As I observe my kids grow up and get close to leaving the shrouding comforts of their South Fidalgo nest, I find myself reflecting on the ways in which the outdoor environment played a role in their upbringing, and ultimately, their individuality. The interface they had with their surroundings in Skagit County has become a part of their personas and as they venture off to new places, they’re sure to be wringing with the flavors and wonder of their home digs of past. Their time spent--when not otherwise occupied with school and slumber--were frequently spent in local parks: hiking trails, wading in tide pools, plunging in lakes, sailing boats, scaling rock slabs, and otherwise immersing in the multihued mosaic of landscapes our Skagit hamlet has to offer. This year, our eighteen year boy will be walking away from high school and setting down roots at a college in

the redwood forests of Northern California--his selected course of study in oceanography, no doubt, influenced by his eighteen years of finding passage on Fidalgo Island. And as he strolls the community forest trails of Arcata, with a soft layer of duff underfoot and a tapestry of emerald canopy of draping limbs above, may the trails he blazed in the northwest voyage with him. Although it’s hard letting go of those we raised, the time finally comes when the next generation ventures out to find their own paths. As an old wanderer myself, who still gets lost along his pilgrimage, it’s important for Che and all of the other Skagit County high school graduates to keep perspective as they voyage upward and onward.
