Recreation PROGRAMS Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation invites individuals with special needs to participate in our programs. Please call in advance if accommodations are necessary for successful participation.

PRESCHOOL, YOUTH & ADULT PROGRAMS Big Hitter’s Tee-ball Instructional League It’s never too early to start thinking about springtime and Tee-ball! The goal for our tee-ball program is to help our youngsters develop handeye coordination by teaching players to hit and catch correctly. The field and the rules are modified to fit the indoor field at the Sports Center at Bakerview Park. Parents are encouraged to help at games and practices as needed. REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Friday, March 7th AGES:  Boys & Girls Ages 3 – 5 years of age PRACTICE:  Practices will be held outdoors beginning the week of March 23rd. Your coach will call you with 1st Practice day and time. GAMES:  April 5th through May 12th (6 games) Games will be indoors at the Bakerview Park Sportscenter. Games are Saturday mornings or weekday evenings. Game schedules provided at your first practice. FEE:  $45 Resident/$47 Non-resident, T-shirt, Hat & Participation Trophy included! The goals of this program are to learn the basics of baseball and develop hand/ eye coordination through catching and hitting the ball. Players will learn to pass, set, hit, block, serve and dig the RIGHT way! Players from beginners to those with more experience will have the chance to learn volleyball fundamentals with fun, competitive drills designed to introduce volleyball skills and emphasize team work. Participants will play other teams from Burlington, Sedro-Woolley, and LaConner. Sign up as an individual to be placed on a Mount Vernon team! Skagit Spikers Girls Volleyball League TEAMS FORMING – Teams are currently forming in the Mount Vernon, Burlington, LaConner, Conway & Sedro-Woolley. Join this volleyball league to learn the fundamentals of the game, team play, sportsmanship and meet new friends. Players of

all abilities are encouraged to sign up! This is great preparation for junior high and high school volleyball teams. Participants will play teams from Mount Vernon, Burlington, Sedro-Woolley, LaConner and Conway. Registration Deadline:  Friday, February 21st Team Coaches:  Call MVPR for League Packet with roster and individual registration forms. Individuals who register without a coach will be placed on an existing team or a new team will be formed if a coach is found and coordinated through MVPR. Child and Babysitting Safety Class The Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program is a community education program that covers child safety and basic care techniques for infants and children. CABS stresses the priority to keep the babysitter and the children you care for safe. Some of the topics covered in the program: before the parents leave, playtime, telephone calls/stranger knocks, hand washing, meal times, bedtime, and providing emergency care (first aid and CPR). Registration fees include supervision, transportation and admission fees but do not include food, beverages or other purchases unless specifically noted. Participants should bring money for food and other purchases and wear weather appropriate and comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Some offerings include detailed itineraries and/or supplies lists which will be available upon registration.

Let It Snow…..Snowshoeing and Bavarian Ice Festival in Leavenworth Join RWB as we head east for a great day of snow, fun and celebration. We’ll load up all the gear and head over Highway 2 towards Leavenworth. Along the way we’ll enjoy an easy to moderate snowshoe hike perfect for all abilities. Depending on the recent snowfall we will visit either the Stevens Pass Nordic Center or the greater Wenatchee State Park area. We’ll snowshoe for approximately 3 hours and enjoy a picnic lunch along the trail. Next we’ll continue on down the road to Leavenworth and the annual Bavarian Ice Festival. Once here we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy a warm meal, perhaps a cold beverage, maybe do a little shopping and definitely do some people watching! And then at 6:00 pm let the fireworks begin! Washington is the now the second largest wine producing state in the nation and continues to garner international acclaim for it’s wonderful vintages. Today’s adventure includes a private wine tasting and educational talk with an award-winning winemaker, exploring several Woodinville winery tasting rooms and learning how to choose the right gourmet chocolate to pair with different wines. Baker Ski Area and explore the peace and tranquility by the light (hopefully!) of a full moon. Then on the way home we’ll stop by Milano’s for a delicious no-host dinner. This protected estuary, home to over 300 species of birds, mammals, fish and amphibians, has become an increasingly important place for wildlife and especially migratory birds on the West Coast. Sue will lead you on various walks, set up a spotting scope and help you identify numerous varieties of birds and waterfowl. Participants will have time to enjoy a picnic lunch along the wonderful trails, check out the viewing platforms and climb the observation tower. Time will also be given to explore the amazing visitor center and lovely gift shop. And, on the way home you’ll make one last stop for a quick afternoon treat or coffee break. New Day Northwest, Colorful Ballard and Wight’s Home and Garden Get ready for a fun and exciting adventure today…no fooling! First stop: KING-5 TV and the live taping of “New Day Northwest”. Hosted by Margaret Larson, it is a wonderful local magazinestyle television show that focuses on “newsmakers, lifestyle, food, fitness and wellness, books, music and much more.” Next up: colorful Ballard. This refresher course will help re-teach the dog and the owner to work together as a team. As we move into winter, one perennial expectation we can all expect is a dive in temperature and an upwelling of precipitation. The mosaic of dropped foliage intermingling through fall and into the early winter in a windblown gamboling of mother pageantry, until the organic mélange of flotsam and jetsam are finally captured by a gravitational magnet, fading benignly as a sullen tint, a tumbleweed of crumpled duff, melting like the infamous wicked witch into the earth’s ever expanding organic epidermis. The braided chameleon carpet changing shades in a sea of change, as the northwest drifts into dormancy, a season of dimmer colors and stiffer days. As photosynthesis assembly lines shut down, the somber season of winter quiescent becomes a time for recharge, a time to nestle by the warmth of home, coil with family-- a time of recuperation-- in anticipation of the warming temperatures and longer days that will inevitably soon return. Seasonal change is part of our northwest identity, four distinct cyclical flavors beginning and ending at whims of their own choosing, befuddling weather casters and proving meteorological experts/equipment as the imperfect projectors/pretenders they are (sorry Steve Pool). Seasonal change fluxes with the whims and winds of a greater influence, making landfall like an unexpected

January 2014 25-26 Charlie Hampton Memorial 3D Archery Shoot Silver Arrow Bowmen 8am-2pm staggered start Sat & 8am Target assignments on Sunday 20409 East Hickox Rd, Mount Vernon

3D shoots are on our outdoor walkthrough course shooting at life sized foam animal targets. We have every kind of target: full sized deer, elk, bear, bison, moose and smaller targets. Yardages are from 5 to 60 yards. We typically have a minimum of 30 targets each day. The range opens at daylight on Saturday and closes about 2 so that we can reset the course for the next day. We have a shotgun start @ 9am on Sunday with target assignments at 8am. Door prizes and awards are after the shoot on Sunday at around 1pm. This shoot is in memory of Charlie who dedicated his time to the youth program, spent countless hours working at the club, and making everyone laugh in the process. No Broadheads Allowed.
