H OW I G OT MY NAME BAC K By Rebecca Bender

P

oca” a girl’s voice asked on the other end of the phone. I knew who it was even though we hadn’t spoken in years. My eyes filled with tears. “Boo?” We laughed and cried for a few minutes shocked that we had found one another again. Our pimp forced us into prostitution years ago. Now both escaped and restored, we had a bond like no other. The nights helping each other get out of situations where tricks would try to hurt us and take their money back only brought us closer. The nights after our pimp would beat one of us and the other would sneak in with ice and a kind word knowing she’d receive the same treatment if caught- reminded us how human we were. Those were the incidents that no one else could understand or even fathom. But she got it, she understood me and what I had been through and I her. Like any form of slavery, our “master” gave us new names in the game... the life...in our modernized captivity. I was Poca, short for Pocahontas because of my olive complexion and long dark brown hair. She was Boo, sometimes Bookie. When he gave our fake names nicknames, we knew he was in a good mood. I hadn’t been called by my real name in years. To tricks I used the name on my ad online and to my pimp I was given a name, stripped of my identity, of any normalcy in my life.

The announcer moved around the room, explaining each mural painted by famous Italian artists, which hung on the walls above the statues. Starting with Columbus walking off the Mayflower and ending with the advent of aviation. Then, he moved to point out the mural of Pocahontas. wearing a white dress and was kneeling in front of a priest getting baptized. “She was given the Christian name Rebecca,” he proclaimed loudly. I wept then and there in the middle of the room. People looked at me and I didn’t care... they didn’t know that my old name was Poca. They didn’t know that for years I had been beaten by my trafficker and stripped of my identity as a person. He renamed me, he owned me. Now, remembering those first few months of calling myself by my real name, it reminded me of being baptized into my new life: my walk with Jesus. I was in awe of God’s hand upon my life, even through it all, He knew. He knew I would come out triumphantly. I was in awe of how it all came together in the end... the old and the new, the transformation for Pocahontas and for me, both of us now Rebecca.

Five years later, recovered and restored, taken right back to Jesus like the prodigal son... I was called by my real name: Rebecca. At first it was weird hearing it and even took me a couple months to get use to introducing myself by my God given name. On my last day in Washington DC I toured the congress floor. I was inspired by the opportunity to be there and listened intently as the announcer took us through the history of presidents. I thought of course, of all the men and women who helped change laws and get our country to where it is today. Two statues per state were admitted into the main room and lined the outside of the gigantic space. They said that the statue of liberty could fit inside and there would still be thirty feet.

Nearly 60% of our bodies are made up of water. Drinking plenty of water every day is important to replenish what our muscles lose when we sweat. Allowing our bodies to become dehydrated can lead to fatigue, headaches and the possibility of more serious symptoms. The benefits that getting plenty of water has on our daily health are numerous, some of them may even surprise you. >> Water helps maintain the body’s fluid balance, which helps regulate body temperature. >> Water helps promote healthy digestion and absorption of food energies and nutrients. >> Getting plenty of water, especially right before a meal, helps you feel full. This encourages the consumption of fewer calories, aiding in weight management. >> Water also aids in circulation and the transportation of nutrients throughout the body.

We all know that drinking water is healthy, but sometimes getting enough water isn’t as easy as it seems. There are so many tastier, sugar-filed options available when we are thirsty. Adding a mixture of fruits, vegetables and herbs is a simple way to spice up the blandness of regular water as well as infusing it with several vitamins and minerals, giving every glass an extra boost of healthy goodness.

or our movement towards reaching success. Our brain’s sole purpose is to keep us alive. Surely the way others see us can be helpful to us as well. We sometimes present a part of ourselves to the world that we may be unaware of. It’s good and helpful to take a moment and reflect back on whether there is anything we can learn from what others communicate to us about ourselves, allowing us the opportunity to make a few communication adjustments when necessary. We must keep the reflections of others in perspective, however. It is important to recognize that when others reflect their perceptions back to us, what we receive is not exactly a reflection of us. Rather we see a muddled combination of several factors; their interpretation of us, how they feel about themselves, and what triggers from their own past have been sparked.

Our constant awareness of our past is natural, normal and even healthy when it serves to help us learn from mistakes and protect us against any repeats. The danger of our past reflection occurs when we further ingrain this focus on the negative by rehearsing our mistakes or disappointments in our minds over and over and over again. When we do this we strengthen the neuronic connections in our brains that make up those negative, sad, or fearful memories. Given how our brains are wired, the reflection we get back from our subconscious mind is negatively slanted. This slant is meant to protect us, but it often confuses and throws us off. Do you have inferior feelings about yourself? Do you believe that you are not worthy of your

Here’s one simple way to start to retrain the reflection that you receive from your subconscious mind. Right now – take a relaxing breath and then list three words that describe the person you truly want to be. Those three words represent who you are deep in your core. Write down those words and post them everywhere. You can even set an alarm on your smart phone to show you these words at various times throughout the day. As you repeat these words and focus on them instead of the past memories and inadequate feelings, you’ll grow stronger, you’ll feel more uplifted, and you’ll begin to look towards the future with more excitement and more hope.

- HER STORY -

REBECCA BENDER My Road to Redemption

Rebecca Bender is an award winning, internationally recognized speaker, author and leader in the movement to eradicate modern day slavery, focused on changing the mindset of our culture. She is the founder of Rebecca Bender Ministries, which “exists to raise awareness and deliver solutions to the growing epidemic of sex trafficking in the United States and beyond”. Finishing her master’s degree in Christian Thought, Rebecca is now a licensed Minister and mother of four children. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and their family. She received the Unlikely Hero Award in 2013 for her advocacy work with both domestic and international victims of human trafficking and the 2014 Female Overcomer Award. “As a survivor of sex trafficking in America, I can’t begin to tell you how often victims are misidentified. We are not in a third world country, so trafficking is going to look very different today in our modern, developed society. Misidentification and learning the signs are crucial to help victims get out of sexual exploitation. Because I was never handcuffed to a bed like the media portrays, I though I must not be being trafficked. I didnt fit into the stereotypical box all of us in our culture believes. I was unaware what a coercive tactic was when the man I thought was my boyfriend began his manipulation. Because of this misidentification, I never asked for help, law enforcement never noticed and my family friends believed the same lies I regurgitated to them. Many points of interception could have taken place but went un-noticed.” In this incredible article, Rebecca shares her testimony of redemption, escaping a life of sex trafficking and going on to become a huge force of change and an encouragement to hundreds of victims. She provides a relevant perspective of someone who has been there and shares her heart as she fights to offer help and hope to others.

“It took me several years to even identify that I was a victim of human trafficking. I thought, ‘I’m a prostitute, and my boyfriend is very abusive.’ I believed that for years.”

- HER STORY -

“It was awe-inspiring to begin learning about myself again, the new me – the me I was meant to be all along.” I was born and raised in a small lumber community in Oregon. My middle class upbringing looked like most American children’s at the time; parents divorced, dad drank a lot, mom worked hard as a single parent. I was a “latch-key” kid who, by high school, felt unimportant to anyone. I was on the honor roll, played varsity sports and was accepted into University. It was because of this outward facade or normalcy and balance, that I was never realized as an “at risk” teen and I began to slip slowly under the radar as I drifted into a lostness that no one detected. I longed to be noticed and to be special to someone. As I continued spiraling, a trafficker disguised as a romantic, lurred me away with his fraudulent promises of belonging and a future life together. His plans for me were not a life of love and having someone to care for me. Instead, he seperated me from my family and friends and then began beating me, threatening me and forcing me into prostitution. After nearly six years of being forced into a life that I seemed to have no hope of redemption from in Las Vegas, the FBI raided the home I was in, allowing me and three additional women, an eventual avenue for freedom. Finding normalcy again and healing from the hurts I suffered over those six years inflicted by both buyers and by my trafficker, was a long process but I was determined to give my “recovery” as much time as I had given the man who I thought loved me. I found solace in a faith based, residential facility where I began feeling a heavy call upon my life towards helping others heal. I completed the program, stayed on as a Head Staff (assistant director) and enrolled in biblical study classes to further my education. I was eventually led to London where I worked with a non-profit that helped women who were exiting prostitution. I became their official spokeswoman, debating against dominatrix publicly. I also began mid-week preachings. These two minitries gave me a sense

of direction and I knew I was destined to be a voice for the voiceless; a herald to the nations. Something inside me still yearned for that family that I never had; the same yearning that my exploiter used to maintain his grasp. After returning to the U.S. I met an incredible man who fully supported my testimony, my passion and my calling. He closed the gap and filled that yearning of needing to be loved fully by another person. We married and added three babies, in addition to my daughter that I had prior to our marriage, to our family together. It was awe-inspiring to begin learning about myself again, the new me – the me I was meant to be all along. I discovered that I love to craft and I make special themed birthday parties for my children every year. I love to sew and can recreate any item I see for sale in a store. As a result, half of my bedroom is always cluttered with crafting and sewing supplies. Each person in my family can expect a handmade item from me for Christmas each year. I have discovered that I am an extrovert and I am re-energized when I am around others This is something I never knew about myself because I had never been given the opportunity to explore who I was six years into adulthood. As I continued to share my journey of redemption publicly, between diapers, school runs, soccer practice and potty training, I also wrote a lot and published my first book: Roadmap to Redemption, a faith based workbook for survivors of sex trafficking. I began mentoring girls in various cities. As my book gained attention, I became a sought after trainer and speaker at various conferences. I knew I had been called to be the voice for those who couldn’t speak out for themselves, but this was far beyond what I would have ever dreamed I would accomplish with my life. My speaking expanded beyond my story and I began being invited to preach on Sunday mornings

ing services at various churches. This was a true honor for me to see stigmas on women preachers broken in the church! I will never be ashamed of what God has brought me out of. I’m thankful for a sound mind that allows me to be able to take my past, and in hindsight, identify red flags, and coercive tactics that were employed by my traffickers. Without my past, I would not be able to train Attorney Generals, FBI, Law Enforcement, Community Advocates, Medical Professionals and Faith based communities on how to help others in the same situation. Without those experiences, I would not be able to relate with the women I mentor and encourage daily as a ministry of my own non-profit: Rebecca Bender Ministries, where we believe in changing the culture both surrounding human trafficking and issues facing the church today. I was recently accepted into Bethel University where I will finish my Master’s in Christian Thought. I am now an official licensed minister and I have also began training and consulting on areas surrounding human trafficking, that are beyond me showing up and sharing my story. While that is important and great for awareness, it feels good to be seen, recognized and known for my professionalism beyond what happened to me years ago. I was extremely honored to receive the “Unlikely Heroes” award for my advocacy work in human trafficking in 2013 and the Female Overcomer Award in 2014. I got teary eyed walking the Red Carpet in Hollywood, thinking back to 12 years prior, when I was walking the streets of Las Vegas.

My life has changed so much and I have come so much farther than I ever knew was possible. I never would have imagined that there was such an incredible future out there for me far beyond the pain of my past. I have several new projects in the works that I am excited about; a second book, a DVD series, and more conferences and training sessions for those working with “victims.” My message in everything I do is clear: If we want to end human trafficking and if we want to make a difference, we must change the mindset of our culture. As I watch all of my children grow and I keep my family on the forefront of my heart, I also know that the talented girls and women I work with everyday have so much potential for their futures as they move beyond their own pasts. They all are future CEO’s and Founders of organizations; future Entrepreneurs and Teachers; Doctors and Lawyers; future Fashion Designers and Authors; future Evangelists and Missionaries. Some that want to go back into the movement to empower and equip other survivors exiting the life and some that want to be leaders in their communities, changing the mindset of the cultures they live in. I’m more than my story and so are they. I am a professional, a mother, a wife, an advocate an author, a friend, a speaker, a preacher and trainer. I am an Overcomer and the message I hope to impart is that we are all so much more than just survivors of our pasts.

In an interview with news chanel KTVB in Boise Idaho, Rebecca says that her trafficker used two common tactics to victimize her: fast tracking their relationship, then moving her away from her friends and family. He then used force, fraud, brainwashing and coercion to keep her in that life. She tried to escape numerous times, but he would find her, beat her, brand her and threaten her daughter. Rebecca was even sold multiple times to other traffickers.

there is someone (out there) who feels like she’s involved in sexual exploitation, whether that’s pornography, stripping, or prostitution... If your boyfriend is forcing you to do that. If you say, ‘No, I don’t feel like it,’ and he beats you, and says, ‘It’s not your choice.’ That is human trafficking. We want to help you reach those dreams and promises that he’s giving you, without him. You can do it on your own, and with the help of your family, friends, and community.”

“There were times I felt like there was no end. There was no way out. There were times I just wanted to die,” says Rebecca.

There is life and hope after being trafficked.

Rebecca makes the point that trafficking is advertised online, so it is happening everywhere and putting an end to it starts with changing perceptions. The key is to make sure that it is the traffickers who are being arrested and prosecuted and not the victums. The victims don’t need to be afraid of law enforcment or of testifying. They need to know that they have support and people who will have their backs no matter what they say or what they have been through. She also adds that It is important that more people are made aware of the realities of domestic trafficking because, as Bender points out, “No one looks for something that they don’t know exists.” And even a lot of victims don’t realize that they are being trafficked. Rebecca says, “It took me several years to even identify that I was a victim of human trafficking. I thought, ‘I’m a prostitute, and my boyfriend is very abusive.’ I believed that for years.” It is crucial that trafficking victims understand that there is life and hope after being trafficked. Rebecca is proof of that hope! “I’m really thankful to God for restoring me, and giving me a new heart and a new mind. For me, that’s where I have really found a lot of my healing. My local church, and a lot of counseling, and prayer have been important” says Rebecca. “If

- NATURAL LIVING WHY DETOX BATHS? Setting aside some time in your evening routine for a detox bath not only offers a luxurious and relaxing way to end your day but can pack a serious punch of health benefits as well, some experts even argue that taking regular detox baths is one of the most beneficial things a person can do to maintain overall health. Detox baths have been used through the ages by the Greeks, Romans, Japanese, those in India, and many other cultures for their incredible healing properties and health benefits. There is a reason why expensive spas give herbal baths. Such

American society has migrated away from the long luxurious tub soaks, opting instead for a quick scrub in the shower in order to save time in our busy schedules. This societal trend is hugely apparent for anyone who has been house hunting in the last decade. Having a soaking tub on your wish list for a new home can seriously narrow down your choices. In America bathing has become more of a relaxation technique than a health conscious detoxification practice. There are a growing number of bath stores where you can find shelves lined with bath products that are artificially scented to suit your tastes. Never mind that these products contain loads

SORE MSUCLES 1.5 Cups Epsom Salt (or 1/2 C. for every 50lbs) 6 drops Peppermint oil 6 drops Marjoram oil 6 drops Lemongrass oil 6 drops Cypress oil 4 drops Copaiba oil

> Soak until water becomes cool (about 45 minutes) > Take a quick shower before your bath, gently exfoliating your skin with a chemical free scrub. This cleanses your skin of dirt and dead cells allowing the bath ingredients to better rid your body of toxins and making it easier for your body to absorb the healing properties of the ingredients. Then just towel dry after your soak, allowing the oils to naturally moisterize your skin.

Enjoy this bath 2-4 times per week!

> This is a great time to deep condition your hair, coating it with Jojoba, Coconut or Grapeseed oil and tying it up as you soak. Wash your hair thuroughly with a chemical free shampoo after your soak. Your hair will feel amazing!

RELAX & UNWIND 1.5 Cups Epsom Salt (or 1/2 C. for every 50lbs) 6 drops Peppermint oil 6 drops Lavender oil 6 drops Bergamot oil 4 drops Frankincense oil

> Drink PLENTY of water during and after this bath. Add lemon to your water to give remaining toxins a mineral base to bind to, encouraging them to get flushed out through your urine. *Notes for Purge & Purify Bath:

> You will sweat quite a bit during this bath as your body is purged of toxins. You may not be able to handle soaking for 45 minutes, stay in until you become fairly uncomfortable. > You will want to shower after this bath using a chemical free body scrub and shampoo as your body and scalp will sweat off a good deal of toxins that you want to be sure to wash off of your skin. Use a chemical free moisterizer after your shower like coconut oil.

Enjoy this bath 2-6 times per week!

PURGE & PURIFY 1.5 Cups Epsom Salt (or 1/2 C. for every 50lbs) 6 drops Lemon oil 6 drops Lavender oil 6 drops Tea Tree oil 4 drops Frankincense oil 2 drops Ginger oil (1 tsp. pure Ginger) 2 drops Cinnamon oil (1 tsp. pure Cinnamon) 2 drops Clove oil (1 tsp. pure Clove) 1/2 tsp. pure Tumeric

NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL BY NAOMI MAUTZ Have you tried everything to get stronger, more healthy hair? Beauty store products usually do a great job for the first couple of weeks and then your hair begins to grow dull and brittle again. That is because beauty store products are FULL of chemicals and chemically based ingredients. All of those chemicals build up in your hair over time and, even worse, they absorb into your blood stream through your scalp! The solution is more simple than you think and most of the ingredients can probably already be found in your pantry! Take care of your hair naturally by going chemical free. There are a ton of home made all natural shampoo and conditioner recepies out there, all it takes is a computer or mobile device and an internet connection. So, you might be a little skeptical, don’t worry you are not alone! I was skeptical too. The ever gorwing trend of switching to all natural, well... everything had me rolling my eyes for a long time. It wasn’t until I started having serious skin breakouts (rashes, sores, itchiness and burning) that

The amount of carrier oil recommended in each recipe calls for the minimum dilution (50-50, or 1 part essential oils to 1 part carrier oil) Beyond the minimum dilution recommendations, you can always add extra carrier oil to stretch the essential oils further (more bang for your buck). When you’re new to essential oils, start “low and slow”. Use a little at a time, dilute well, see how your body reacts, then over time you can increase the amounts if necessary. Kids and babies weigh much less than adults, so they require fewer drops to be affected in the same way. Start with only a few drops of essential oils well diluted (1 drop of essential oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil is common for babies) and work up from there. Again, everyone is different and you know your child better than anyone, so use common sense and do what feels right. Feel free to halve or quarter the recipes if your essential oil collection is still small and you want to make a smaller batch. Listen to your body and use your own best judgement! -Elaina

A L E T T ER TO MY DAUG HT ERS A LIFETIME OF MOMENTS By Naomi Mautz

My beautiful girls, As I write this you are both sound asleep. The house is quiet and it is in these silent moments that everything sinks in. All of the blessings that I have been given, the life that I have lived so far and the adventures I have yet to take. Time goes by so quickly and each moment is but the blink of an eye. It is in the small moments that our lives are lived. It is those moments when the wind blows through our hair or the rain tickles our face. The moments when laughter bubbles from somewhere deep inside or when love makes our hearts flutter. These are the moments that make life precious, they are the moments that help us get through the hard parts, they give us the courage to make it through the scary parts and they make the devestating parts survivable. It is in these little moments that we learn true joy and experience hope and realize our dreams. I have so many moments with you girls, the moment I first knew you were growing inside of me, the moment I first felt the tiny flutter of your life in my womb. The moment I heard your first cry and the moment I first heald you against my breast and felt your warm breath against my skin. The moment you said your first word and the moment I first heard you giggle. The moment you took your first step and the thousands of moments you have thrown your arms around my neck. The moments you have cried into my chest and the moments you have fallen asleep in my arms. The moment you lost your first tooth and the moment when you decided to cut your own hair. The moment you first swam across the pool all by yourself and the moment you won your first race. The moments when we just sat together and talked about everything and the moments we didn’t talk at all, but just soaked in each other’s company. All of the moments when you wrapped your fingers around mine and the moments we snuggled under a blanket to watch a movie or read a book. The moments I sat in the bleachers and watched you score your first basket and all the moments I watched you twirl around in your ballet shoes. The moments I have picked out your voice in a crowded room and the moments of shared secrets we have whispered to each other. The moments we have danced and the moments we have played. The moments we have fought and forgiven and the moments we have laughed so hard our tummies hurt. The moments we have played with makeup and put on fashion shows. The moments we have stayed up way too late watching the stars and the moments we have lounged in bed in our pajamas all day drinking hot chocolate and eating pizza. And the moments like tonight, while you sleep and I stand in your door and watch you dream. These are the moments when time seems to stop and I have a chance to breath you in as I close my eyes and thank

God for all of the moments He has given me with you. These are the momenst when I remember how important my job as your mom is, that it is my responsibility to give you as many moments of joy and peace, moments of strength and hope, moments of dicipline and guidance, of unconditional love and acceptance, of healing and of protection and laughter and faith as I possibly can. The moments go by so quickly and the opportunity to shape those moments is fleeting. As I watch you sleep tonight, I pray that the moments I have given you have made you stronger and wiser and kinder and more loving. I pray that I have lived my moments in such a way as to lead you by example and to show you how to live in and hold onto the moments that matter and how to let go of the moments that do not. I hope I have taught you how to weather the moments of heartache and how to perservere through the moments of pain and how to gain wisdom in the moments of trial and how to overcome the moments when moving forward seems impossible. Because the hard moments are sometimes unavoidable and sometimes they are unfair but the good moments get us through and the good moments are worth the fight. I pray that every moment we still have together will be used wisely to build a solid foundation of purpose and love for you to stand on. I pray that one day as you look back at all of our moments together that the indescribable love that I feel for you and the enormous pride I have in you and the overwhelming joy you bring to my life and the indescribable beauty you posess will flood from those moments and rush over you. I pray that they will be a resounding and undeniable reminder of a lifetime of moments that I spent loving you more than you will ever know. Thank you for being a part of my happiest moments. I love you forever and always, Mom.

THE TOWE Are you in a healthy relationship? Sometimes it’s hard to know when you’re in the midst of all of the warm tinglies. Here are 4 signs that your relationship is headed in the right direction.

O

ne is the loneliest number.” That’s what the band Three Dog

Night says. I think we can all agree that not just being alone,

but being lonely, is one of the worst feelings. Nobody wants

to be alone. Have alone time? Sure. Feel alone in the world?

No. Human’s need companionship, care and love. Our desire for human interaction and the hope of finding love is what drives us all to look for, and often choose, a significant other. It’s not just one that is lonely though. “Two can be as bad as one; It’s the loneliest number since the number one.” (Same band, same song). I think they were on to something. Sure, nobody wants to be alone, but being in a relationship doesn’t guarantee the absence of loneliness and the presence of love. In fact, when it isn’t nurtured, a bad relationship can be worse than being alone. We know that all relationships require effort from both people. A relationship is hard work, but a healthy and happy relationship is worth every ounce of energy. So why aren’t all relationships successful if we know it just takes some elbow grease? Unfortunately, knowing a relationship takes work and actually putting forth the effort are two different things. All relationships are different so what’s required to make a relationship work isn’t written in a formula in some magical book. Despite the lack of a magical success formula, however, there are some basic factors that give a relationship a good chance at being healthy and happy. I’ve thought about my own relationship. I’ve written lists. I’ve read a million photo by Naomi Mautz

articles. And finally, I sat down and talked to my husband. Men and women are different. They think differently, act differently and have different needs. After much research and collaboration, I feel confident that these four factors serve as good indicators of a healthy relationship.

I recently sat down with Erin Funk, owner of Joyful Funk Home Decor. Wife and mother of two, Erin spent her first 10 years after college in the nursing field specializing, for most of that time, in high-risk obstetrics and labor and delivery. About a year ago she decided to focus on being a stay at home mom, taking advantage of the opportunity to be home with her young children. She also took this opportunity to pursue her passion of finding old furniture and giving it new life. Joyful Funk was born from her amazing talent to turn something old and ordinary into something new and extraordinary! Her shabby chic style restored furniture pieces are in high demand in the Denver area. I, myself, have long drooled over several of her finished pieces. So it was a huge honor to be able to talk with her a little bit about her life, her story and her unique brand.
