The April 2014 Stir It Up Issue

o rd in a ry.

Everywhere you turn this month, nature is urging you to stir things up. Swim against the tide: Teach your child cursive writing. Clean house: Vote progressive women into office. Save a species: Plant milkweed for the sake of monarchs. Ignore outcomes:

Spend a day watching clouds instead of working the Cloud. Try a new selfie: Write an alphabetical autobiography in 26 days—the A to Z of you. Be an April fool: Sign up for online dating. Rage against the machine: Risk arrest for a cause you believe in. Bust a rut: Walk 30 minutes every day for 30 days. Challenge the neighborhood norm: Paint your front door a shocking color. Change the paradigm: Think “It’s exciting!” instead of “It’s scary.” Choose enthusiasm: Tell your adult ego to get out of your way. After all, it’s the first spring of the rest of your life. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Mary Richardson

“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.” Gerard Way

Single in the City? Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a night on the town, early Saturday night Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try--Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight and I haven’t spent much time with them.”

It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She pours herself a glass of wine and wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.

Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hayes of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way to for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect, and form REAL relationships.

That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one the area’s oldest and largest introduction service, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

Vixen Vodka is so smooth it’s virtually a sipping vodka and will never leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

Lust in liquid form,Vixen Vodka is a cocktail cart’s secret weapon. The smooth vodka is a perfect starting point for any drink, especially our new favorite, the Va Va Vixen—a light cocktail that can be made strong (like a woman!) and still not give you pucker-face. It paired nicely with our super-easy strawberry shells and both are quick enough to mix up so you can still catch the sunset on your porch. Want extra-sweet strawberries? Put in a little sweat equity and head to Boone Hall Farms to pick your own. (Packed schedule? We won’t tell if they come from Whole Foods though.) And don’t say we didn’t warn you—one drink is never enough for a true vixen.

St. Germain is produced with handpicked elderflower blossoms from the Alps in France.

1.5 oz Vixen Vodka 2 oz white cranberry and strawberry juice Splash of St. Germain Fresh lime

From the skirt! Office Test Kitchen

2 cups strawberries, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 2 packages of mini fillo shells 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese

These mini fillo shells have no trans fats and are only 30 calories for two!

Basil adds a nice garnish.

Combine strawberries, balsamic vinegar and sugar; set aside. Bake fillo shells for 3-5 minutes. Let cool slightly, then fill with strawberry mixture and sprinkle with goat cheese.

Clay Braswell got creative with community chatter. It was Clay’s creative heart that led him to combine technological talent with a classic concept: sharing is caring. Seeing the missing links between the general public’s garage cleanouts and needy nonprofits’ wish lists, Clay realized he was in a unique position.“The biggest challenge was that we as a society have all become desensitized to words like ‘poverty,’ ‘community change,’ or even ‘donate,’ so we had to explore a different approach.” And thus came Creative Chatter, a site that connects unwanted items from community members with nonprofit organizations that can make use of them. “Our algorithm makes the match—the items are not being stored in a warehouse; instead the items are meeting a real-time need.” Thanks to Clay, chatter is changing lives in Charleston and beyond. creativechatter.com What do you like about skirt! Magazine? “I like the quality of the ads in skirt!. I normally look through the magazine first to review the ads, and then I read the articles.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “I felt powerful while wearing a skirt—like I could bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan.”

Embrace the sweet change! Ditch the regular milk and drink up the almond milk. The liquid has been on the milk substitute list since the Middle Ages and is commonly accepted as part of the paleo diet. It’s dairy-free and full of vitamin E to slow signs of aging and flavonoids to decrease the risk of degenerative diseases. What you’ll gain? A pump of potassium. Creamier coffee. Seriously. Stir it in. Admiration. You’re SO alternative now. What you’ll leave behind. The cow. Cholesterol and saturated fats. Boredom. (Brands like Silk boast dark chocolate & vanilla flavors!) Lily Peterson makes nature shine—from vine to vase.

This early riser puts in her hours for the West Coast while some in the Pacific Time Zone may be sipping the last of their sauvignon blancs. As an archivist for Delectable, a wine app co-founded by a “dear friend,” Lily works on the tech side of the popular social network that shares drink choices and recommends new ones. Once the sun’s up and out though, she swaps laptop for pruning shears and gets to work with nature’s other bounty at the Flowershop at Mixson—open this month. Part studio space to work on projects and installations for clients, part retail space for locals’ floral fixes, Lily seeks to appeal to everyday clients using her signature aesthetic, with a heavy focus on texture—“most often with green and dry elements, then a touch of fresh cut florals. Florals shine when they have a simple, yet layered backdrop. There is drama in understatement.” Find her handiwork through flowershopchs.com.

McKenzie Eddy is in tune with the community.

Separating work from life was McKenzie’s go-to system, and life in New York City solidified that for a while—then helped her break the habit: “It was a cool way to look at the world for a while, but it became exhausting.” Though she’s in the midst of recording a new album, she’s also letting music guide her outside of the studio, too. “Music is something that fuels me as a human; it’s part of the backbone of King Dusko, and booking bands or playing in one, it’s all sort of the same deal for me. I don’t know one without the other.” Her King Street space, King Dusko, is a community catch-all for art and performances (plus beer and coffee), with McKenzie guiding others to hone and grow their talents. “It’s an experimental haven for honest art. I want people to know that they can come to me with their ideas and as long as I understand the concept, I will do everything I can to help make their vision happen.”
