The implementation of black and white throughout the bar and lounge is representational of both the day and the night; the peaceful and the untamed. The art used throughout the bar and lounge space is by Manuela Knaut, a South African artist knowns for her disorderly and playful creations.

Group Project

Spotify, launched in 2006, is a digital music, podcast, and video streaming service that gives users the ability to access millions of songs and other content from artists all over the world. Spotify’s office functions revolve around their core values – innovation, collaboration, sincerity, passion, and playfulness. We were provided with an existing structure that will be demolished and a three-story office building with a parking garage underneath will be built. The design aesthetic of both the interior and exterior of the building incorporates historical elements representative of Barcelona while maintaining a clean, concise, and efficient design that will provide employees with the proper amount of space, technology, and resources. Programs Used: Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Lightroom

S I T E

ANAL YSI S

Barcelona is Spain’s major Mediterranean port and commercial center and is famed for its individuality, cultural interest, and physical beauty. Often referred to as the “Paris of Spain, the city is a major cultural centre with a remarkable history. Since the late 1970s, with the official recognition of the Catalan language and the granting of significant levels of regional self-government, cultural life has been revitalized, bringing with it a new awareness of the depth and variety of Catalan culture.

Barcelona is part of a monetary union, the Eurozone, and of the EU single market. It is one of the richest regions in Southern Europe with a GDP per capita amounting to €30,700. Barcelona accounts for more than a quarter of Spain’s GDP. The city has a highly diversified economic structure. As a port city, Barcelona has a long mercantile history. Textiles are of traditional importance and one of the reasons the city is striving to become a major fashion center.

In acknowledging the 8 different groups of employees, we created an adjacency matrix to organize the space for the employee’s best interest. We took into consideration which groups of employees needed to be in close proximity, and which spaces needed to be more private versus public.

As you enter into the space, your eyes are drawn upward to the three story open atrium. In order to combat acoustical issues, the space was designed with a large sound wave wall that not only acts as a unique architectural feature but also as acoustic treatment. The sound wave wall was inspired by the organic shapes of Barcelona’s Park Guell. It also represents the sound waves that music produces.

Spotify’s work culture involves having areas where employees can work privately while still being apart of an open office concept. Incorporated into the Grand Piano Staircase are secluded nooks. Within the workspace are touchdown spaces that allow for informal meetings. Right: Restroom wayfinding

WASTE FACTS -New Sea Surface Disposal Site-Tokyo -“Pacific garbage patch now 3 times the size of France -Great Pacific Garbage Patch: the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world and is located between Hawaii and California -1.15-2.4 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year from rivers -New studies show that ingested plastic damages the internal organs of fish. This raises the question about the safety of our seafood. -plastic bottles are made up of the same polymer as polyester -the Japanese government disposes of 100,000 tons of seaside trash annually The oceans give us life. We give them plastic. If the oceans die, we die. Captain Paul Watson
