The HISTORY of Berry Dairy Days
L
ike communities all around the world for thousands of years, Burlington has an annual festival to celebrate its bounty, skills, traditions, and shared values. Although it started with another name, Berry Dairy Days has been a consistent annual part of the community calendar for decades; 2014 marks the 77th annual event! In 1937 a group of local volunteer firefighters in need of new equipment organized the first annual “Strawberry Festival” as a fundraiser, thus called to reflect how strawberry farming dominated Skagit County, and for an excuse to make a giant strawberry shortcake sure to draw a crowd. Duane Stowe, long-time local resident and owner of Burlington’s Stowe’s
4
Shoes & Clothing recalls how in the “old days” there was a local strawberry processing plant, now long gone. The event has gone on every year rain or shine right through WWII. As it grew in size and scope, the festival was handed over to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce in 1965 and shortly thereafter re-named “Berry Dairy Days” to reflect the slow decrease in local strawberry farming and the growing influence of dairy business in the area. Ashley Stowe is granddaughter to Duane Stowe. She grew up looking forward to Berry Dairy Days every year, hearing stories from her grandfather about the significance of the celebration of a small-town farming community,
Berry Dairy Days • June 19-22, 2014
and seeing her grandparents participate as Grand Marshalls for the parade. Ashley works at Stowe’s Shoes over the Berry Dairy weekend for their sidewalk sale on Fairhaven Avenue, but enjoys the Grand Parade and Berry Cool Car Show that run right in front of the store. For at least the last 15 years, Sakuma Brothers Farms has donated strawberries and Haggen has donated the shortcakes for the strawberry shortcakes sold at the festival. The Burlington-Edison High School Cheerleading Squad sells the shortcakes to raise money for the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and their cheer clinics and custom made uniforms. The cheerleaders sell the shortcakes for $3 each and they receive 20 percent of
goskagit.com
the proceeds. Strawberry shortcakes will be sold at corresponding events throughout the festival Thursday through Sunday. New this year, there will be a shortcake booth at the Byway Center. See the calendar of events for exact times and locations. Sakuma Brothers Farms, located just north of Burlington, has a rich berry growing history in the community dating back to 1915. Current president, Ryan Sakuma, is a fourth generation family member and has taken the company to new heights as an industry leader in research and development and large scale fruit processing and sales. There was great success in moving the Festival in the Park to Railroad Park last year and it will remain there going forward. As the community grows and evolves, no doubt there will be other changes as well. This festival has a storied history and it will be interesting to see how future generations take over the reins and make it their own.

Fred Stump Memorial
SALMON BARBEQUE T
he Burlington-Edison Kiwanis club was founded in 1948 by Fred Stump, a local veteran. The club’s first president was Clarence Judy. The Kiwanis mission is to serve the children of the world one child, one family, and one community at a time and the local chapter has always risen to the occasion in Skagit County. The Salmon Barbeque was started by club members in 1949 to raise money for the construction of a local community center; this will be the 65th annual event! The fundraiser was renamed the Fred Stump Memorial Barbeque after he passed away. The Kiwanis Club built the Maiben Park barbeque pit in the mid 1960s and per tradition, the barbeque will be held there all day Saturday, June 21st from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. even though the festival has moved to Railroad Park. The club will also be hosting the 11th Annual Friday Night Barbeque at the Skagit River Park soccer fields from 5 p.m. to dusk to coincide with
the live entertainment and fireworks show. The Kiwanis Club built the barbeque pit at the Skagit River Park soccer fields in 2010. About 1,300 to 1,500 pounds of salmon are served every year in the two-day event. To-go meals are made for business owners who want to feed their employees and support the cause; orders are delivered to businesses on Saturday. Last year more than 150 meals were ordered! To purchase to-go meals please call Les Tokarchuk at 360-391-3721; orders will be taken up until noon on Friday, June 20th. The meal includes char-broiled salmon with secret sauce, baked potato with sour cream and butter on the side, coleslaw, dinner roll, beverage and an orange/white Dixie cup ice cream. The cost of the meal is $12 for adults and $6 for kids under 12.

The barbeque is the Kiwanis Club’s biggest annual fundraiser. The money raised goes to support Kiwanis Club’s charitable contributions including $11,000 worth of scholarships to the Burlington-Edison High School, funding the Key Club (high school chapter of Kiwanis), and various local senior and childrens’ charities.

Berry Dairy Days RUNS
O
riginally founded by local resident and business owner Duane Stowe, the Berry Dairy Days Runs have been going strong since the late 1970s. Duane’s original vision was to support the Burlington-Edison track team as his kids were high school track runners at that time. Today, race fees go to support local track and cross country teams who assist in course marshalling and management of the race. The participating schools have brought a lot of pride to the community, historically winning eight back to back state team cross country titles in the past decade. As Duane’s kids grew up and he became more involved in other festival events, the Burlington Parks and Recreation department took over the race in 1997. The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department ran the race through 2010 but decided to place their focus on the large Friday evening soccer tournament and fireworks presentation, handing over the reins to local, wellrespected running enthusiasts Chris Whan and Kevin Ryan in 2011. On Saturday, June 21st, race checkin and same-day registration begin at 6:30 a.m., early start is at 7:30 a.m., and races officially launch at 8:30 a.m. Registration and the start line both take place on the corner of Oak Street and Fairhaven Avenue in Railroad Park/ Regional Byway Center. Results and awards will be announced following the completion of each race. The Berry Dairy Days Runs draw approximately 500 participants from all around the region including local running enthusiasts and experienced marathoners. The races have been certified since 2008, which has created a bigger draw among serious runners. Over the years, the running routes have changed multiple times. The original runs were four and seven
goskagit.com
miles long along Pulver Road. Next, the runs changed to out and back on Anacortes Street. Today the runs consist of a USATF certified 10K and 5K fun run that go out and back along Fairhaven Avenue to Gardner Street. These routes have been consistent for more than a decade. The popular USATF certified half marathon was added three years ago and runs flat along the scenic Skagit River Dike. All half marathon finishers receive medals. Race organizers are thankful for great cooperation from the Dike District in the half marathon event effort. Official race times are recorded and posted on www.berrydairyruns. com. Visit www.berrydairyruns.com/ photos_from_course to see pictures of the half marathon course.
The 2014 Official Sponsor is Sakuma Brothers who has sponsored the race for the past 11 years, providing end of race berries and support. For more information including course maps or to print a registration form, please visit www.berrydairyruns.com.

Long time organizer, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, and sponsor Fred Meyer, will be continuing their roles. Burlington-Edison High School clubs traditionally participate heavily in the parade and will provide many types of performers amongst this year’s floats. In good weather, thousands of spectators come out to see the 7080 floats and performances including marching bands, drill and dance teams, 4-H clubs, local gymnasts, dancers, musicians, and representatives from many local businesses, organizations, and civic groups. Long-time parade participant Loren Dahl of the Cascade Two Cylinder Club loves how the parade brings

together old farming friends and celebrates the community. The club will run 15 to 18 styled and un-styled John Deere tractors in the parade; Loren will be driving a vintage 1945 BR John Deere tractor. The Two Cylinder Club has 194 members with a mission to preserve John Deere agricultural machinery in the Pacific Northwest. The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to have Garnor Bensen as the parade’s 2014 Grand Marshal. Garnor is a retired Burlington City Councilman; he and his wife Sandra have lived and raised their family in Burlington since 1965. Garnor now volunteers for the Burlington Police Department’s Citizen on Patrol

Demolition Derby at the Skagit Speedway
C
“WHERE FAMILIES COME TO HAVE FUN!”
ome out to Skagit Speedway on Saturday, June 21st, at 5:30 p.m. for some great family fun! Enjoy about 12 races including Sprint and Outlaw Tuner cars and a renewed tradition: the pickup truck demolition derby. Outlaw Tuner cars are a four cylinder import car popular among the younger crowd. Tuners are essentially the modern version of street racers that can do “drifting” competitions. Sprint cars are high-powered race cars designed primarily for racing on short oval or circular dirt or paved tracks and can go up to speeds of 140 miles per hour. Skagit Speedway is one of the top tracks in the country. Opening in 1954, there have been countless exciting races and records set. The track is 3/10 mile in a high banked clay oval. There is a family friendly nonsmoking section, ice cold beer garden, excellent food and souvenir booths, clean restrooms located at each end of the grandstand, and FREE parking in a lit 20 acre lot. The Burlington-Edison High School cheerleading squad will be selling strawberry shortcakes from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Demolition derbies in muddy dirt tracks have a long U.S. history; they were officially started by independent promoters at county fairs and festivals in the 1950s. Traditionally, older American made sedans and station wagons were used to deliberately ram into each other until only one was left running. Over the decades the vehicles have changed but the techniques have remained the same.
goskagit.com
Many drivers still ram with the rear of the car to protect their engine as they try to outlast their competitors in a 10-30 minute derby heat. For safety and aesthetic reasons, many modifications are made to the cars including removing all glass, interior fixtures, lights, and plastic. Roll bars and fire extinguishers are often installed. Drivers must follow house rules for car alterations as well as safety regulations. For example, a driver could face disqualification for deliberately rolling over or ramming into rival driver doors. Driver side doors are usually painted white or blaze orange with a large number for easy identification and the rest of the car is spray-painted cheaply in loud colors. The sport’s popularity grew rapidly in the 1960s and peaked in the 1970s but derbies have grown again in status in the last decade. Pickup trucks and SUVs were not originally used in derbies but have become a well-liked alternative to cars.

from all over the region including British Columbia and all across Western Washington State. The Berry Cool Car Show was actually born out of two car events, started separately by local friends Garnor Bensen, former president of the Skagit Old Car Club and Les Tokarchuk, then president of the North Cascades Street Rod Association (NCSRA). Les started the “Hamburgers and Hot Rods” show at the local Burger King about 16 years ago and Garnor started the car show in the old Canton restaurant parking lot about 20 years ago. In 2001, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce asked the two to merge shows and the Berry Cool Car Show was created for the Sunday of Berry Dairy Days. The show celebrates the history of the automobile, draws car
goskagit.com
lovers from all over the region, and creates a special community event within the festival. The event is free to peruse but is organized and financially supported by the NCSRA. Raffle tickets purchased at the show along with prizes donated by local sponsors also contribute to the show’s success. The money raised and donated goes toward entry fees and a contribution to scholarship funds for the Skagit Community College’s Auto Technology Program that support the next generation of car enthusiasts and mechanics. Local Merchants on Fairhaven Avenue sponsor the show, staying open during the event and donating funding for the trophies. Since the show’s start and returning for another year as the number one sponsor is Pat Rimmer’s Les Schwab Tire Center, located on Burlington Boulevard. Other returning sponsors are the Trainwreck Bar & Grill, the Blueberry Café (formerly the Fairhaven Café), Café Burlington, and Stowe’s Shoes & Clothing; the latter three being original sponsors. First, second, and third place trophies are awarded to each class, voted on by all show participants. Show classes include: Best 1929 and older, Best 1930s, Best 1940s, Best 1950s, Best 1960s, Best 1970s and newer, Best Truck, Best Custom and Best Oddball. Special trophies are awarded by local judges handpicked the day of the show for their love of and knowledge of cars. Special categories include: Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Engine, Best Street Rod, Best Corvette, and Best in Show. Americans have long celebrated their love and history of the automobile by attending car shows throughout the country. Whether you’re a true car enthusiast, have an interest in America’s car history, or you’re coming along for Dad, you won’t be disappointed.
