love friendly staff, from-scratch foods at family-owned deli
GERE-A-DELI NOMINATED FOR BEST CAFÉ, SANDWICH, LUNCH AND CATERING IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
At Gere-a-Deli, the meltin-your-mouth goodness doesn’t disappoint. The old-fashioned deli offers some of the best sandwiches in the county.
Laurie Gere opened the business in 1981 in historic downtown Anacortes. Son Phil is manager and co-owner of the restaurant, and Laurie’s grandchildren work at the deli. The family has now been feeding residents and tourists of Anacortes for more than four decades.
Gere-a-Deli is always bustling with repeat customers who love their from-scratch
foods made fresh daily. The generous portions of piledhigh sandwiches, soups, quiche, salads and desserts are made from traditional family recipes. There are so many options on the menu that it’s sometimes difficult to choose just one, like the tomato basil feta quiche, seafood chowder, lemon chicken and vegetable soup, or Fidalgo Island salad tossed in a maple citrus vinaigrette. There are plenty of cold comfort-food sandwiches, such as the still-famous Nana Sue’s
meatloaf, the Gobbler or Crusty Croatian, or toasty options like the Old Chicago, East Coast or BLT Californian.
Fan favorites include the Fresh Mozza and the in-house French Dip. Diners can also
enjoy coffee and Deli Delights including carrot cake, Granny Gere’s berry cobbler or the Panda Bears, which are devil’s food cake piped in buttercream and dipped in chocolate. There are even all-day
breakfast options.
The deli is the best place to grab lunch before jumping on the ferry, getting a to-go lunch for a picnic or simply dining inside the colorfully decorated spot with nostalgic décor. The friendly, talented, hard-working staff offers great service inside the deli and at catered events. Many have worked for decades at the deli. Laurie has hired hundreds of Anacortes High School students to work at the deli, and many stay in contact with her to this day.
Gere-a-Deli is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Great foods, drinks and service at old-style Anacortes pub
The hometown spot is the go-to for locals, tourists and people waiting on the ferry. The old-style cozy pub atmosphere is the place where everyone feels welcome.
It’s the local laid-back tavern offering delicious food, a lengthy beer list, live music and plenty of charm in the decades-old pub.
Brown Lantern Tavern, located in the heart of downtown Anacortes and owned by the Rogers family, originally opened in 1933 and has changed hands many times over the years. But there’s one thing that’s remained the same: it’s a fantastic local pub with tasty foods and many drink options.
It’s obvious why the Brown Lantern Tavern remains a favorite place. The friendly, attentive servers, foods and drinks speak volumes. The long list of menu options makes it difficult to select just one thing.
In addition to award-winning burgers and fish and chips, there are oyster shooters, beer-battered prawns, Reubens, street tacos, sliders, Brendon’s hearty Southern Belle Chili, Carne Asada salad, and even the kid-favorite Little Lantern Burger, plus sides like creamy mac-andcheese wedges and onion rings. There are vegetarian
options like Greek sliders and hummus. And those who save room for dessert can try a slice of chocolate torte, apple pie or blueberry cheesecake.
Beyond the food, there’s an impressive list of local brews, ciders, wine and cocktails.
After dining inside or on the pet-friendly rear patio at The Brown Lantern, it’s obvious why they win honors almost every year in the Best of Anacortes contest.
Great well-priced food, excellent service and live
for many generations to come by working hard to provide a memorable experience for guests.
“We provide satisfying meals at reasonable prices, using only the freshest ingredients of the highest quality to us,” she said, “and we always maintain the unique surroundings that make the Brown Lantern a favorite spot for so many wonderful people.”
music are evidence
of why The Brown Lantern Tavern has been a community staple for 90 years.
Owner Cheryl Rogers said the staff is determined to preserve this local tradition
Brown Lantern Tavern is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Brunch is served on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Happy Hour is from 2-5 p.m. daily.

COSMIC VEGGIES NOMINATED FOR BEST LUNCH, SPECIALTY FOODS, VEGETARIAN, CATERING, SANDWICH AND NUTRITION IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
Heal people and the planet. Cosmic Veggies’ mission is to make delicious plant-based, gluten-free food that is accessible to everyone.
More than a decade ago, owner Elizabeth Weaver had health issues and was curious about the power of juicing and green smoothies. Her health transformed, and she suddenly felt younger and better.
That’s when she opened the thriving restaurant Drink Your Veggies in Anacortes. Although the restaurant’s name has changed to Cos-
mic Veggies, the mission hasn’t.
Typical dishes are created with comfort in mind and often contain dairy, gluten and meat that people think they will miss. Cosmic Veggies shows customers they won’t miss those things. They’re constantly creating new recipes and including customers’ ideas.
Cosmic Veggies’ menu is 100% dairy-free, plant-based, gluten-free, organic when
possible, and has no sugar added. They’re also committed to using local, sustainable and organic ingredients when possible because it’s not only
better for people’s health but also the community, and Cosmic Veggies never puts profit over people or the planet.
Weaver is clearly passion-
ate about clean, simple and delicious plant-based eating.
“You are in control of your destiny,” she said. “We do all we can to support you along the way. Join the sustainable growing global trend for healthier lifestyle choices.”
Customers can take clean eating a step further by becoming part of Cosmic Veggies with a franchise. Contact Weaver for more information.
Cosmic Veggies supports customers in living their best life by eating well to live well.
The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Local boutique offers collection of women’s clothing, accessories
ISLAND STYLES NOMINATED FOR BEST CLOTHING IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
Cute hats, coverups, jewelry, shoes and versatile pieces that can be casual or dressy.
These items are all at the cute boutique Island Styles.
Owner Marti (Brown) Troxell opened her shop in 2010 at a tiny 340-square-foot space in Anacortes while she worked at a local medical clinic. She had a back-up plan to use her paychecks to pay the lease on her shop where she sold scrubs, Dansko shoes and cancer-awareness items.
In 2013, a larger spot became available across the street from Troxell’s original location. It was behind a larger retail store which had
been open for more than 30 years. Troxell moved her business into the larger building with the goal of selling ladies’ clothing. The perfect spot opened in 2017 which is the Island Styles’ current location.
“We started out on a shoestring budget with no working capital,” she says. “I figured if it flopped, I could at least finish out my lease on my paychecks from my full-time job and then close
the doors.”
But the business kept growing. Troxell brought in women’s clothing, purses and accessories. When the 2020 pandemic hit, she donated most of her scrubs inventory to the three local hospitals. She continues to purchase scrubs for medical groups and hotels now only through special orders from customers.
Island Styles has transformed from a tiny spot to a large boutique with clothing for women of all ages, including coastal and beach-flare options, and unique items like Powder Design socks from Scotland; Dansko and Birkenstock shoes; and brands like Lysse’, Baggallini, Brighton jewelry, and Jess N Jane, one of several Made in the USA brands carried in the store.
“We keep things fresh
with new lines of clothing and plenty of accessories,” said Troxell.
The friendly and attentive staff – Gunilla, Christy, Christina and Amy -- stock the store with a variety of affordably priced styles. Although the store doesn’t have a website, staff members Gunilla and Christy keep customers informed of newly arrived items and fashion trends by hosting an entertaining bi-weekly live “Sip & Shop” event on Facebook.
Island Styles is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Jeweler continues three generations of tradition in Anacortes
Burton Jewelers has had a wonderful tradition of fine jewelry and gifts in Anacortes for over 93 years.
They specialize in custom jewelry design, drawing from their extensive collection of diamonds and colored gems. They feature expert jewelry repair and restoration with their goldsmith in-house or through a vast network of high-quality workshops. In addition, the store offers in-house jewelry appraisals for insurance purposes, estate, and fair market value. The store features fine diamonds, white and fancy natural colors, and an extensive selection of fascinating colored gemstones. They have an immense selection of engagement rings, birthstone jewelry, earrings, and pen-
dants. Additionally, they have a vast selection of fine tableware, barware, and art glass.
Inside the store is the Burton
fine art gallery, with rotating shows of local artists.
The store was founded on March 1, 1930, by Phil D.
Burton and carried forward by his son Doug Burton and daughter-in-law Laura (Salmon) Burton. Today
the legacy continues even stronger with 3rd generation Philip G. Burton and his wife, Holly (Roskelley) Burton.
Philip Burton took gemological training in the late 80s, gem cutting in Germany in 1991, and achieved his title of Registered Jeweler of the American Gem Society in 2003. Only 5% of finer independent jewelers are members of the AGS, and Philip takes continuing education and testing annually to retain the title. In addition, AGS members sign a code of ethics pledge yearly to uphold honesty and transparency in the industry for consumer protection.

SEBO’S HENERY HARDWARE NOMINATED FOR BEST HARDWARE STORE, GARDENING SUPPLIES, RENTAL SERVICE IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
The mission at Sebo’s Henery Hardware is simple: “serve others as we would like to be served.”
This mission is the foundation on which Sebo’s Henery Hardware is being built and grown.

The business, which is
located on the main drive at the beginning of historic downtown Anacortes, prides itself on great product selection, competitive prices and topnotch service. The business is also an equipment rental and garden supply store.
Sebo’s Henery Hardware is locally owned with a knowledgeable staff who offers great customer service and provides a wide range of services
including key making and chip keys, color matching for paint projects, and a large rental section.
Like the store’s former owners, Matthew and Tara strongly believe in the community in which they
serve and support local activities and organizations. They support local military families and offer them a 10% discount.

Focusing on individualized healthcare for 50 years and counting
ANACORTES CHIROPRACTIC CENTER NOMINATED FOR BEST CHIROPRACTOR IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
Dr. Derek Klier wasn’t familiar with chiropractic care until he was 15 when his mom Jean married his stepfather Robert Houston, who established and retired from Anacortes Chiropractic Center after 50 years.
Robert told Derek, “If chiropractic is something you’d want to pursue as a career in the future, then you will have a place to do it.”
After college graduation, Derek’s career focused on strength and conditioning coaching. He worked with people of various ages and
abilities, from Little Leaguers to elite-level collegiate and professional athletes to older adults.
An Arizona chiropractor
rekindled Derek’s interest in becoming a chiropractor. He applied to Iowa’s Palmer College of Chiropractic, the same school his stepfather
attended in the 1960s and where the profession began in the 1800s. Derek graduated in 2015 and joined his stepfather for five years before Robert retired in 2020.
As chiropractor and owner of Anacortes Chiropractic Center, Derek’s focus is on individualized healthcare where he offers multiple techniques and modalities to benefit patients and helps heal them by treating the cause of a symptom, not only the symptom.
“We all have our own recipe,” he said. “Each patient responds differently to different modalities and techniques that chiropractic provides. We want each patient to have successful outcomes.”
At Anacortes Chiropractic Center, superior service is their top priority.
“Providing genuine healthcare that includes empathy, intuition, knowledge and understanding to my community is everything,” Derek said. “I’m extremely fortunate to serve the community in which I was raised. Thank you to Anacortes and our many surrounding communities for giving us the opportunity to serve you since 1970.”
Anacortes Chiropractic Center is accepting new patients. The center is open Mondays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local dentists and team celebrate 10 years of caring for patients
SOUND DENTISTRY NOMINATED FOR BEST DENTIST IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
This year, Sound Dentistry is celebrating a huge milestone: 10 years of caring for their patients!
Sound Dentistry offers a remarkable experience by combining modern technology with personalized attention, reminiscent of the good old days when doctors had the time to really listen. The team is punctual, and appointments are on time.
Patients feel good about their treatment knowing the whole team worked together using the latest technology to address their needs and goals.
Sound Dentistry provides full-service dental care with the convenience of having four dentists under one roof, minimizing the need for patients to seek specialized care elsewhere. By each focusing on their area of passion, the Sound Dentistry team is equipped to offer a comprehensive range of services, ensuring patients receive high-quality care for all their dental needs. Treatments include tooth-colored restorations using the latest materials, root canal therapy, straight teeth with Invisalign or traditional braces, dental surgery and tooth replacement with dental implants.
Dr. Isabelle Nguyen’s love for dentistry began when she discovered its unique blend of science and art. She’s had extensive experience working with pediatric and adult patients. When she treats patients, her goals are to educate them on the importance of dentistry and its relation to their overall health, and to treat each patient’s smile as individually as the person
they are.
Dr. Josh Gaskill, a lifelong Washingtonian, is passionate about incorporating the latest technologies into personalized care. After his dental degree, he completed additional training in a residency program focused on advanced restorative and surgical dental treatments. He has a deep knowledge of dental material science and technologies including 3D scanning and 3D X-rays.
Dr. Kari Wilson’s earliest and fondest memories were of playing on the local beaches and in the forests. Her family called Rosario Beach their summer home for 19 years. Her first return was as a graduate student scuba diving in the local waters to study sea life, and later as a biology
instructor. She returned to Anacortes for good in 2010 to establish her career and family in the place she has always loved most. A lifelong student, she has invested more than four years in advanced orthodontic training. Her personal dental challenges sparked a deep interest and skill in dental solutions for children and adults including functional appliances, braces and Invisalign.
Dr. Nick Wilson met Kari when they were completing their master’s program research near Anacortes. The pair returned to Washington and, with their daughter, are fortunate to call Anacortes home. More than anything, he enjoys seeing and realizing a bigger, brighter future for everyone around him. All his
energy goes into his family, team and patients.
Patients at Sound Dentistry are enthusiastic about their experience. One patient remarked, “I’ve always had very attentive, respectful, friendly and what’s proved to be very expert care at Sound Dentistry. By getting regular checkups and following their advice, I’ve had a significant turn-around in my oral/ dental health in the last few years. It wasn’t fast or easy, but that was because of my previous bad habits. By their treatments, and by carefully following their recommendations, I’m now in very good shape. I highly recommend Sound Dentistry.”
Another patient stated, “Hands down my favorite dentist I have ever been to. …
They always make a point to schedule you out before you leave but remind you of your upcoming appointment. I highly recommend Dr. Nick. He’s been supportive of my dental needs and decisions. Absolutely love this team.”
The Sound Dentistry team believes their patients deserve a dentist who truly cares about them and their health, and that’s exactly what they do!

High-end lifestyle store High Society puts customers’ needs first
HIGH SOCIETY NOMINATED FOR BEST RECREATIONAL CANNABIS IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
High Society is the premier Anacortes cannabis retail store. It opened in 2015 as the first building in the country to be constructed to be a cannabis store.
High Society’s 2,000-square-foot prohibition-themed retail store features more than 20 original works of art that would fit well in any national museum.
The medically trained staff educates and serves first-time and returning customers. They also take the time to answer customers’ questions about the many products in the store and always make customers their first priority.
The staff prides themselves in sourcing the very best locally grown cannabis from Anacortes and the surrounding counties.
“We are a lifestyle brand committed to modeling the integration of cannabis in our everyday lives with love, knowledge and sup-
port of our premier herbal consultants,” said Dr. Jason Kitzman, who is also a Burlington chiropractor. High Society gives back to the community in many ways, including hosting holiday food drives, offering free voter registration, sponsoring local concerts and assisting
with medical cannabis.
The much-anticipated opening of High Society’s Burlington location opens at the end of April. This is High Society’s third location, with stores also in Anacortes and Bellingham.

Annual Anacortes Arts Festival takes place Aug. 4-6
ARTS FESTIVAL NOMINATED FOR BEST EVENT IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
Music and art connect and inspire people. That’s what the Anacortes Arts Festival has done for six decades.
The festival – one of the oldest and largest in the Northwest – takes place annually on the first full weekend in August. It’s a free event, celebrating all forms of art. It’s a true showplace for both artists and musicians.
This year’s 62nd festival is set for Aug. 4-6. The event stretches down Commercial Avenue from 10th Street all the way to the Port of Anacortes dock on the Guemes Channel waterfront. It offers something for everyone.
There are booth artisans; main, jazz and waterfront stages; beer and wine gardens; food trucks and vendors; a Kids Discovery area; spaces where artists demonstrate their craft; and the Arts at the Port Fine Art Show. The festival attracts an estimated 90,000 visitors to Anacortes. Fairgoers enjoy top-quality talent between musicians and artisans. They’re able to savor delicious foods,
from amazing ice cream and homemade cobbler to woodfired pizza and corndogs. There are plenty of demonstration workshops and opportunities to shop for art, unique gifts and crafts.
“We hope you’ll come for a day or the weekend and help us celebrate our beautiful community and the creative spirit,” said Meredith McIlmoyle, executive director of the festival.
The Anacortes Arts
Festival sponsors art-related events to raise money to support creativity in the community.
“We connect artists from all disciplines with an enthusiastic audience,” McIImoyle said. “As a nonprofit, we put our money where our heart is — funding art education opportunities for kids, art programs that enrich the community and exciting public art projects.”
The Anacortes Arts Festival is partnering with the Anacortes Chamber for a Nautical Treasure Hunt in April. The festival is taking steps to purchase the local movie theater and convert it into an art and cultural center.

Local gift shop offers something for everyone
THE JOHNSON MANOR NOMINATED FOR BEST GIFT SHOP IN BEST OF ANACORTES CONTEST
Housewares, home décor, holidays and more. From greeting cards and books to birthday candles and jewelry, there are plenty of creative gift items at the lovely seaside-inspired shop, The Johnson Manor. One of the main sections is dedicated to all things Pacific Northwest, such as ornaments, T-shirts, notecards and magnets.
Elizabeth Johnson struggled to find her path when she moved to Anacortes in 2017. At age 26 and with the support of her husband and family, she opened The Johnson Manor.
Although it’s not an easy task owning her own busi-
ness, Johnson wouldn’t have it any other way. Her goal has been to curate her store with a little bit of everything, and
she has created a cozy and inviting shop filled with unique, creative and colorful items. Locals and tourists love ex-
ploring The Johnson Manor.
“I want people to truly enjoy exploring all the things we have to offer at The John-
son Manor,” said Johnson. “If you’re ever in the store and have a suggestion, please let me know.”
Its growing website also offers customers the chance to purchase items online.
At The Johnson Manor, the staff are helpful, friendly and attentive to even the smallest details.
“We want our customers to feel at home when they shop with us and know we greatly appreciate their business,” Johnson said.
