We will examine skating quality, component scores, grade of execution and technical strategies. With ongoing changes in our sport, it is imperative for coaches and officials to be educated and in turn, to educate our skaters. Our panel of experts include world renowned Edge Specialist and Choreographer Anne Schelter, and ISU Officials Leslie Keen, Jodi Abbott, Karen Howard, and Pam Chislett. An ISU Technical Specialist will be confirmed soon. These experts will share with us how we can recognize quality, and distinguish between good, very good, and excellent, as we observe and dissect skating programs and elements. 2014 Section ACGM & Awards Banquet Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut held its 2014 Annual Conference, General Meeting and Awards Banquet on May 3, 2014 at the Edmonton Marriott at River Cree Resort. This annual event was successful and provided Section members the opportunity to gather for a day of learning, a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, and to look forward to the upcoming season. The workshop, “Bringing it All Together” was presented by Skate Canada Resource Team Members, Leona Boyle, Tammy Gredianus, Events Committee Chair, Kristen Belcourt, and Manager, Athlete Development, Holly Henderson. Tammy and Leona presented an update on the NEW CanSkate program, providing the tools necessary to be ready for the full implementation of the programs in September 2014. Kristen and Holly delved into how to host STAR competitions, giving tips on how to run a successful event, and read/understand the STAR and competitive report cards. Thank you to our presenters for this very informative presentation. The keynote presentation “Developing the Young Athlete: Key issues for Parents and Coaches” presented by Duso’s Fresh Pasta and Sauces was lead by Dr. Vicki Harber. This interactive seminar detailed the important issues surrounding the developing young athlete. Topics within the seminar included early specialization in a single sport, injury prevention for female athletes, the role of physical literacy and the coach-athlete relationship. Thank you Vicki and Duso’s for this eye-opening keynote presentation. The Annual General Meeting reviewed the activities of the Section from 2013-2014. To view the Annual Report, please click here. The Awards Banquet kicked off with the Triple Flip Fashion Show, where Triple Flip fashions were modeled by Section skaters. Susan Humphreys and Jamie Salé, did an outstanding job as the Masters of Ceremonies for the evening. The evening celebrated the accomplishments of Section athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers. Thank you Jaime and Susan for being the emcees for the evening and helping to make the night so memorable for the award recipients. Now that the Section’s 2014 ACGM is over, it is time to start thinking about next year’s event. The 2015 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut ACGM and Awards Banquet will be held in Red Deer, Alberta at the Sheraton Red Deer Hotel. We hope to see you next year! Thank you to all the attendees, presenters, emcees, volunteers, Region’s Committee, and Special Events SubCommittee who made the Section’s 2014 ACGM & Awards Banquet a success!
