. Both have been president of the Lake Chelan Wine Growers Association. They care deeply about the watershed of Lake Chelan and are proud that their estate vineyard on Ivan Morse Road is the first LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) and Salmon-Safe certified vineyard in North Central Washington. No chemical pesticides are ever used, and all of the vineyards are worked manually. “Hard Row to Hoe” celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of a man who ran a row boat taxi service on Lake Chelan in the 1930s, ferrying miners by rowboat to a brothel located at Point Lovely.

Kana Winery is the oldest winery in Yakima, WA, established in 2004. They specialize in Rhône Varietals, along with producing a wonderful Tempranillo, and Lemberger. They are located in the heart of downtown Yakima. The winemaker is Tony Lombardo, who joined the Kana Team in 2012 from Spring Valley located in Walla Walla.

The Kitzke family has been working with the land since the 1970s. Over the years the orchard trees gave way to vineyards. Kitzke Cellars focuses on small, hand-picked lots which allows the investment in time necessary to ensure quality fruit. Charlie Hoppes started making wine at Kitzke Cellars in 2008. Charlie has worked at many of Washington’s well known wineries. He served as Assistant Winemaker at Chateau St. Michelle for over ten years, followed by a stint as Head Red Winemaker in the 1990’s. Kitzke Cellars specializes in classic Bordeaux varietals. Their boutique tasting room is located on our vineyard, on Candy Mountain in Richland, WA.

The Martinez Family has been growing grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills (HHH) American Viticulture Area (AVA) in Washington State since 1981 when Sergio and Kristy planted three acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines on a distinct microclimate called Phinny Hill. Martinez Vineyard is the pride and joy of the family and is known to produce some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the world. In 2005, Sergio’s son Andrew convinced him that it was time to create their own label and in 2008 that dream came true with the release of Martinez & Martinez Winery’s first two vintages. The vineyard and winery is family owned and solely operated by Sergio (grape grower) and his wife Kristy (tasting room) and Andrew (winemaker) and his wife Monica (business manager). Their Pinot Noir reflects the terroir of the vineyard, with an elegant and defined flavor and well-balanced structure and is truly hand-crafted from vine to bottle. Their wine is gently and meticulously handled throughout the process and is aged in French Oak barrels. It has a soft, round, supple texture and elegance.

Treveri Cellars is a family-owned sparkling wine house that produces some of the finest handcrafted sparkling wines in the United States. Wind Rose Cellars is a joint project of husband and wife team, David Volmut and Jennifer States. Their main focus is making top-quality wine from Italian varieties grown in Washington State. Many of the varieties they use, such as Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Primitivo, are very difficult to find in Washington. The Dolcetto and Nebbiolo grapes are very rare, with around 10 acres total. Our winery name is after the wind rose. In olden times, the wind rose on a map was used to help sailors know the direction of the various winds. Our tasting room is located at 143 West Washington Street in Sequim, Washington.

• Shop at the many vintage and antique stores in town. Anacortes has become a destination for visitors looking for rare finds, treasures and repurposed items from days gone by. • Book a whale-watching trip. Boat tours, about six hours, leave from Anacortes. The main season runs generally from mid-April to October. You can find out about all of the local whale-watching tours at the Anacortes Visitor Center at 819 Commercial Avenue. You’ll almost always see orcas or minke and humpback whales on your trip (check the guarantees), and there’s plenty of splendid scenery and other wildlife to view as the large boats cruise calm waters around nearby islands. • Get a scenic introduction to kayaking at Deception Pass State Park. Kayak rentals through Anacortes Kayak Tours are available seasonally at Bowman Bay, and a guide can take the whole family on a short trip. Anacortes Kayak Tours also offers half-day, full-day and multi-day sea kayak tours through the San Juan Islands.
