Genesis Revisited
By Skip Rowland
Acknowledgements Thank you, Nina! This one’s for you. Without your support, encouragement, and participation, this project would not have happened. Thanks to Gordon MacGregor for getting me involved in SoFoBoMo (Solo Photo Book Month). It is still, as he put it, a “sweet kick-in-the-pants” project that encourages photographers to create books, rather than shooting images that do little more than languish in digital archives. This is my third year of participation and I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever picked up a camera and wished they could make a book. Thanks to Mom & Dad for my first camera and to Bob Brown, Dan Beatty, and James Wallace, for giving me the opportunity and guidance to prove I can do this. I shoot with Canon professional gear, use Think Tank gear for transportation and walking about, use Adobe Lightroom and PhotoShop for processing and archive management, and use fotofusion and Adobe InDesign for layout and publishing. All images in this collection were captured on Sunday evening, July 3, 2011 with a Canon Mark IIn through a 70-200mm L IS lens. I shot handheld - no tripod, no monopod.
Forward Talk about karma. Or stars aligning. Or serendipity. Call it whatever you like. The bottom line is this: July 4 fell on a Monday (not only making for a long weekend, but also allowing a calendar opening for a Sunday night event), the Richmond Flying Squirrels were out of town on Sunday (meaning there would be no fireworks at the Diamond Sunday evening), and Grucci (arguably the world’s best fireworks company) has a facility here in Virginia. Seizing the opportunity, the City of Richmond and Venture Richmond partnered to produce the first RVA Fireworks on the James. It was an overwhelming success! Well over 20,000 patriots came downtown for the event. Most went down to Browns Island. The rest ringed the hills of Richmond, setting up their bag chairs and blankets on Oregon Hill, at the War Memorial, in Manchester, in Church Hill, and on rooftops all around to take in the 360º show. What we saw was simply the best fireworks display I’ve ever seen. I hope the images that follow will amaze you as they did Nina and me. When she asked me if I expected them to turn out like this, I told her I wasn’t sure, but while I was shooting, I was pretty excited that something cool was happening. It wasn’t until I started going through them at home that I fully realized the magic I had captured. When I look through this collection, I see so many, many different things. I see everything from astral spectacles to microscopic wonders to cosmic paintings to cartoons. I see life. I see new beginnings. I see a hope not fade away. And I see that no matter what you look at, there’s always something new to see. Please, enjoy this collection, and may you also see something that you’ve never seen before.
