Tulip Growing Cycle by Kimberly Cauvel

Hundreds of acres of fields in the Skagit Valley bloom with tulips each year, calling for a celebration among locals and visitors.

Daffodils and irises, as well as rotation crops like grains and potatoes, are grown each year in between to restore soil structure and nutrients while also protecting the flowers from diseases, which die out naturally over the crop rotation period.

S

Although Washington Bulb Co. grows other products, the tulips draw the attention.

ix generations of the Roozen family have grown the flowers in the valley, and their relatives grew them in Holland as early as the mid1700s. Skagit’s mild climate, nearby water and healthy soil are similar to Holland’s, making it an ideal location for growing the flowers, RoozenGaarde and Washington Bulb Co. tulip grower Brent Roozen said. In the spring, nearly 1,000 acres of fields in Skagit bloom with tulips, daffodils and irises planted by the Roozens’ Washington Bulb Co. About 1 million flower bulbs are selected and laid out in the fields each fall, then left until the weather warms enough to bring them to bloom between late March and May. The process requires careful planning because tulips can only be planted in the same fields every six years, Roozen said.

“We’re more known for our tulips, and for good reason. Our fields are a lot more dramatic, there are more colors,” Roozen said. Because the tulips are the attraction, but their location in the fields changes each year, the Roozens provide a bloom map on tulips.com. Daffodils tend to bloom in March, tulips anywhere from early March to April, and irises in late May, but the exact bloom dates depend on the weather. If it’s warmer, the flowers will bloom earlier. “When the tulips bloom, we always say, ‘That’s according to Mother Nature,’ ” Roozen said. Yet the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival always runs April 1-30, so Roozen recommends tulip watchers aim for the middle of the month. goskagit.com

While the fields bloom once a year at Mother Nature’s whim, the Roozens can grow the flowering bulbs yearround in the company’s 15 acres of greenhouses. “You can’t control the climate variables outside, whereas in the greenhouse we can control when they’re ready to be picked,” Roozen said. It takes about a month for a fullgrown flower to bloom from the time the bulb is planted in the greenhouse, allowing the farm to supply colorthemed, fresh-cut tulips for holidays that often fall outside normal tulip blooming time, including Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas, Roozen said.

2014 Tulip Festival Poster By Rachel Lerman

Luke Tornatzky had planned on painting a somber, dramatic scene for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival poster, perhaps depicting a person, with a couple of flowers on the floor. But the more the Port Townsend artist thought about it, the more he realized that wasn’t exactly right for the occasion.

nd then he visited the tulip fields and saw the flowers reflected in the ditches of water and it just clicked. The artist is known for his paintings of rowboats and his art often has water themes. The poster he created for the 2014 Tulip Festival shows splashes of yellow, pink, red and purple rows of clustered tulips, their reflections cast in a still trough of water. In the distance, a farmer putters past the sea of flowers against a backdrop of misty blue mountains and a red barn.

“I like it because it’s a great way to put interesting color that you wouldn’t ordinarily think would be in water,” Tornatzky said of painting water reflections. “And you can make great, sort of abstract shapes out of those colors. So they’re infinitely variable and interesting to me.” Tornatzky grew up near Cleveland, but knew he wanted to check out other places. It terrified him that he might find a place he liked much better when he was too old to enjoy it.

“You should choose where you live,” he said. So he traveled. He was drawn to mountains originally, but after living near them, found they didn’t do it for him. Then he reached Puget Sound. “Being by the water is the best part of being here, too,” he said, remembering his favorite part of growing up in Ohio was having Lake Erie in his back yard.

“It just fits my person perfectly to be a painter. I’d have a hard time doing anything else,” he said.

Before being chosen to create the festival’s poster, Tornatsky had painted flowers only once before, for the Sequim Lavender Festival poster. But he wasn’t concerned. It’s all sort of the same, he said. A boat, a tree, a flower — it’s something outside that has sun shining on it creating shadows. Creating posters is a good challenge, he said. He will also create the poster for the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in September. Tornatzky will rent part of the gallery space in Tulip Town to show a few pieces of his work during the festival. goskagit.com

Tulip Festival traffic drives county’s mitigation efforts By Russell Hixson

Each year thousands of people flood into the county to experience the technicolor spectacle that is the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

B

ut with acres and acres of tulips come waves and waves of traffic. The vehicles coming in and out of the area quickly overwhelm county roads and city streets, which has prompted officials to make improvements over the years. “With so many people, solving it isn’t the answer,” said county engineer

eastbound traffic chokes trying to reach Interstate 5. Though Kutz said construction on this project began in 2013, its completion will have to wait until this year’s tulip festival is over.

A study from Washington State University years ago estimated the Tulip Festival crowds reached nearly 250,000 with most coming on weekends, particularly any weekend that offered the nicest weather. “Everybody wants to be there at the same time,” Kutz said.

PROFESSIONAL

But it’s not all about the festival. Kutz said that the road improvements being made are not simply spurred on by the festival, they are general enhancements that improve the county’s roads for everyone.

The intersection of McLean Road and Best Road used to get so clogged up it would turn into a four-way stop during festival weekends. Sheriff ’s deputies were regularly stationed there to keep vehicles moving during the festival. Several years ago, the county installed a roundabout, which now keeps traffic flowing in all directions.

Kutz said in the past 10 years the traffic problems have decreased. This isn’t just because of improvements. Kutz said tulip fans are getting more savvy. They take roads less travelled or come on weekdays to avoid the heaviest crowds.

Kutz said other road improvements are planned, like a new roundabout at Fir Island Road and Pioneer Highway, another trouble spot in Conway where

Kutz suggested that rather than get frustrated with heavy traffic during the festival, do some research and develop a game plan to avoid getting stuck.

An unexpected find.

Blooms boost businesses Tourist spending provides yearly bump for Skagit County establishments By Mark Stayton

The tulips and daffodils growing in brilliant waves and gardens across Skagit County farmland bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area every spring.

W

hile the total economic impact this influx of travelers brings the county is tough to quantify, local hotels, restaurants, retail shops and tour companies have come to rely and plan for a boost of business often called “Christmas in April.” The last large-scale economic census of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was completed in 2000 for the former state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development. That census

estimated more than 350,000 people attended, spending nearly $14 million and contributing $2.8 million in increased wages. The festival has grown in size and duration since then. According to a 2012 survey released by the Tulip Festival organizers, people from outside Skagit County comprised 75 percent of the attendees and spent an average of $206.97 while here. The survey found the festival was the primary reason for the trip with 84 percent of travelers. The April boost isn’t just felt near the fields. At least 26 official Tulip Festival events take place in all parts of the county, from Sedro-Woolley to Anacortes and Mount Vernon to La Conner, even spreading down to Camano Island.

Over the years, the Kiwanis Noon Club of Mount Vernon’s salmon barbecue has become as traditional as the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival itself.

W

ith volunteers lined up, planning underway and deserving causes ready to benefit, this year is unlikely to be an exception. This year’s barbecue is scheduled to be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 5 to April 27 at Hillcrest Park Lodge. The goal is to raise $100,000 to give toward a variety of causes, which the club does every year with the barbecue’s proceeds.

Event chair Doug Faber said last year’s event raised $80,000, which went to causes ranging from scholarships for local students to car seats and many in between. He said the event requires plenty of work and preparation, but is bolstered by local businesses, community members and volunteers who are happy to help. “We have 26 shifts a day, with four people per shift … that’s a lot of shifts, and a lot of community members. But we have a lot of fun,” he said. “Everyone has a fun time, even though it’s busy.”

Tulip Festival ambassadors turn on the charm By Kera Wanielista

Every year, two students from Skagit County are chosen to be the youth ambassadors for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, with their duties including things like heralding parades, greeting visitors and talking tulips with the governor.

T

his year’s ambassadors are LillyRose Day, 11, a fifth-grader from Island View Elementary School in Anacortes, and Sean Cowan, 10, a fourthgrader at Immaculate Conception Regional School in Mount Vernon. “It’s a great privilege to be a tulip ambassador,” Cowan said.

“I think this is a fantastic opportunity for a child to become involved in their community,” said Cindy Verge, executive director of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

“Telekinesis,” Day said. “So when I was laying on the couch and my parents asked me to do something, I could just do it with my mind.”

The winners each year are chosen by a panel of five judges who use a series of criteria to help them pin down the best ambassadors from a pool of fourth- and fifth-graders. This year, 82 kids signed up for the event, which was held in February at the Cascade Mall.

Each prospective ambassador was asked, “Why do you want to be a Tulip Festival Ambassador?” and another “secret” question that varied from what they want to be when they grow up to what kind of super powers he or she would have.

The Tulip Festival ambassadors have been a tradition for nearly all of the Tulip Festival’s 31 years, Verge said. They also attend the Tulip Festival Gala, among other things.

Cowan and Day both said they were surprised to be chosen, but they were in good company. The proverbial baton was passed off to them from last year’s winners, Carlos Roques and Jennifer Ramirez. “I hope that the kids who do it this year have as much fun as I did, because I had so much fun,” Roques said. Cowan said he was looking forward to meeting new people and going different places during his time as a tulip ambassador. “It’s going to be a very interesting year,” Cowan said. “And it’s going to be a very fun year and I’m looking forward to it.” goskagit.com
