From the Director’s Chair Brian Adams
There is no horsing around when it comes to our hard working staff throwing an action packed Fair! Come August 6th at 10am sharp we will swing open the gates and let the first of the fervent 2014 fairgoers gallop in. Although it will be a fresh event with new encounters for the attendees, it will only build on a long history of entertainment at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. The first Fair was established in 1898 when N.J. Moldstad pulled a couple of fellow Mount Vernon businessmen aside and decided to form the first Fair association. The first Fair was a four day event in October, at a time when the entire size of Skagit County was less than 14,000 people. The Fair was on rocky grounds on many occasions since, especially during the depression and WWII, when several Fairs were cancelled. Uncertain times placed our current era of Fairs to the brink as well, but with the determination
of staff, the leadership of County Commissioners and strong community support, we have forged forward to put this historical event on firm footing. I am sure Mr. Moldstad would be pleased to know his legacy lives on and the Fair is still a Skagit County centerpiece. A special thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors that move this magical Fair machine forward--we couldn’t do it without you. In addition to homegrown talent of Knut Bell headlining a nonstop parade of entertainers on the SICBA Main Stage, the entertainment broadcast throughout the ground’s acreage of barns is worth much more than the paltry price of admission. The barns will be busting at the seams with pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, horses, cows, dogs and cats, all competing for their shot at the domesticated animal kingdom’s version of the Super Bowl—in their crusade to equaling the success of the Seattle Seahawks-by rising above the other competitors and bringing home

“top-dog honors”. On Thursday we bring the youth of Skagit County to compete in a variety of ways. Wear your hometown colors and cheer on the competing youth from the friendly confines of your own towns! If we still haven’t struck a chord with all of the fun animals and non-stop entertainment, maybe you’re a connoisseur for the legendary tastes of the Fair--rib sticking BBQ, mounds of curly fries, or even deep fried sponge cake! Eat heartily before taking a spin on the cup-and-saucer or one of the other many carnival rides. Or take your aim pitching softballs into wicker wash tubs, at your chance on taking home an oversized stuffed gorilla. With all the sights, sounds, and succulent smells tickling at your senses as you meander your way through the grounds we’re positive you’ll find yourself believing what scores of others have been telling us for more than 100 years: There’s Magic in the Fair!

4-H & FFA at the Fair The Skagit County Fair has a long history of partnering with local 4-H and FFA club members who come to share and showcase their skills and talents. Many kids participate in both programs; the FFA in school and the 4-H after school. The clubs have a common theme of hands on learning, community spirit, sciences, arts, and agriculture. You won’t want to miss the Skagit Junior Livestock Show in the pavilion on Friday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m. FFA students and 4-H club members in grades three to twelve from Skagit and Snohomish counties who have taken on a project to raise a market animal, come to show it for sale by auction. The livestock includes steers, lambs, hogs, meat goats, and meat rabbits; blue ribbon animals fetch more money. These projects are local, well cared for and managed by the students. Students are taught to treat and care for their animals with a high ethical standard of care. Another great highlight is the Burlington students who show Wesen Farm dairy calves. The Wesen Family Farm sets aside an area for about a dozen students to choose and care for their own calf as they train them to lead for the show. Clubs raise money in the community to support these student projects. Students are judged on Showmanship also known as Fitting and Showing, which is a 4-H requirement for any animal project. The exhibitor is judged on how well he or she exhibits the animal to its best advantage, with additional scoring for the grooming and presentation of both animal and handler. A Round Robin is a crowd favorite where a showman from each division shows large and small animals from other divisions. Speed Events in the horse arena include Poles, Key, International Flags, Figure 8, and Barrels. Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s position and ability to ride correctly with effective communication aids.

earning to live, living to serve.” The organization was founded in 1928 by 33 farm boys for the purpose of bringing together students, teachers, and agribusiness interests through agricultural education and hands on projects. FFA now has almost 500,000 members in 7,000 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization teaches classes in more than 300 careers in the food, fiber, and natural resources industry including animal science, horticulture, floral design, AG mechanics, and meal art. Apart from personal growth, these programs provide students the opportunity to travel, discover careers in agriculture and develop their premier leadership skills. FFA Global programs give students and teachers the opportunity to explore the different agricultural practices and cultures in countries around the world. Students can join FFA through a school club while they are enrolled in an agricultural class.

Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences, travel the world, become involved in their community through service, and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting. In Skagit County 450 youth organized in 35 Clubs are mentored by 140 volunteers. Children join 4-H by joining a 4-H club, attending a 4-H camp, or participating in school based or after school 4-H programs. 4-H members can compete with their projects in contests at the local, state, regional or national levels and also attend conferences and events.

Knut Bell & the Blue Collars & Introducing: Knut Bell & the 360s
Knut Bell and is his band the Blue Collars are returning to the fair where they have been entertaining the crowds for the better part of a decade. This year Knut is also bringing his new band the 360s. They will each perform on the main stage: the Blue Collars on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. and the 360s on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The 360’s are: Dean Patrick Luce on lead electric guitar; John Rentschler on fiddle; Peter Bridgman on doghouse/upright Bass; and Tom Forster on drums. The group was formed with Skagit/ Whatcom musicians who are all members/leaders of their own bands outside the 360’s including ‘Smokewagon’, ‘The Dovetails’, and ‘Dean’s Honky-Tonk Dream’. They started with a weekly, early, all ages show in Bellingham. The 360’s are a string band with traditional/roots performances. The Blue Collars are: Grady Shawver on lead electric guitar; Jim Matthews on electric bass; and depending on availability either Tom Forster OR Adrian VanBatenBurg on Drums. The Blue Collars were created in
2000 and perform mostly original country rock music with a few covers thrown in for good measure. The band has changed players throughout the years but has always included top-notch musicians. Knut Bell and The Blue Collars have performed mostly in the Pacific Northwest but have made ‘destination specific’ tours/ trips to states around the U.S. The group has performed at many of the better known music venues throughout the Pacific Northwest plus their share of weddings, corporate events, and fundraisers. Knut Bell and The Blue Collars were recently voted #3 in King 5’s Best of the Northwest contest out of 820 plus bands and just recently two original songs recorded by Knut Bell and The Blue Collars were used in the film ‘Desert Cathedral’. Br’er Rabbit
Br’er Rabbit of Bellingham will perform live on the main stage at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 9th; this is the band’s second performance at the Skagit County Fair. They aim to combine each member’s unique strengths in writing their original music while appealing to audiences of all
generations and genres. The group describes their music as original yet familiar “folk-stomp Americana”, drawing inspiration from old legends and new groups such as Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers. The band was formed about two years ago and released their first album in November 2012. They are coming off of a very busy touring schedule including performances in a huge range of venues, a tour in the Midwest in spring 2013, a west coast road trip down to Los Angeles in Fall 2013, and New York in spring 2014. The band consists of Zach Hamer on lead guitar, harmonica, vocals; Nathan Hamer on ukulele, mandolin, vocals, melodic; Miranda Zickler on guitar, tambourine, cello, piano, vocals; and Stephen “Twiddy” Straub on bass, kick drum, beatbox. Voted best band in their home city of Bellingham in 2013, the band’s debut full-length album “The Wild North” is available now on iTunes, Spotify, and in their online store. Don’t miss these and all the other great musical acts this year! See your program schedule for the complete line-up.

Cheer at the Fair Don’t miss the third annual “Cheer at the Fair”, sponsored by Mobile Music. This hugely popular event will feature routines from several local high schools and the Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon Youth cheer teams! Come out and support the Darrington Loggers, Concrete Lions, Sedro-Woolley Cubs, La Conner Braves, BurlingtonEdison Tigers, and the Mount Vernon Bulldogs. The show will be on the main stage at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7th. And just for fun after the performances, each team nominates a cheerleader to participate in the pie eating contest. Skagit County Parks and Recreation board member, Kevin Loy, originally came up with the idea of “Cheer at the Fair” to showcase the cheerleaders’ amazing athletic abilities, while helping them build confidence and have a great time. “This is a chance for the girls to be center stage instead of cheering on sports teams” he said. Each squad will perform a two to three minute prepared dance and cheer routine, left up to each coach’s discretion. Says Kevin, “you won’t be disappointed…the small school teams
are just as good as the big schools.” Says Mount Vernon High School coach Khalie Whitman “The girls love participating in the fair because it is a chance to show their skills to a different crowd of people and it is an all around fun day hanging out with cheerleaders from other schools.” Mobile Music’s owner John Manso is proud to sponsor the cheer exhibition. He loves to be involved in community events and says “We’ve always sponsored the cheerleaders. Many of our employees have had kids in high school through the years.” The fair exhibition’s sister event is the inter-school Skagit cheer competition. The first competition was held in March 2013 at Burlington-Edison High School, the 2014 event was held in Sedro-Woolley, and the 2015 event will be held in Mount Vernon. In order to prepare for the fair, coaches put together a routine that is then showcased at both cheerleadership camp and the fair. The girls start practice in the spring right after tryouts and continue practicing throughout the summer. Apart from practicing and performing routines, the squads are active
members of their communities; volunteering, participating in and raising money for a variety of events and causes. Community service is central to the fabric of these cheer teams and is their largest focus beyond practice and cheering at games. The Darrington cheer squad participates in the “Light the Night Walk” for Leukemia and Lymphoma and the ALS Walk in Seattle. The team has also raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Among other things, the Darrington team also volunteers in the local elementary school, making up cheers to celebrate “Dr. Seuss Night”, providing activities for kids during parent meetings and offering face painting. The Concrete Lions squad volunteers at the Concrete Activity day in Silo Park and participates in the Cascade Days parade. The Mount Vernon squad spends a majority of their time doing community service at various events/ organizations throughout the Skagit Valley. Don’t miss this opportunity to support these local cheerleaders, performers, and bands. We will see you there!

Magicians put the “Magic in the Fair” The Magic of Sterling
This year’s theme is “There’s Magic in the Fair” and the fair is thrilled to welcome accomplished local magician Sterling Dietz to perform his one man show “The Magic of Sterling”. The shows will be on the main stage on Friday, August 8th at 11:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Magic shows on Saturday will also be on the main stage at 2:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sterling performs half of the year in Cabo San Lucas and will use his Spanish language skills to perform a magic show on Latino Night on the main stage, Friday at 6:30 p.m. It was only eight years ago, as a teenager, that Sterling saw a magician perform at his local theater. He was inspired to become a magician and one year later he stepped onto the international magic scene and was awarded the title “World Teen Champion of Magic.” Sterling was born and raised in Whatcom County but he tours the world performing his magic show filled with drama, comedy, and illusion suitable for the entire family.
Sterling is committed to the people of his home community and says that “if my magic can bring joy, and be a benefit to others, then I am truly blessed.” Beginning in 2007, Sterling founded four separate scholarships for graduating seniors of Lynden High School, and Lynden Christian High School. These scholarships are awarded to those students that exhibit a passion for continuing their education in the area of Theatre and the Arts. It is Sterling’s hope that these scholarships will provide a spark to fuel their passions and dreams, in the field of the Arts.
The Magic of Elliott
Elliott Hofferth of Anacortes, has a unique magic show called “The Magic of Elliott” involving comedy, dance, pantomime, theatre, and illusion. He will perform at 12:00 p.m. on the field stage and 2:15 p.m. on the main stage (as part of the youth showdown) on Thursday, August 7th. Elliott is an up and coming magician who recently returned from Las Vegas Nevada, where he trained under master magicians Jeff McBride and Eugene

I don’t know where I would be today if I hadn’t worked with him.” Elliott’s favorite type of magic is sleight of hand manipulation using rings, cards, and billiard balls. At the fair he will be performing his award winning acts using rings and cards as well as comedy and audience participation. This will be Elliott’s second year performing at the fair.
