The events in town are generally family oriented, from Woodfest during Tulip Festival which focuses on student woodworking projects, an Easter egg hunt, a kids’ fishing derby in May, hula hoop, jump rope and eating competitions during Blast from the Past in June, the Loggerodeo with its carnival and grand parade in July, Halloween parade and merchant trick or treating in October, and wonderful Christmas events in December. If you want your family to experience something genuine, Sedro-Woolley offers plenty for visitors and residents alike. For motor enthusiasts there are two car shows every year in June and September and a motorcycle run in the summer.
Hitting Highway 20 or Highway 9 in any rig reminds you to enjoy the drive as you pass through the forests, mountains, and small villages away from the hustle and bustle of the Interstate. The town has several local parks and is surrounded by outdoor recreational opportunities from the North Cascades to the San Juan Islands, all just a short drive from the heart of Sedro-Woolley. At Riverfront Park on the Skagit River one can find plenty of picnic areas and restrooms, city maintained shelters that can be rented for reunions or other events, a dog park, boat launch, and RV park. The Rotary Club built an amphitheater a few years ago and has been holding free summer concerts in the park. In 2012 the Rotary Club also built a new state of the art skate park that now attracts skateboarders from all over the region.

What Makes Sedro-Woolley Unique? T
The City of Sedro-Woolley is located on the banks of the beautiful Skagit River and is the gateway to the North Cascades recreation area, which attracts 750,000 visitors annually. It is conveniently situated just minutes from Interstate 5 on Highway 20 and midway between Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle, Washington. The city’s downtown district is decorated with historical murals, life-size cedar statues, and attractive gas lamp replicas.
he City of Sedro-Woolley has old timber-town charm and takes pride in its logging roots, but is also resilient today in the wake of timber’s decline. The Sedro-Woolley Chamber of Commerce organizes many lively events each year drawing locals and visitors alike that honor the town’s heritage and celebrate its progress. Founder’s Day in September is a reminder from the Sedro-Woolley Museum of the city’s beginning as two separate towns. Sedro-Woolley originates from two settlements, one founded by Mortimer Cook and the other by Phillip A. Woolley, built on the promise of the logging industry in Skagit County. Mortimer Cook actually initially named the 34 acres of land he settled in 1884 “Bug,” in reference to mosquitoes along the Skagit River. Cook’s wife and the settlers that came influenced a change from the insect-inspired name to Sedra, the Spanish word for cedar. Due to a misspelling, it

What Makes Sedro-Woolley Unique? became Sedro instead. Meanwhile, Woolley was also setting up shop, first for a sawmill and then for a town, not too far from Sedro along the river. Unlike Cook’s creative names, Woolley chose to stick with his own surname for the town he founded. The two towns grew and quickly became rivals. Then in 1898 they agreed to put their rivalry behind them and mesh into one. Both, however, refused to give up their names, resulting in the hyphenation. While Woolley’s name is built-in, Cook’s name is written on the road that serves as the main route through town to Interstate 5. In 2013, the city worked to improve
Cook Road’s connection to Highway 20, inserting a roundabout at one of the busiest intersections in town and making way for a second in 2014. Because of its placement on Highway 20, Sedro-Woolley is referred to as the gateway to the North Cascades, with endless recreation opportunities to the east. It serves as an access point to the North Cascades National Park and Mount BakerSnoqualmie National Forest, both of which are headquartered in town. Sedro-Woolley itself also offers great recreation. On the south bank of the Skagit River, Riverfront Park is a popular spot with more
than 50 picnic tables, a covered picnic area and two shelters with barbecue pits. The park also has four restrooms and an RV park, as well as a boat launch. The city’s Rotary Club built a skate park in 2012 that hosted its first competition in September 2013 and now attracts skateboarders from all over the state. It’s right in town behind the City Hall building. The city has also made improvements to Highway 9 and has improved pedestrian and bicycle access in parts of town, making neighborhoods and businesses safer and easier to reach. Today, the tight-knit downtown business community works hard to maintain a welcoming, historic core that has seen some revitalization in recent years. Janicki Industries, which creates hightech molds for the aerospace and maritime industries, is headquartered in town.

While You’re Here • Take a look at the murals and wood carving statues downtown, most of them along Metcalf Street. The carvings are auctioned at the end of the annual Loggerodeo chainsaw carving event and local businesses purchase them to keep on display. Many of the painted murals were inspired by world-famous photographer Darius Kinsey, who had a photo studio in Sedro-Woolley in the late 1890s and is known for his emphasis on Western scenery, logging and railroads.
• Visit the 726-acre Northern State Recreation Area just east of town off Highway 20 between Helmick and Fruitdale roads. The regional park offers hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as a disc-golf course at the site of the former Northern State Hospital.

2014 marks the 100-Year Anniversary of the 1914 Bank Robbery! The day
was Saturday, October 17, 1914. It was a cool, drizzly day and many townspeople were weary after a series of robberies over the summer. Strangers seemed always to be milling about and there were rumors that shady-looking Russian men were loitering and picking fights at the saloons on Metcalf Street near the bank. Roy Bever and his girlfriend Frances Hubbs took a horse and buggy into town that evening. After tying up they strolled east on Ferry Street and stopped at the corner of Ferry and Metcalf across from the Wixson Hotel right as the shooting began. The safe at the First National bank, located in the corner of the Wixson Hotel, was bulging with cash from a big Friday

Events & Activities payroll. Three masked, armed bandits burst into the bank and yelled “hands up” with their guns drawn. Cashier John Guddall held up his hands as demanded, but he was holding his .38 revolver, which he shot repeatedly over the heads of the robbers. Bullets began flying between the cashier and the robbers as the bank assistants hid
behind their desks. Outside, two or three bandits began shooting automatic pistols aiming at people standing in the alleys and the glass windows of nearby businesses. One stood on Ferry Street, one on Metcalf, and the other in a concealed location. A few townsfolk, Marshal Villeneuve, and a visiting lawman from Snohomish County heard the trouble and tried to shoot at the robbers outside the bank but were unsuccessful. Inside the bank, the bandits cornered the cashier and demanded that he drop his gun and open the vault. Left with no option, Guddall complied and the robbers quickly identified the bags holding gold coins, tucking them under their arms along with one bag of silver totaling $11,649. Paper money was left littered all over the bank floor. They brazenly exited out the front door of the bank and joined their band mates. The man who appeared to be the group leader gleefully shook the money bags, then the thieves ran east down Ferry Street and turned north on Murdock before disappearing in the dark heading toward Duke’s Hill.
who had robbed various locations during that summer of crime. Over the next couple of days, nearly a hundred men searched the woods and the areas around the Northern Pacific railroad tracks leading north out of town. A hunter discovered a makeshift camp that the robbers had apparently set up north of town near the tracks. The police concluded that the men stayed in the camp until Monday before hopping the Great Northern Train north to British Columbia through Blaine. When the robbers arrived in Canada at the North Bluff crossing near Hazelmere they were greeted by train officials and American and Canadian officers at 3:30 a.m. The Bellingham Herald reported in its October 23, 1914 paper that a gun battle ensued during which two of the robbers were shot and killed and one robber later died of his wounds after initially escaping. Cliff Adams, a Canadian immigration officer, was also killed in the battle. A total of $4,000 was recovered from the money belts of the two men. There are many accounts of the robbery including some confusion over the number of robbers involved and whether the men were dressed as women! Most of the information that we have was taken from local newspaper accounts. There are some locals who were raised on stories of the event such as eighty-seven year old Keith Benjamin of Ferndale, whose grandfather was Milford Benjamin. Milford was on the Great Northern Railway Bridge the night they killed two of the bandits and after the shootings he picked up a .38 caliber bullet that he later gave to his grandson. skagitvisitor.com

Woodfest Normally held the first weekend in April, an exception will be made in 2015 due to the placement of Easter. The event will be April 11th and 12th, 2015. Sedro-Woolley’s Woodfest is a sanctioned Tulip Festival Event: it is a part of the Skagit Valley Tulip festival but Sedro-Woolley honors its logging history by focusing the celebration on wood products and carving. The festival aims to bring in a variety of vendors and display booths from chainsaw carvers, wood turners, traditional carvers, wood crafters, artisans, and educational exhibits. Approximately 25 students from Sedro-Woolley, Stanwood, Kamiak, and the Northwest Career and Technical Center at Meridian exhibit their work and compete against each other’s wood-working creations at Sedro-Woolley High School. Alumni are also welcome to return and exhibit their work. The students carve tables, chess boards, bird feeders, etc. then sell their wood creations through auction. Many years there are wood working demonstrations and chainsaw carvings by the Northwest Washington Wood Turners and the Northwest Corner Woodworkers Association. The Wood Turners award one student with a handmade wooden plane; other prizes are donated by local merchants. For more information visit the Woodfest SedroWoolley page on Facebook.
