Welcome to the Waterfront Festival

It’s time again for the annual Anacortes Waterfront Festival, a free event that celebrates local history, sailing and the Salish Sea. The community event will be held Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This festival has something for the whole family, and the savvy attendee should bring along their wallet so that they can enjoy the full range of carnival and vendor booths. With more than 80 vendors attending, ranging from educationn and food to arts and crafts, everyone can find something to shiver their timbers. Local bands will perform live music all weekend, including performances by Anacortes Music Project, Gavon Leo, Caitlin Roberts, Pacific Twang, Cardova, Mama Dirty Skirt, Shifty Sailors, A’Town Big Band, The Enthusiasts and Cascadia Groove. The Channel of Discovery will have a range of educational booths set up for children and adults, including a pirate ship and stockades thanks to Captn Seaglass, also known as Keith Kirch-

gesler. The Fidalgo Rotary Club will have a craft station to make miniature boats. “Kids can come and build. They go through different stations and put a boat together and test whether or not it floats,” said Kate Helmreich, events and communications coordinator for the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce. On Saturday, teams that are feeling crafty can attempt to build a boat as part of a Quick and Dirty boat-building team. At the end of the day, teams will test their boats’ floatability with a race. Anyone who wants to get out on the water, but doesn’t own a boat, can sign up for a free boat ride with the Anacortes Yacht Club. Interested parties can sign up at the gazebo by the Cape Sante Marina’s main office. For those who are 21 and over there is a beer garden available. The Rockfish Grill and Anacortes Brewery, will serve $7 beer and $8 wine. Water and soda will also be available. There will be an appearance by the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary branch of the Air Force, and the Washington Air National Guard.

Yacht Club provides free boat rides Anacortes Yacht Club has offered free boat rides during the Waterfront Festival since the mid-1990s, with 500 or so passengers getting a trip on the water. “This event is our largest philanthropic contribution to the community; we look forward to a fun event,” said Robert Neumann, who is in charge of the event. Neaumann said the yacht club participates because they have been an instrumental part of the boating landscape in the community since 1891, and it is a way to contribute value back to the community while having fun. Boat ride registration is at the gazebo in front of the Cap Sante Marina Harbormaster’s Office. Rides will be scheduled for Saturday (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1:30-4:30 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1:30-3:30 p.m.). A waiver must be signed during registration. Slots fill up quickly, so visitors are encouraged to stop by early. Those under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult, and Cap Sante Marina requires all children

under age 12 to wear life jackets on the docks. They will have one power boat set up to accommodate ADA riders. No pets are allowed on the boat rides. “Anyone that enjoys being on the water would have a good experience,” Neumann said.

Children can try out boat building

More than 1,600 boats will float at this year’s Waterfront Festival as the Fidalgo Island Rotary Club once again hosts its annual boat-building event aimed for children. The club provides the wooden hulls, colorful sails and miscellaneous decorations, and some families even bring their own decorative additions to personalize their small watercraft, organizers said. “For some families, this is an annual event, and they bring various crafts from home to go crazy on the boat,” said Heath Treichel, member of the Fidalgo Island Rotary Club. At previous events, the club made between 1,000 to 1,500 boats. It takes a lot of volunteer power to make it happen. Treichel said every member of the Rotary contributes to this event,

whether it is making sails ahead of time or being there on event day. “We do two-hour shifts, but many of us stay for the better part of the day,” Treichel said. “Not to mention some out-of-pocket costs that are not even counted.” The wood for the boats has been donated from Sierra Pacific. The club takes the wood to La Conner High School wood shop, where boat parts are created. “Dan Castillo is the shop teacher — so accommodating,” Treichel said. “He has a fire and energy that I know his class must love.” The entire festival was canceled for the last two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I am expecting a large turnout if the weather is nice,” Treichel said.

Some float, some swim at contest In the first year of Quick and Dirty Boat Building Competition in Anacortes, there were so many spectators that a dock sank. The idea for the competition came from three friends in the Anacortes Yacht Club – Fred Abelman, Andy Schwenk and Kent Morrow – after they attended a waterfront festival in Tacoma in 2007. They brought the idea to Anacortes, and the first event here was in 2008. Patrick Barrett, an organizer of the event, said it started as a fundraiser for Anacortes High School’s sailing club and a few years ago they began to encourage participants to raise funds for charities of their choice. The last year the event was held, five different charities benefited. Barrett said each participating team of three people has six hours to build a boat and prep it to race in the harbor. They are given a limited amount of materials to make it seaworthy. “The race itself is a highlight of the Waterfront Festival,” Barrett said. Barrett said the winning team must bring back their boat the following year. “This usually less-than-seaworthy vessel is paddled in the race by two or three community political leaders,” Barrett said. The event was canceled because of COVID-19 in both 2020 and 2021, but Barrett said everyone is excited to have the event come back. “Anyone with a sense of fun and community spirit should participate,” Barrett said. Those interested in participating can reach out to Mary Staley at marketwithmary@ gmail.com or 360-420-9274.

Festival area offers chances to learn The nonprofit educational and children’s area of the Waterfront Festival, known as the Channel of Discovery, is returning with a number of interactive exhibits for children and adults. There will be over 17 educational exhibits in the Channel of Discovery at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival. The exhibits are free for everyone for the full day of the festival, both Saturday and Sunday. Captn Seaglass, also known as Keith Kirchgesler, will return to the event with his 8-foot pirate ship, stockade and custom treasure chest. Thanks to Captn Seaglass, “Kids can feel what it was like to be a pirate,” said Kate Helmreich, events coordinator for the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce. Old Anacortes Rowing Society (OARS) is bringing a boat display to

exhibit at the festival and will bring a rowing boat called “the Island Star.” Fidalgo Rotary Club will have its miniature boat-building area for children. The club spends all year getting the boat materials ready for the festival. After buliding their boats, kids can test them in a small pool provided by the fire department. The Anacortes High School robotics team will be in attendance, as well as a number of non-profit groups. The Channel of Discovery’s main focus is education surrounding sailing and nautical themes, as well as “just telling you about things that are local to Anacortes, the Salish Sea, Puget Sound and our forest lands, because ‘Friends of the Forest’ is going to be there,” Helmreich said. “You just learn a lot about this particular area.”
