I don’t really do the marathon sets as much, but whenever I do them we get such good feedback.
“
A meticulous master of melody, a technically unparalleled performer, Sasha has been one of the world’s most in demand DJs for decades. This year you can catch him playing all night long at Electric Brixton on NYE and then one day at In:Motion in Bristol - here are his thoughts.
In the early nineties, when your profile had already blown up, it was said that London was the last city you had to crack. Is that true and if so why was that the case?
Considering all that, how does it feel to be coming back to London to headline this Last Night On Earth show on New Year’s Eve at Electric Brixton?
I just didn’t get that many offers to play in London at the time. When I did go down there the music was so different to what I was playing. I remember going down to do a Boy’s Own party one time. A lot of the records I was playing came from London, I was playing Leftfield and Fluke, but it was that kind of sound, that hybrid British house and techno.
It’s always great to come back to London, I’m really excited about New Year’s Eve. It’s always such a special night. I wanted to do something different this year, for the last few years I’ve been doing these events which have huge line ups. But I’m taking some time off the road at the moment to work in the studio and getting next year set up properly. I just wanted to do something different.
I think the club where I found it was closest to the kind of music I like to play was the Gardening Club and I ended up playing there quite a few times. But then I started to get booked to do these mad parties, like I was booked to play Kinky Disco and I played these Pushca parties, which were warehouse parties out in Acton. That’s where I met Craig Richards. There were some really great parties that we did in these warehouse spaces which were really decked out. But it took some time, London, because it had its own sound, a darker sound. Fabio and Grooverider were the kings down there, hardcore was definitely the main sound, so my kind of floaty housey techno stuff, I don’t know if it was being played in many places down there.
skiddle.com/newyear
I don’t do these longs sets any more. I normally play for three, three and a half hours, I don’t really do the marathon sets so much, but whenever I do them we get such good feedback. I will come out with ideas of things to do on New Year’s Eve, we were floating around lots of line up ideas, but a lot of the people I wanted to play with me were out of the country. Someone suggested, why don’t you do it on your own? It’s a long set but as I’m having some time off the road I think I’ll be raring to go by New Year’s Eve. And I’ll have a load of new music to play that I’ve been working on so it’ll be a great opportunity to test it out as well. Read the full interview at skiddle.com/news

Hamburg’s Marco Niemerski AKA Tensnake is responsible for creating some of clubland’s most instantly recognisable, feel-good groovers - most notably the sundrenched, steel drum driven ‘Coma Cat’. We caught up with with him ahead of his headline gig at Defected’s New Year’s Eve party at Ministry of Sound.

I’m very happy to end this fantastic year with Defected...
We’re approaching the end of the year now, what have been the highlights of the year for Tensnake? I would say the Ibiza season was very good for me this year. I played shows at Pacha and also at Glitterbox. I’m very happy with where the music is going these days, it’s constantly changing, it’s very openminded which I think is a plus. I had a really good summer. I’m in Los Angeles at the moment and I’m enjoying my time here because I’ve started working with people and building up a network. I also moved from Hamburg to Berlin and I’ve got a studio there so 2015 had a lot of new steps up. It was never boring, if anything it was exhausting. I didn’t make any music this year so I’m really looking forward to making music that will come out next year. You’re seeing out the year with Defected at their New Year’s Eve party at Ministry of Sound. You must have a great relationship with the team? Absolutely, I have a really, really good relationship with Defected. I feel like I owe a lot to them because they did an outstanding job with ‘Coma Cat’ back then. I also feel like they did and still do a very important role in the club scene. They’re constantly releasing good music and they’re constantly amazing me. Sometimes I think ‘I’ve heard it all’ and then they release something totally unexpected and I appreciate that. And I know Andy Daniell very well and I think he does a great job. I’m very happy to end this fantastic year with Defected. The NYE period is probably the biggest on the party calendar. What do you love about it all? I think New Year’s Eve is always a special night. It’s the end of the year and the period before New Year, Christmas time and stuff, people get loose, they’re relaxed and they don’t think about their jobs. It’s a very special time of the year. What I like in particular is that people will dress up and really make the effort and they’ll go to a special restaurant or they eat at home but they have a special dinner. It’s just a bit more glamorous than other nights I would say. Read the full interview at skiddle.com/news

Manchester is a bit of a home-coming for me as I lived here for two years and it’s my favourite city.
We’re nearing the end of 2015 now, and by all accounts you’ve had another blinder. What have been some of your standout moments? 2015 for me has been a year full of massive moments, one in particular was being a part of BBC Radio 1’s 20 year celebrations in Ibiza. I curated and hosted my own night as part of the event on the sunset strip outside Café Mambo and I was pinching myself the whole way through. I even had the honour of inviting my all time hero Erick Morillo onto the line-up and it was incredible. Things are hotting up as we come towards Christmas, especially when Blackpool Rocks kicks off on the 19th in your home town. How proud are you being involved in the event? What has you most excited about this year’s edition?
I’m excited to bring my Radio 1 colleague Annie Mac to the town, everyone asks for her all the time and they have for the last two years so I guess it’s third time lucky! I also can’t wait for Craig David. He’s touring his new concept TS5 which is him DJing whilst singing and rapping over the tunes and performing his classics. It’s more than just him and a microphone on stage, we’re getting a show. It’s going to be epic. What has the response been like in the town? Huge! Everyone always looks forward to this event, so much so, I get people asking me what the line up is from the start of the year. It’s the last real blow out before we settle down for Christmas so the hype is always on a level.
Very proud. It’s our third year running now and to be able to curate massive line ups with names that would never normally visit Blackpool is an amazing feeling… a real treat just before Christmas for everyone to look forward to.

Boxing Day sees you remain in the North West for Sanction at the Albert Hall alongside some of the real heroes of bass and house music at the moment. From all your travels how does Manchester rank as a city to perform in? Manchester is a bit of a home-coming for me as I lived here for two years and it’s my favourite city. It’s going to be nice to play Blackpool and Manchester in the space of a week around the Christmas period. The Albert Hall is a massive venue too where I’ve had the pleasure of playing once before so I can’t wait to get back. The line up is huge, the venue is monstrous and it’s on one of the biggest party nights of the year in my favourite city. What’s not to look forward to? Read the full interview at skiddle.com/news

hotels and restaurants The festive period isn’t just about going out on the lash; you need a place to stay and refuel to power it all. Here at Skiddle we don’t just enable the former, we give you plenty of beds and grub as well through our expansive hotels and restaurant service, with an abundance in close proximity to the events you’ll be spending that hard-earned Christmas money on.
Need a place close to the Hogmanay action in Edinburgh or the fireworks in London? Maybe somewhere to house your crew after the NYE shenanigans (and provide rest in between carrying on again the day after)? Better yet a hotel that is the event you’re after. We’ve got it all lined up, as well as everything from luxurious Lebanese cuisine to quick and easy soul food in our restaurants section. We’re pretty much your one stop shop for the party. skiddle.com/hotels

NYE is the biggest party of the year, so you best make sure you plan it properly. We caught up with DJing legend Judge Jules to talk about the some of the pitfalls to avoid as the new year comes in; make sure you don’t get it wrong this year.
“

JUDGE JULES, CAN YOU PLEASE STOP TALKING. THIS IS SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE!
I’ve played many, many New Year’s Eve parties over the years, and there are certainly plenty of minor incidents and anecdotes that I could point to, but none stand out on such a grand scale as much as the Millennium NYE. The year 2000 was a huge date in every clubber’s diary, but it was a result hugely inflated in cost. However, that wasn’t the problem in Sheffield, where I played at Don Valley Athletics Stadium. It was a sold out 25,000 person event inside a big top-style tent erected in the middle of the field. An outdoor location was an unusual venue to host a New Year’s Eve considering the time of year and the temperature, but the crowds were out in force. Everything seemed to be going well until mid-way through the night, presumably once the alcohol or other substances had taken hold, when somebody decided to climb to the top of the 20 metre main vertical pillar that was keeping up the tent.
“
Judge Jules
What was meant to be a great night suddenly turned into a bit of a nightmare. The safety of an inebriated reveller at the top of this pole was obviously a big concern for all involved, and particularly South Yorkshire Police who shut the music down. Not unsurprisingly, the crowd began to boo, and rather than welcoming in the New Year, we were facing the possibility of finishing early. I made my way from the DJ booth to one of the sound pits at the other side of the venue, found a radio mic and began geeing up the crowd and encouraging them to persuade this person down from the pole – a responsible act, or so I thought. It was then that I heard a second mic over the PA, this time directed at me: “JUDGE JULES, CAN YOU PLEASE STOP TALKING. THIS IS SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE!”. It turns out that perhaps I’m not all that well trained to deal with emergency situations. I shut up and eventually, after further persuasion from the police, the person climbed down and the party was allowed to continue. I heard that one of the other DJs punched him for ruining such a significant gig. Even to this day I meet people who attended that night and remember the whole situation.
