Karen and Bob Zielaskowski are a couple in their mid-60s on the verge of full retirement. Looking to settle down and enjoy the Bach life, the couple is looking for a space in two locations where they will feel safe aging in place. In addition to being practical for their changing needs, they would also like the space to be aesthetically pleasing with a clean farm house feel. Family is very important to Karen and Bob, so a large kitchen with an open plan into the living room to accommodate for social gatherings is a must. Space for grandkids is mandatory as they will be coming to stay for long periods of time. A space to enjoy the outdoors, a replace, and the use of local materials are also ideal for this couple.

Strong in meaning, but light and airy in form, a will be represented through the use of heavier furniture for stability, but in light colors to keep that light and airy feeling the dreamcatcher portrays. The main circle of a dreamcatcher represents the circle of life, which the clients are now entering a new adventure of. Since they are planning on aging in place it is imperative that the design be universal to users of all years of life. Having accessible routes and new technologies in the bathrooms and kitchens will allow for extra support in the aging process. The main purpose of the dreamcatcher is to protect your family, especially children, from bad spirits. By making the heart of the home a space where family can gather and be protected within the house, it will re ect the importance of family the client values, especially with their grandkids. The natural characteristics the dreamcatcher brings, will be spread throughout by using a neutral color palette and local materials such as wood, stone and brick. Plants will be incorporated within to give a sense of nature as well as the use of sustainable materials to better the environment around. Local art and other items from each location will also be utilized throughout the space to pay respect to the local cultures.

Class: Studio II Skills Utilized: Hand Rendering, Photoshop, SketchUp, InDesign Co-Designers: Meagan Haley & Marra Lopes As an integral part of the campus community--both functionally and symbolically, many academic libraries are seeking innovative solutions which enable them to adapt to the ever-changing learning landscape. This means leveraging each unique space in the library to maximize the bene t for the university community. Strozier library has been a favored place on campus for both undergraduate and graduate students to study, conduct group work, and even meet friends. For this project, the Department of Interior Design & Architecture has partnered with Strozier Library leadership to explore potential opportunities for several key areas in the library and envision the future of university libraries. One component of the project was grounded in the current needs of the library, while the other helped to envision its future. My group and I were asked to re-imagine selected library spaces to accommodate the ever-changing needs of college students and library staff. To do this, we rst observed library spaces and then designed both a futuristic “library of the future space and a solution for the classroom and student lounge.

A is the inspiration for the Library of the Future and the Classroom Lounge due to it being a sustainable vehicle that provides a sense of direction and movement which are only possible if the path can be conquered. Modular furniture will emphasize collaboration and group work throughout the space, referencing the parts of a bicycle that work together to create one force. There will also be environmentally friendly materials throughout the space such as recycled furniture, natural wood materials, and non-toxic products which reference bikes being an ecofriendly form of transportation. The space will include pastel shades of fundamental colors which re ect the fundamental elements of a bike. Just as a bike assists one to arrive at a location, these spaces will provide the students with the tools they need to 12 complete their journey to their degree.

LOUNGE While designing the Currents Needs, Learning Hub and Lounge a few major design considerations were appropriate circulation and supportive lounge areas with seats that enable students to work ef ciently. The design supports these considerations by zoning the space into four different areas. This zoning will create natural circulation and accessibility. In addition to the lounge area, there will be versatile seating in the study areas in order to accommodate studying and lounging. The space includes a lounge area with side desks for study, a singular study space with individual chairs and alcoves and a group study area with canopy booth seating. To the right is a classroom with retractable computer desks that accommodates one hundred students and a central teaching platform for lecturing. This view is a closer look into the group study and lounge area. In the back a wool and silk wall mural is used to diffuse noise and add an ascetically pleasing feature. In front of the mural is lounge seating with side desks for students to work. Past the felt partitions are singular study chairs and on this side is the group study area with bar height seating and curved sofas. Two interesting features included are white board columns for additional collaboration and individual task lighting on the high-top table.

13

FUTURE This space provides a glimpse of what library spaces will include in the future years to come. Some of the main user needs for this space include both group and individual study features that include a balance between overhead and task lighting. In addition, in order to diffuse noise levels, there will be glass partitions to divide the space into separate areas. These partitions are also great because they allow for the natural light to reach more of the space. This view places you inside the lounge area which is in the center of the space. To the left is a glimpse of technology center with the retractable desktops and partitions. Here you can see the whiteboard columns and next to them are the individual study chairs. At the center are circular sofas that allow for relaxation or study. The portable side desks give students the option to work from this seating arrangement if they’d like. A notable feature within the space is the interior trees. Based on the research collected, trees are known to provide healthier air quality which assist with performance and concentration. Another key feature are the drop down ceiling canopies which is one of the many unique features that are speci ed for the space. These canopies include fundamental colors of pink, yellow, and blue and create a focal point within the lounge.

So far this past year (2018) over 350 department stores have closed with more locations planned to in the near future. This trend will continue with upwards of 1500 locations over the next 3 years. This project focuses on this recent issue that top makeup brands are facing which is a loss of thousands of counters by the end of 2020. To solve this issue, we were tasked with designing a makeup retail aisle in an upscale grocer. The Beauty House will serve as a place for people of all age and sex to purchase high end cosmetics with ease.

Cosmetic shoppers come in many forms: male, female, young, old, but no matter the shopper the experience should all be the same. Consumers that will be shopping for cosmetics in a grocery store are not your professional makeup artists. They do not wear tons of makeup and most likely prefer a more natural look. Taking this as inspiration, the cosmetic install will inspire and re ect natural beauty. Untreated wood and a neutral color palette will be accented by pops of green from plant life as well as pale pastels taken from owers. An asymmetric pergola will ground the space and give the users a feeling of protection within a greenhouse, mimicking the way plants are protected. Mirrors will also be used accented with lighting that mirrors natural light reminding the shoppers that beauty starts from within.

Class: Studio IV Skills Utilized: Revit, Lumion, Photoshop, InDesign Co-Designers: Meagan Haley & Marra Lopes This project includes exploring solutions within the local community, and making use of a pre-existing commercial building. It was important to the design team to provide a space that solves a local problem and provides the residents with a space that they will utilize. Therefore, the design team, which included fellow designers Marra Lopes and Meagan Haley, conducted research and distributed surveys. Based on the result, the designers recognized that Tallahassee lacks a place to buy locally grown products, produce, and spaces that promote human wellness. Thus, Local Harvest Marketplace began. It was to serve as a space that provides a farmer’s market, retail shops to support local small-scale businesses, an art studio, ten local food vendors, a tness space, and an adult lounge which includes a cocktail bar, beer garden, wine lounge, and activity area. The space will serve as a community gathering area and will promote community involvement.

36

: lacking access to locally sourced materials Lacking a space where residents can come and explore holistic materials that are locally sourced, Tallahassee, is locally bare. Local Harvest Marketplace is the solution to this sparse local environment by providing a place for neighborhood vendors to come and sell their goods and services. In order to embody the concept of locally bare within the market, the materials and architectural features will be honest in construction, leading to an industrial aesthetic which is commonly found in the city of Tallahassee. The space with strategically include unique zoning to promote uidity throughout the interior. Through the use of proper way nding, a natural color palette, and opportunities for community involvement, the space will promote human wellness and provide the users with a sense of belonging. Integration of natural light and biophilia, as well as strategic material selection will give the space a more organic feeling, tying back to home-grown products in the space. In short, Local Harvest will serve as an all-encompassing environment for residents to utilize while promoting community wellness.

GOALS Accessibility • Provide an easy navigable space with way nding systems and clear sightlines • Create a design that implements universal design principles and ADA regulations to support the variety of user needs Human Wellness • Create spaces that promote leisure as well as productivity to meet user needs by including work and study zones, lounge areas, and retail therapy • Utilize natural light to save energy and reduce the use of arti cial light to promote a sense of ef ciency among the users • Support vendors who provide holistic products, healthy food options, and organic produce to better community members health and wellbeing Community Connectivity • Provide local vendors with the opportunity to showcase their products to Tallahassee residents through unique marketing strategies • Allow ample room for vendor supply needs and appliances • Provide the Tallahassee community with a central meeting hub to provide opportunities for employment, volunteering, community involvement and support the local workforce
