tions arrive unexpectedly and cloak themselves in inconspicuous attire. As we pass through the threshold to a New Year I find myself pondering the coming months with anticipatory restlessness—waiting and wondering about the unimaginable surprises that lie ahead. A week before the 2014 Skagit Fair a large thick painted canvas tarp was dumped at our doorstep. To a Skagit farming family, the mural it was less of a piece of art than it was another useful tool for the farm. Over a course of several decades it was utilized for covering firewood, keeping the rain of the tents during hunting trips, and as a throw rug in the farmhouse basement. When not in use, the mural was placed in a large crate where it spent most of the past 75 years being passed from family barn to family barn, a waning tool for a new era where plastic tarps proved themselves to be much lighter and perhaps just as durable. Tony Breckinridge grew tired of the large cumbersome mural taking up space in his basement and after a failing effort to cram it back the in its crate by stomping up and down on it, he pulled it from the box and headed off towards the garbage dumpster on the far end of the pasture, dragging the 50lb mural “Linus style” 40 feet short of a depot of abyss before his neck cried “UNCLE”. And there the mural rested for the next two months, in lonely wet pasture where it perhaps received occa-

sional visits by a wayfaring curious cow. The mural’s only saving grace attributed to the furrowed neck of an aging rodeo clown-a near wretched ending to a federally subsidized painting that once stood on grand display in the corridor of a wing of the old Burlington High School. After the mural was raised proudly at the County Fair, it was soon to be discovered to have been painted in 1941 by William Cumming, a young and aspiring artist who hung out with “the mystic four”, a group of bohemian northwest artists who set down roots on South Fidalgo Island, LaConner, and other Skagit County perimeter rest stops. Their work and style became recognized as the Northwest School of Art and their work has become central to our artistic identity. As a parks director, more accustomed to saving lands than saving art, I was catapulted into a new and unaccustomed role. After working three months with the Breckinridge Family, The County Commissioners, The Museum of Northwest Art, and The Burlington School District, and Anacortes Historical Museum; we have finally negotiated a new and permanent home for the million dollar art piece. After getting a $100k makeover, the art will be once again be showcased proudly for the public’s pleasure. As for me, I’m simply left to wonder what new fun waits in the coming year...
