What’s Worth the Money? Real estate, despite an uneasy past few years, is seen as one of the safest investments you can make

old? Sure. Other jewelry? Why not? But real estate, a safe investment? Actually, a majority of Americans feel it’s among the safest. According to a Harris Poll of more than 2,300 adults, 72 percent of Americans see owning a

home as a safe investment. In fact, even across generational lines, real estate is seen as a safe investment, with Matures (89 percent), Baby Boomers (77 percent), Gen Xers (70 percent) and Millennials (63 percent) all seeing owning a home as a safe investment. Not all real estate is created equal, though. Just 44 percent of Americans see owning an investment property – as opposed to a primary residence – as a safe investment. The aforementioned gold (65 percent) and jewelry (59 percent) also are seen as safe.

Still, real estate is seen as having a strong earning potential, both as an investment property (43 percent agree) and a primary residence (36 percent). So, what’s risky? A large swatch of Americans – 80 percent – think owning your own business is a risky investment; more than two-thirds also think stock/bonds (68 percent) are a risky investment. But, perhaps not surprisingly, those with more money in investable assets have a lower perception of risk in these two categories than those with less in investable assets, who assert a higher risk.
