aBouT The cover

This year’s cover was the brainchild of Anacortes American Publisher Jack Darnton. The 8-foot driftwood tree was put together by the editorial staff on a sunny afternoon while the tide was out at the beach at Rotary Park at the bottom of Cap Sante. Darnton and reporter Jacob Buckenmeyer built the tree using driftwood found on the beach. The decorations from the Anacortes Boys & Girls Club, including the handmade paper chain, were put on with help from reporters Kimberly Jacobson and Joan Pringle. The nutcracker atop the tree was borrowed from Fidalgo DanceWorks. It is the same one used in its annual production of “The Nutcracker,” which121656_Ad_Slick_ATD is coming up Dec. 7-8. Once the tide came in to surround the bottom of the tree, Jacobson went to work taking the photo. Then everything was returned — including the 121656_Ad_Slick_ATD 9/24/13 7:17 AM Page 2 driftwood, which went back above the high tide line.

christmas shopping in anacortes In August 2012, the Anacortes Boys & Girls Club moved from its longtime home at the Washington National Guard building on M Avenue to the basement at City Hall — right across the street from the Anacortes American office. The club has done wonderful things with the location, setting up several different areas to serve the multiple purposes of the club, which offers targeted programs for youth, ages 6 (or in first grade) to 18. The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need help the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible

citizens. Its focus is helping all young people succeed. Perhaps because of its new proximity and the good work it does, when it came time to think of who needs Christmas gifts from the American, we chose the club and its members. With a handful of gift ideas from club Director Angela Freeberg, we scattered around town to purchase gifts that can be used in the various areas of the club, everything from fun art supplies to comfy pillows for the teen center. The club is open 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with teen nights 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays. Find out more at www.skagitraisesgreatkids.org.

Game room and education room

The club’s game room is right at the entrance as you walk down the north stairs at City Hall. In it are pool, air hockey and foosball tables. Board games and sports balls for the gym area are checked out at a counter at the back of the room staffed by a member volunteer. Other games that are more strategic and cognitive are kept in the education room on the other side of the basement. “Any high-yield learning in games we try to focus on,” said club Director Angela Freeberg. Boxes & Bears has a grand selection of board games for every age and just about every craze from “My Little Pony Monopoly” to “The Walking Dead Board Game.” The shop owned by Dianne Moritz at 709 Commercial Ave. also has travel games, puzzles, and coloring books designed by an Anacortes resident. Moritz helped us pick out “Doodle Jump” for the kids and gave us a deal from the regular price of $29.95 down to $27 including tax. The 4-D board game by Ravensburger is for two to four players and based on a video game of the same name. More then 25 million copies of the app have reportedly either sold or been downloaded. The goal of the app and the game is to get the Doodler up a series of platforms without falling. Using four doodler cards, six dice, and 27 power and expert tiles, the winner is the first to get his or her Doodler to the top of the board. Moritz had hard evidence the game was a hit with kids. 4

Nick King, 10, left, Rosa McFadden, 11, and Isabel Barnes, 8, show off games at the club. She overheard a few visiting her store say it looked fun. Others looking for gifts at Boxes & Bears can fill out their own Christmas wish list. Moritz will keep the list on file so friends and family know exactly what you want under your tree. Other needs in the club’s game room include pool sticks and air hockey accessories, and board and card games are always appreciated. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Power hour homework area One thing people don’t seem to realize about the Boys & Girls Club is it’s not only a place for fun, but a place for learning. The homework area is an example of that. The area called Power Hour, complete with volunteer helpers, is available to kids 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Kids can get help with their homework and complete their required reading. The center is always looking for more volunteers as well as school supplies in the way of paper and pencils. Club Director Angela Freeberg asked us to choose a couple presents that would help them along.

We did our shopping at Rite Aid Pharmacy, knowing it carries a good amount of school and office supplies. We picked up five vibrantly colored college-ruled notebooks, a pack of 10 mechanical pencils and three twopacks of classic pink erasers. Minus a few items for the arts room at the club, our total came to just short of $20. Rite Aid, 1517 Commercial Ave., not only has school supplies but many items that would make great Christmas gifts including small appliances, bath and beauty gift sets, and even gifts as personal as canvas wall art made from your favorite photo. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Part of doing homework is a Little reward Youth get prizes for completing homework assignments and reading. They also earn points for doing educational activities, like practicing technology skills and learning about the physics behind music. We stopped at Read Me a Story to see what gifts they have and found just what we were looking for. We picked up a jump rope, five RingPop flavored lip glosses (orange cream, berry blast and green apple), a car pen with 12 moving parts (and it goes), a butterfly checkers travel game, a 10-color pen and a pair of Super Sip ‘n’ Swirl drinking glasses. Club Director Angela Freeberg said kids love goopie stuff so we also got three Dr. Wacko’s Map Lab color goo (neon yellow, orange and blue) and some Rainbow glow dough (stretchy, stingy, glow-inthe-dark fun!). Our total was $55.05 with items ranging in price from $2.99 to $7.99. While out and about at Rite Aid I spotted Flarp! noise putty and grabbed two for a total of about $6. — Kimberly Jacobson, staff writer

healthy snack habits What student isn’t ready for a snack after school? The Boys & Girls Club makes sure there’s something to fill members’ tummies — and it also works to instill healthy habits. The Healthy Habits program is designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning. From the gym to the learning center to the arts and crafts room, the central themes of good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being are emphasized. Club youth who participate in Healthy Habits will understand the benefits of eating smart and being physically active. Lessons in the Healthy Habits program include Stamp Out Portion Distortion, Eating for Energy and Building Healthy Bones and Teeth. Club Director Angela Freeberg said last year the club started putting a greater focus on health, hiring a coordinator to run the programs.

“There’s so much in the media with childhood obesity, we felt it was good to put more emphasis on it,” she said. We went to The Market at Anacortes with a list of suggested food items in hand. We started with the snack aisle, grabbing two variety packs of granola bars (chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and s’mores), whole grain popcorn and a party pack of Fruit Roll-ups, Fruit Gushers and Fruit by the Foot. Then it was on to the refrigerated section, where we picked up string cheese and some yummy-looking Tillamook mini cheese packs. (The kids are lucky they got those — we were tempted to eat them ourselves.) With juice on sale we were able to get four 64-ounce bottles of apple juice, apple cider and white grape juice — all 100 percent juice.

We added up our total and decided to get some Ritz Handi-Snacks crackers and cheese dip as well. Our total came to $44.53. Other snacks the club is interested in include big bags of pretzels, chips and salsa, fresh fruit and cans of powdered drink mix. It also needs 5-ounce paper cups. — Kimberly Jacobson, staff writer

youth of The Month Boys & Girls Club kids get recognized as part of the Youth of the Month program, which recognizes and affirms their self-worth and accomplishments. Staff members encourage club members and provide positive reinforcement as they make improvements and experience successes. What child, no matter the age, doesn’t enjoy an afternoon or evening at the movies? So to reward those youth, we decided to purchase four movie gift cards from Nikki Bonner at Anacortes Cinemas. Each are $10 — the price of a regular

adult ticket that covers ages 13 and older. That brought our total to only $40 for at least eight hours of entertainment. Anacortes Cinemas, which is part of Far Away Entertainment, shows first-run movies popular with audiences on three screens as well as performances from The Royal Ballet and The Metropolitan Opera. The box office and theater at 415 O Ave. is open 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day, so there’s plenty of time to get movie gift cards for your loved ones for Christmas. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Conor Powell, 12, stands in front of photos of just a few Youth of the Month honorees.

Teen center The teen center is the dedicated space at the club for kids in seventh through 12th grade. Several couches centered around low tables make great gathering areas away from the younger kids at the club. It’s a little quieter and a little more sophisticated. With teens, the Boys & Girls Club focuses on leadership, service and career. Programs focusing on those areas include the Keystone Club, a service learning program; Junior Staff, which helps teens explore a career in youth or human services; and Career

Launch, a nine-week internship as a teen leader. Teen nights at the club are 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays. We headed to Tracys Furniture at 1920 Commercial Ave. for some ideas to fill out the teen center. We had something comfortable in mind — like a beanbag chair. Instead, Nora Moses-Winyard helped us find a couple throw pillows — big enough to sit on and comfortable enough to make the hard floor a bit softer. The two 26-inch-square Fiona pillows have tan backgrounds with a black thread, leafy design and a big black button in the middle, giving them a classic form. The pillows were originally $119 but were marked down to $89 and then again to only $79 for the pair. The total with tax was $85.48. And just like every purchase at Tracys, it was followed in a few days by a personalized thank you card in the mail. Just remember to hide your card if the gift you’re buying is a surprise for someone in your household. Tracys has lots of potential gifts such as rugs, furniture and knickknacks at similarly marked down prices. But even at full price, people typically walk out of the store thinking “what a deal.” — Joan Pringle, staff writer

For the creative minded, the Boys & Girls Club has a special room just for art. Whether kids want to draw a picture or make a collage, there’s an outlet for many artistic pursuits. And around holidays, there are often planned projects to entice new expression. We decided to give the fine arts room a little push with some new supplies. We picked up a 16-pack of washable Crayola markers for $6.79 at Rite Aid as we were stocking up on homework supplies. (I’m a fan of unscented versions.) We also stopped off at Walgreens and picked up a six-pack of Elmer’s glue sticks, 10 Elmer’s classic glitter glue pens and 96 sheets of construction paper for a total of $12.97. The art room is always in need of glue sticks and hot glue, scotch or masking tape, water-based markers, staplers (6-inch) and staples, old continuous feed printer paper, Popsicle sticks, tongue depressors and clothes pins (the ones that look like little people). — Kimberly Jacobson, staff writer

Give To others This holiday season Christmas time has always been a time for giving, and in Anacortes there are plenty of people who need that extra hand during the holidays. Luckily there are several organizations in town helping and hoping to match up those who have with those in need. Giving trees are one of the easiest ways to give. There’s one at the Senior Activity Center, 1701 22nd St., for Meals on Wheels recipients. Tags on the tree hold someone’s Christmas wish. All you have to do it take a tag, purchase the new gift, attach the tag, indicate whether the unwrapped gift is for a male or female and leave it at the center for distribution. Meals on Wheels is a national senior nutrition program with volunteers right here in Anacortes who deliver meals to homebound seniors every day. Suggested gift prices range from $5 to $20. Gifts include flashlights, nightlights, candles, socks, slippers, hats, mittens, gloves, fleece throws or blankets, 2014 calendars, mugs, clocks with large numbers, picture frames, hand soap, lotion, hand towels and gift cards to local grocery stores. If your holiday season is already too busy, you can donate money so that center staff can do the shopping instead. The gifts will be distributed the week of Dec. 16. The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program places trees throughout town decorated with tags with the names of children 17 and younger and their gift wish for the holiday. People can take a tag, purchase the gift and either return it to the angel tree or the Salvation Army. Lt. Ryan Boyd said the organization 10

WednesdAy, november 27, 2013

had 13 angel trees scattered about town last year in places such as Ace Hardware, U.S. Bank and Mount Erie Elementary School. To find out where trees are located this year, call 2936682. Belinda Dye, managing director at the Anacortes 100 Food Bank, said any kind of food for the holidays is welcome, including hams and turkeys. The organization is also hoping for gift donations for children, newborn to 16 years of ages. Items can be dropped off at the food bank at 512 Fourth St. any time as long as you call first to make sure Dye is there. The number is 293-6445. Dye will be handing out food bags on Dec. 20 but expects to be delivering food and gifts to homes up until Christmas Eve. The food bank at the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Mary Catholic Church collects and distributes food for those in need, along with other items such at toilet paper, shampoo, soap and diapers. On top of that, the organization helps people who receive utility shut-off and eviction notices, and it helps purchase prescriptions, said food bank President Laurie Liberty. “Whatever comes to us, we give it away,” Liberty said. So if you’re thinking about giving to those less fortunate this year, think of food such as pasta, sauce, hamburger helper and canned veggies as well at the other items mentioned. But also consider monetary gifts for St. Vincent De Paul that are always appreciated, Liberty said. What’s more, the church accepts clothing, bedding and other household goods for its twice-a-year rummage sale.

People in need are given vouchers so they can shop for free. All items can be dropped off at the church, 4001 St. Mary’s Dr., whenever Liberty is there, which is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Food bank hours are 10 to 11 a.m. every Friday. The Salvation Army food bank provides for people year-round. As Christmas time approaches, they’re looking for more holiday items such as turkey and stuffing in addition to other food stuffs, said Lt. Josh Boyd. Items can be dropped off at 3001 R Ave. 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign starts the day after Thanksgiving and ends Christmas Eve. Bell ringers will be in front of the post office, Safeway, Walgreens and The Market at Anacortes. The goal this year for Anacortes is $40,000. The national goal is $3 million. The Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross is always appreciative of monetary donations but is also in great need of volunteers right now. Ron Conlin, disaster services lead, said it doesn’t matter what walk of life people are from or how much time they want to devote, they’re needed. Training is provided. Those interested can call (800) Red Cross (733-2767) or go to www.redcross. org to find out more. In Anacortes, call 293-2911 for more information. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

‘celebrate the season’ event supports schools

The Anacortes Schools Foundation will launch its first major fundraiser this December with “Celebrate the Season,” a family-oriented event that complements other community holiday activities. The event is 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center. A ticketed fundraising event follows at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. On Friday, adult teams will have four hours to create their gingerbread house beginning at 11 a.m. The student teams begin at 3 p.m. and have until 5 p.m. to finish. The gingerbread awards will be judged by a panel of community leaders, with awards being announced at the Chamber of Commerce’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. Also enjoy photos with Santa, handmade Christmas gift and poinsettia sales, crafts and games, holiday performances and food and beverages. During the day on Saturday, Starbucks employees will give kids and their families an opportunity to decorate their own gingerbread houses. Many of the Friday events will also continue.

Men's and Women's A Holiday Tradition

Art Shotwell, ASF board president and co-chair of the event, said they expect the event will become a family tradition for the community and allow the Schools Foundation to broaden its fundraising efforts. “We’re getting great support by students and well as businesses in Anacortes,” he said.”ASF has been a part of this community for nearly 30 years benefiting students at all levels with college and vocational scholarships, early learning support and more recently, STEM enrichment opportunities.” Some Anacortes High School students are decorating 8-foot-tall plywood trees that are part of the decorations and other students are creating special ornaments for the dinner centerpieces. The signature event of the celebration is the “Dream It Dinner” on Saturday with doors open at 5:30 p.m. The evening includes a catered dinner and a limited but lively auction followed by entertainment by the A-Town Big Band. The dinner is catered by Gere-a-Deli with a generous gift from Trident Seafoods. Tickets to the public days and the dinner are available at John L. Scott Realty, Read Me a Story or Johnny Picasso’s. Prices are $5 per

person or $20 per family for “Celebrate the Season” community days. Tickets for the dinner fund raiser are $35 per person. Sponsors of the event include the Port of Anacortes, Trident Seafoods, Fisher and Sons, Chandler’s Square, Walgreens, Skagit Island Orthopedic Clinic, Papa Murphy’s Pizza and Home Depot. All proceeds from the “Celebrate the Season” event will support STEM enrichment initiatives of the Anacortes School District.

christmas on The docks comes To Marina Since winter weather here in Anacortes can change from one night to the next, it’s difficult to pick the one day that will be clear and calm enough for the annual lighted Christmas boat parade through the Guemes Channel. That’s why Greg Mustari, organizer of the parade for a number of years now, is making the event more about the boats, the lights and the Christmas of it all. For three evenings decorated boats will be on display at C dock at the Cap Sante Marina — Friday through Sunday, Dec. 20-22 — for the first 2013 Cap Sante Christmas on the Docks. Families will be invited to walk the docks, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, and vote for their favorite decorated boat. If the weather does hold, the boat parade will begin at dusk on Saturday. A great place to view

the parade is from the Port of Anacortes’ Pier 1 inside the Transit Shed Event Center. The parade will be timed to be right before the evening performance of Geoffrey Castle’s Celtic Christmas Concert. Boat owners are asked to be a part of the festivities by bringing their boat to C dock anytime on Dec. 20 for free moorage all three days of the event. To sign up, contact event coordinators Greg Mustari at (360) 507-9999 or gregmustari@ comcast.net or Kelly Libby at (425) 359-7078 or kellylibby@wavecable.com. Sign-up sheets are also at the Cap Sante Marina harbormaster’s office. Visitors to the docks are asked to bring an unwrapped gift for a child for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots or a canned goods/cash donation for the Anacortes Boys & Girls Club.

celtic christmas concert returns To Port Warehouse The featured performer at this year’s annual Geoffrey Castle’s Celtic Christmas Concert will be multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer Beth Quist. Quist was lead soprano and instrumentalist for the creation band in Cirque du Soleil’s “KA” and currently performs with Sherefé, which specializes in Balkan and Middle Eastern music. She plays piano, guitar, flute and various other instruments. In four years of Celtic Christmas Concerts, thousands of dollars and in-kind donations have been raised for the Anacortes Seafarers’ Memorial Foundation, Toys for Tots, Anacortes Boys & Girls Club, Rick Epting Foundation of the Arts, and the Anacortes School District’s After School Arts Program, said organizer Linda Lipke. “Geoffrey Castle’s Christmas Celebrations have become a holiday tradition,” Lipke said. “For the last four years Christmas magic is brought alive in an old fish warehouse in Anacortes.” The concert is Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center. The matinee performance is at 4 p.m. and the evening show is 6:30 following the lighted Christmas boat parade. Cost is free with a suggested donation of an unwrapped toy
