Every ski in the 2011/12 K2 collection combines tried and true construction with a host of innovative features designed to maximize performance in any snow condition. Features like BASELINE® profiles have redefined how we look at ski construction. Yet many of the successful components responsible for the lively and playful feel of a K2 remain at the ‘core’ of every ski we make.

We use a variety of woods in our cores to achieve the energy, rebound, and life you come to expect from a K2 ski. Fir and aspen, both solid and dense woods, are known for their inherent strength and durability. Paulownia is an ecofriendly, fast-growing renewable wood that is incredibly strong and lightweight. A softer wood, bamboo is recognized for being forgiving and lightweight.

Triaxial braiding consists of braiding fiberglass around a wood core to provide torsional rigidity for added control. Developed in 1988 by K2 engineers, the patented triaxial braid interlocks strands of fiberglass around a milled wood core. Triaxially braided skis are incredibly energetic and responsive, while maintaining a level of ease in both expert and entry level skis.

Built with two sheets of lightweight Titanal running the length of the ski, metal-laminate skis are the highest performing and most complex construction available from K2. Built from the base up, a metal laminate construction consists of alternating layers of fiberglass and Titanal above and below the wood core. Metallaminates provide dampened, accurate, unshakable performance ideal for expert-level skiers.

Durable and lightweight “cap” skis are built by a sophisticated molding process that envelopes the core and internal materials with the top layer of the ski. Used throughout our ski line, cap constructions can be assembled with a variety of different cores. These variations, such as glass and/or metal materials, are the determining factors of the skis’ performance.

Unlike cap construction, the contents of a sidewall-constructed ski are sealed and protected by vertical material on the edges of the ski. Extra sidewall material is placed directly above the edge of the ski for additional strength and support. Due to the vertical nature of the construction process, sidewall construction provides extremely high transmission of power and pop.

Progressive sidecut is a combination of two different radii, or sidecuts, that enhance the versatility of wider-waist skis. Standard sidecut theory is based on using a single radius. This works well on narrower skis, but becomes overpowering on wider skis, especially in variable conditions. The use of progressive sidecut on wider-waist skis guarantees improved turn initiation and hardsnow performance.

All of our women’s skis use a combination of aspen, paulownia, and bamboo in a unique core known as BioFlex, a process where a dense aspen core underfoot is fused with lightweight paulownia at the tip and tail to reduce swing-weight. With the Alliance’s involvement, K2 developed this technology specifically for women: lightweight and easy to maneuver, yet sturdy and high-performance.

K2 women’s metal laminate skis are built with a thinner strip of titanal than men’s skis. Proportional to lighter weight women skiers, the thinner layer offers overall weight reduction while still providing expert-level skiers the benefits of performance and dampening, consistent with metal laminate construction.

Our women’s skis are built with the sidecut shifted two centimeters forward relative to that of a men’s ski. This accommodates the anatomical fact that the center of mass for a woman is generally much lower than that of a man. Shifting the sidecut forward places the skiers center of mass in an optimum position over the ski for more control and easier turn initiation.

Ski is targeted for specific ability levels and terrain found at any resort, we have a global test and development team of 5 skiers from all parts of the globe. Each member brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from coaching, teaching and racing backgrounds to ensure we have the most versatile line of resortfocused skis.

Unlike other categories in the K2 line, our twin tips are designed to perform both forward and switch. The demand for products that perform increasingly well in both directions is now the norm. K2 has exceeded that challenge by developing unique radius and taper angles to maximize the skis’ bi-directional performance.

Some select Factory Team skis come with built in inserts. These allow for super fast mounting of the K2/Marker Griffon and new Squire SchizoFrantic binding system without drilling. The increased surface area of the insert rings provide greater resistance to pullout than standard binding screws. The low stand height and weight of the Squire and Griffon Schizo track and cable system makes it ideal for park, backcountry or the entire mountain. TAPER: Moderately wider tip than tail maximizes the ski’s performance in the forward direction. This means the ski makes a slightly different arc when skiing switch.

BI-DIRECTIONAL

TAPER: The tip is still wider but closer in width to the tail. This lets the ski perform exceptionally well while skiing in the forward direction, but the taper enables the skier to have similar switch arcs for better and more consistent switch riding.

SYMMETRICAL TAPER: A symmetrical ski has a tip width that is identical to it’s tail width. This gives equivilent arcs forward and switch. To maximize performance, the mounting location is in the absolute center of the ski.

Factory Team 39 This Twin Tip specific construction increases the durability of sidewall skis. A traditional sidewall construction produces a 90 degree angle where the top material and sidewall meet. The Twin Tech construction actually rolls the top material into the sidewall reducing the angle that is prone to abuse. Factory Team skis use thick, durable 3.5mm steel edges. They are far more resistant to cracking for a more durable, longer lasting ski. This horizontal sidewall construction sandwiches a urethane layer in between ABS for shock ABSorption, lessening the impact of harsh landings to the rider. Urethane is used under foot to maximize the dampening but ABS is used toward the tip and tail to maximize performance and edge control. Featured on the new Recoil and the Miss

Rescue Shovel / Rescue Shovel Plus You’ll probably use your shovel most for digging snow pits, building tent platforms or even digging out your car. And most shovels will do an adequate job for these tasks. Unfortunately, because avalanche debris sets up so hard, a frighteningly large number of shovels fail when called upon for their most critical function of excavating a buried friend. This is why our shovels are designed for durability and utility. The K2 Rescue Shovel can also construct an emergency sled, build a dead man anchor, or provide a flat platform for your stove.

Shorter or flexible probes are adequate for collecting snow-pit data and identifying crevasses, and we hope that’s the only time you ever need your probe. But it’s the things you don’t expect from poles that make K2 LockJaw poles uniquely valuable. They provide important information about terrain and snowpack to help you assess avalanche hazard. The inclinometer provides insight about the most critical component of terrain: steepness. And by using the Snow Depth Ruler to measure ski or boot penetration, you can gain clues about the density of the surface snow and how much is available for wind transport. Probing with the handle can also reveal information about the depth, thickness and hardness of various layers. All this data helps you assess whether or not it is safe to ski a particular slope.

TRIAX Carbon Technology Developed exclusively by K2, Triax Technology is the controlled process of winding 100% carbon unidirectional fibers at a 60 degree angle around the outside of the shaft. The external TRIAX fibers reinforce and control the uni-directional fibers of the pole, to create a more durable/Stiff shaft. New for this year, the Carbon/carbon adjustable pole is a lightweight, high-performance pole that features a bubble vial inclinometer to gauge slope angle, a snow depth ruler to measure various layers in the snowpack, and back-up probe. Like the name suggests, the 3-Piece features a periscoping 3-piece shaft (16mm/14mm/12mm) made from durable and stiff 7075 Aluminum. The LockJaw clamp is adjustable from 95-135cm and features a Bubble inclinometer and Snow depth meter. The Ergo sewn strap system keeps you comfortable and the powder baskets are easy to remove and pack thanks to a new thread system.

The Alu/Alu model boasts the largest adjustment range of all our two-piece poles and utilizes lightweight, stiff 7075 alloy for a bomber backcountry pole. The patent-pending LockJaw adjustment system allows for quick adjustments while you are making your way through the backcountry. Use both poles together to measure the slope angle with the built-in inclinometer, and a single pole to measure snow depth quickly and easily.

The BackSide Carbon is an ultra light weight, fixed length pole with plenty of backcountry features built in. The new 100% carbon TRIAX shaft with smaller 14mm diameter keeps this pole super light. 2011 2012 Rental Series 75D Top Material Thicker and More Durable Top-Sheet The top material on all of our rental skis is made with a 75D top material designed specifically to withstand cuts and scrapes. This is a thicker top material than production models for added protection in our rental skis. Rental Edge Thicker Edges for Longer Ski Life Our rental skis come with 30% wider edges. The thickened edges make the skis more durable to abuse and enable the skis to be turned more often than our production models for a longer ski life. Tip Protector More Durability Where its Needed Most. All rental models come equipped with a tip protector. The addition of the tip protector keeps the ski tip looking great and avoiding chunking or slicing into the top material in this damage prone area. The tip protector also acts as a bumper to ensure the tip stays protected if the ski strikes anything head-on. Rental Base Material Thicker and Super Durable The rental models come with a thicker base material that enables more regular tuning and will be less likely to puncture. A thicker base means more protection and a longer life. Built-in bar CODE – Ease of Tracking. Keep track of your inventory and keep the rental shop running smoothly with easy check in and check out using our built-in bar codes.
