T h e F W o r d M a n i f e st o : Remember that Fabulous was your factory setting. Life is too short for Fake bacon. UnFriend trends. Fix your own Flats. Stop calling yourself Fat! Laugh lines are Face jewelry. Don’t let your Fear have the Final word. Make the next President the Firstever lady. Expect Four-leaf clovers under your feet. When you fall, Fly again. Any excuse for a Fiesta. File grudges under Forgotten. Know when to go with the Flow and when to swim against the tide. Hit pause instead of Fast-Forwarding the day. Pick your Fight instead of picking a fight. Don’t forget to Floss. Make Friends with your inner Amazon. Don’t leave home without your Feminism and a red lipstick. May the Fierce be with you!

Single in Charleston? Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a Saturday night on the town, Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try – Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight, and I haven’t spent much time with them.” It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.

Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of CharlestonSinglesNetwork.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.

That’s why so many singles contact CharlestonSinglesNetwork.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Charleston and Hilton Head to Savannah, Jacksonville and beyond.

Both require skill, patience and the ability to meet someone’s needs in the exact moment they’re in. And, both provide me the opportunity to help others – including myself – become the moms we were always meant to be.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished; even more so of what you have accomplished. Every July, we’re heartened that we have so many male feminists reaching out to us to be included in our pages—see our “I’m a Feminist Because” profiles for the best of the best this month. We love reading the essays we get every month from women who are doing amazing things all over the world. We love the ones who lean in and the ones who don’t; the champions for women’s rights and the ones who live their lives as role models for the next generations— women who are reading skirt! now who weren’t born when the magazine was founded. Most of all, we love the community our little magazine has created. You know these women as well as we do—you are these women. We thank you for being vocal, independent, assertive, outraged, and tireless. Just when it seems like we haven’t come very far since women were granted the constitutional right to vote in About the Cover Artist 1920, we get an essay or a letter or a woman nominated Brian Andrew Jasinski is an for a profile that gets our attention and restores our illustrator/designer in Clevefaith in the power of many voices becoming one. Nate DaPore | Captain of Silicon Harbor

“I’m a feminist because my mom is more than my mom. She taught me that with a lot of hard work and perseverance, my dream of starting my own successful tech company and writing my first book can happen. It’s about living passionately and purposefully, and I have my mom to thank for that.” Nate’s grandmother, mother and sister instilled in him that you can be driven, tenacious and competitive and still have a soft side. The PeopleMatter team is 42% women, and three of those are right-hands on Nate’s senior management team. They are not only amazing business leaders and coaches, but also living examples of how to be great mothers, wives, sisters, friends and teammates. As President and CEO of PeopleMatter, Nate is passionate about building the best software and the idea that people really do matter. skirt!magazine julyw2014  51

“I’m a feminist because “It’s good business. Numerous studies show that companies that have women in leadership roles perform better, grow faster and return greater value to investors.” Grady’s mother set the bar for business, owning and operating a dancing school, while she danced nearly every day for 40 years. The Group Publisher at SC Biz News and lifetime surfer serves on the board of Center for Women to support its energy as a union-hall-type space for entrepreneurial talent.

Dave LeClair | Renaissance Man

“I’m a feminist because…I’m lucky enough to have come of age in the late 60s, when every kind of freedom was being brought forward. I had a wild grandma and strong female role models and I’m tuned in to the female viewpoint. I believe in equality and balance as a ‘masculinist,’ a feminist in a masculine body.” As a store planner for Permasteelisa, Dave works on Brooks Brothers stores all over the world—he stumbled into architecture and drafting in the 80s, which led to his current job working with design and build teams. But his day job is a small part of what makes this man: He’s a singer and songwriter, a massage therapist, a healer, workshop leader, individualist and (his word) “masculinist.” He’s spent 20 years studying shamanism, worked under a powerful Native American medicine woman for 15 years, and leads workshops at Bridge to Avalon (as well as bodywork) regularly (BridgetoAvalon.com). He moved to Charleston four years ago for love— in fact, by the time you read this, he just might have married his fiancée Barb on Folly Beach already: “We’re taking a week off end of June and plan on marrying on the beach on the first day the weather is nice.” skirt!magazine julyw2014  55

Kayla: Haley: Urgent announcement: Rumor has it that the new iPhone 6 is going to be released in September.

Facebook has redefined what it means to vent, thanks in large part to a status box that begs the question: “What’s on your mind?”. Good news: you don’t have to read those updates if you don’t want to. Just click the upside arrow on the right side of the unfavorable status and select “Unfollow _____.” Voila! Respite from the onslaught of negative energy these friends dish out, without having to unfriend anyone. There, aren’t you feeling zen already?
