SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY?

Few Americans have adequate savings, which can sabotage even the best budget when times get tough

lthough a majority of Americans maintain a household budget, just 38 percent have enough savings to pay for unexpected expenses according to a recent Bankrate.com report. This lack of savings is problematic for the Americans’ financial well-being because even small expenses like an emergency room visit or car repair can undermine a budget. “Without an adequate rainy-day fund, we are all living on a very slippery financial slope,” Gail Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, said in a statement on the report. “The unexpected, unplanned expense is go-

ing to rear its ugly head and usually at the most inopportune time.” Unsurprisingly, age, wealth and education are all correlated with savings funds. The survey showed that millennials are the least prepared age group – only 33 percent have enough in their savings accounts for emergencies compared to 44 percent of seniors. Repercussions from the Great Recession may be to blame for inadequate savings, but both the improving economy and increasing number of household budgets indicate a promising future. “People hopefully will not go back to the kind of shop-till-you-drop response to good econom-

ic news and put away that emergency fund,” Eleanor Blayney, CFP professional and consumer advocate for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, said in a statement. Of the 82 percent of American households that keep a budget, the most popular methods are: • Pen and paper – 36 percent • Computer program or smartphone app – 26 percent • In their heads – 18 percent The majority of these budgets are spent on food and rent/mortgage. Other popular expenses are utilities, transportation, medical bill and student loans.

Even though most people start their New Year’s resolutions on January 1, some people add resolutions as the year progresses. For some, that goal is realizing the dream of homeownership. Beginning to build savings should be a priority for potential buyers because it can take some time. According to NAR’s report, it took half of buyers a year or less to save for a down payment, while another 19 percent said it took between one and two years to build their savings account. Additionally, 29 percent said they needed more than two years to save.

Built and designed by Las Vegas builder Blue Heron, this year’s 5,891-square-foot show home provides four bedrooms, and a bevy of green amenities, state-ofthe-art technologies, and impressive architectural features, including: • Photovoltaic solar panels; closed-cell foam roofing material with a highly reflective cool roof coating; open-cell spray foam insulation; highefficiency water heaters; a weather-sensitive irrigation system that automatically calibrates usage based on immediate climate; intelligent fireplaces; hydronic air handlers; and sustainable building materials. These eco-conscious features, and more, combine to help the home achieve a net-zero rating and an

astounding HERS -13 rating, meaning the home actually produces more energy than it consumes. • Spatially efficient open living areas designed to flow from one into the other, such as a bountiful kitchen that segues into indoor and outdoor dining areas; a multipurpose loft complete with an entertainment area, wet bar and wine storage/tasting area that connects via pocket doors to a rear deck and central courtyard; a twostory private casita with high ceilings, walk-in closet and access to a secondlevel balcony; and a sky deck with full views of the city and mountains. • A backyard concept that utilizes an infinity edge pool and spa, outdoor kitchen and a built-in fire feature; the exterior
