1963 was a very good year for Skagit County. That was the year United Good Neighbors started serving the County. Today, as United Way, they are celebrating 50 years of making this a better place to live and work. Congratulations from your friends at Peoples Bank.

From the Executive Director’s Desk Celebrating the Past, the Present and the Future – on this, our 50th anniversary, United Way of Skagit County is taking time to do all three. In 1963, a group of business people founded this agency with the mission to make a “Single annual appeal to help people through people.” Over $22.5 million later, our mission has evolved: “To focus the community’s investment to create sustainable, positive change in people’s lives.” Take a look through this booklet – please! Examine our donor list – the people and businesses who make sustainable change possible. Understand Collective Impact – and how it has the power to change our future in terms of Education, Income & Health. Appreciate the nonprofits who deliver services to thousands of Skagit County residents. Consider the meaning and value of Give, Advocate and Volunteer. Reflect on how you might leave a Skagit Legacy. Discover how young people are picking up the “Volunteer” baton for our future. Debra Lancaster

50 Years of United Way in Skagit County Generous community members and businesses have donated $22.5 million through United Way since 1963. In 2014 equivalent dollars, that’s over $44 million! Volunteers have contributed thousands of hours building houses; repairing, cleaning and painting nonprofit facilities; mentoring teens; and aiding the aged. Advocates have changed lives by speaking up for policies to help our community grow.
Why United Way? Donations support infants, children, families and seniors. Collectively we:

LIVE UNITED It’s a credo. A mission. A goal. A constant reminder that when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We build the strength of our neighborhoods. We bolster the health of our communities. And we change the lives of friends, family, neighbors, those with whom we work, and all of Skagit County.
How do you LIVE UNITED? You can Give. You can Advocate. You can Volunteer.
GIVE: Give a little – give a lot – give what you can. Your donation creates positive change in Skagit Valley. United Way and our partners tackle economic and physical health issues, improve educational opportunities, reduce poverty and homelessness, and ensure more access to critical services.
ADVOCATE: Speak out – be informed – engage in our community. You don’t have to call Olympia or Washington, DC to advocate. Talk with your neighbors, friends, and colleagues about challenges and solutions that can create positive changes in people’s lives.
VOLUNTEER: We all have special talents. Things we can do to help. And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. www.UnitedWaySkagit.org

Lasting Solutions We are committed to lasting solutions that build opportunity for all. Education
is a cornerstone for success in school, work and life. We look at the big picture: what resources are lacking or need strengthening, and how we can address those gaps to keep kids on track to graduation. Only by working together can we help every child unlock their full potential and empower the workforce of tomorrow.
Income:
The whole community benefits when more working individuals and families are able to stop walking a financial tightrope and get on solid ground. That’s why we focus on lasting solutions, because financially stable people are more likely to have access to quality health care, provide a good education for their children, and contribute to their local economies.
Congratulations United Way!

Varsity in Volunteerism Program makes a Positive Impact on Local High School Students! Cassidy was a shy student. She told her friends she lacked the confidence to take on a leadership position at her high school. Even so, she chose to join Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism. The program has helped her forge unexpected friendships, cultivate new-found talents, and motivate others to become active in the community. And now she’s taken on a leadership position as vice president of Youth United at Sedro-Woolley High School. Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism is providing 60 students at Sedro-Woolley and Concrete High Schools the opportunity to be recognized for their service. By completing at least 100 volunteer hours during the school year, each student will earn a Varsity Letter. Program participants have worked with the Humane Society, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Skagit County, the Sedro-Woolley Library, the Lion’s Club and other agencies. The Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism program encourages students to become stewards of their community now and into the future, making Skagit County a better place for all.
Congratulations United Way on 50 years of making a difference in Skagit County!
