SKISCHOOL ST. MORITZ As early as 1979, the chronicle for the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Ski School read that a ski instructor said: ‘If you wanted to tell the complete history of this ski school, there would be enough material to fill volumes.’ It goes without saying that, today, those volumes would be full to bursting with all the additional story-telling material we have now! What the „Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz” has created from its heritage as the first and oldest ski school in Switzerland, however, is not self-evident. 90 years on, the “Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz” is one of the largest companies in the Upper Engadine region. DIE LEGENDEN IN ROT Für Giovanni Testa war es wichtig, die Verständigung zwischen Skilehrern und Skischülern zu verbessern. So wurden die angehenden Skilehrer nicht nur auf den Brettern ausgebildet, sondern täglich auch in der Kommunikation. Am Abend hiess es für die Skilehrer der ersten Stunde: Fremdsprachen lernen. Hard work, great benefits! Widerstand gegen die St. Moritzer Technik und Durchbruch Die Geschichte der Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz handelt vom degradierten Skilehrer, der zum Pionier aufstieg. Wie alle grossen Visionäre hatte er gegen erbitterten Widerstand zu kämpfen. Der Erfolg seiner Leistungen dauert jedoch bis heute an und macht den Neid seiner Widersacher aus heutiger Sicht nachvollziehbar: Schliesslich sprechen wir vom Skifahren – dem Schweizer Nationalsport. Natürliches Skifahren führt zur Gründung der ersten Schweizer Skischule Die verschiedenen Meinungen über die die richtige Skitechnik führten zu Verwirrung auf dem St. Moritzer Hausberg, was dem Tourismus zu schaden drohte. So wurden der Kurund Verkehrsverein sowie der Skiclub Alpina aktiv und beschlossen die Gründung der ersten Schweizer Skischule. Den ambitionierten Auftrag fasste Giovanni Testa. Der Unterricht basierte auf demokratischen Grundsätzen. Gemeinsam und im kameradschaftlichen Austausch wurde ab dem Jahr 1929 eine neue Skitechnik entwickelt.

Der Prophet im eigenen Land Dies verhalf dem Wintersportplatz St. Moritz zum Erfolg und löste einen Hype aus. Die Technik von Giovanni Testa wurde jedoch von der Dachorganisation «Schweizerischer Interverband für Skilauf» bekämpft. Skilehrer erhielten damals nur eine Lizenz, wenn sie sich an die Interverband-Technik hielten – die anderen mussten auf den Brevetkurs verzichten und wurden sofort aus dem Verband ausgeschlossen. Der ultimative Beweis durch die Guardia Grischa 1936 gründete Testa eine eigene Gruppe von Skirennfahrern: Die Guardia Grischa. Sie bestand aus den besten Lehrern der Skischule St. Moritz. Spätestens an den Olympischen Winterspielen 1948 in St. Moritz erfüllten sie definitiv ihre Mission: Im zweiten Durchgang gewann Edy Reinalter als erster und bisher einziger Schweizer Slalomfahrer olympisches Gold. Damit war der Beweis erbracht: Die St. Moritzer Skifahrtechnik taugte nicht nur für den Hobbysportler, sondern ebnete gar den Weg zu Olympiagold. Und das bis heute auf internationaler Ebene.

THE RED LEGENDS For Giovanni Testa, it was essential to improve the understanding between ski instructors and pupils. So, prospective ski instructors were trained on a daily basis not only on ski but also in communication. For the first ski instructors, that meant evenings spent learning foreign languages. Hard work – great benefits! Resistance to the St. Moritz technique – and breakthrough The history of the Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz is all about the ski instructor who got demoted, then rose to become a pioneer. Like all great visionaries, he had to fight bitter resistance. However, the success of his achievements continues to this day and makes the envy of his adversaries understandable; we are, after all, talking about skiing – the Swiss national sport. Natural skiing led to the founding of the first Swiss ski school Differing opinions as to the right ski techniques led to confusion on St. Moritz’s local slopes, threatening to damage tourism in the region. As a result of this, the Spa and Tourist Association joined forces with the Skiclub Alpina and stepped in, opening the first Swiss ski school. The ambitious task summed up Giovanni Testa. The lessons were based on democratic principles, working together, and friendly exchange. The outcome was the development of a new ski technique.

A prophet in his own country This laid the groundwork for the success of St. Moritz as a winter sports location and triggered much hype. However, the technique developed by Giovanni Testa was opposed by the umbrella organisation ‘the Swiss national ski-association’. At that time, ski instructors only obtained a license if they adhered to the Interverband „the Swiss national ski-association“ technique – those who did not do so had to forgo the qualifying course and were immediately excluded from the association. The ultimate validation: The Guardia Grischa In 1936, Testa founded his own group of ski racers: the Guardia Grischa. It consisted of the best teachers from the Skischule St. Moritz. During the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, they finally fulfilled their mission; in the second round, Edy Reinalter became the first – and at that time only – Swiss slalom skier to win Olympic Gold. This proved that the St. Moritz ski technique was not just for amateur athletes, but even paved the way to Olympic Gold. On an international level, this is still true to this day.

Die natürliche Skitechnik der Skischule St. Moritz entsprach nicht der damaligen schweizerischen Einheitstechnik, und es entfachten sich jahrelange Streitereien mit der Schweizer Dachorganisation für Skitechnik. Um die Überlegenheit der St. Moritzer Technik zu beweisen, wurde im Jahre 1936 die Renngruppe «GUARDIA GRISCHA» gegründet – sämtliche Mitglieder waren Skilehrer der Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz und des Skiclubs Alpina. Von 1936 bis 1948 konnte die Gruppe an vielen nationalen und internationalen Rennen grosse Erfolge verbuchen. Die «GUARDIA GRISCHA» wurde im Skisport zum Inbegriff von Erfolg und Sieg. An den Schweizerischen Skirennen in Gstaad gewannen vier Teammitglieder alle Hauptdisziplinen. Dank ihres vertieften Könnens und der perfekten Skitechnik gewannen die Mitglieder der Renngruppe bis in die Nachkriegsjahre grosse Rennen und wurden als Trainer für ausländische Nationalmannschaften rekrutiert. Den krönenden Abschluss erreichte Edy Reinalter als jüngstes Mitglied der «GUARDIA GRISCHA» mit seinem Triumph im Spezialslalom anlässlich der Olympischen Winterspiele 1948. Die St. Moritzer Skitechnik konnte sich durchsetzen und bescherte nationalen und internationalen Eliteläufern auch in späteren Jahren grosse Erfolge.

Jubilee Sweater THE LEGEND THAT IS THE GUARDIA GRISCHA The natural ski technique of the Skischule St. Moritz did not correspond to the standard Swiss technique of the time, and years of quarrels followed with the Swiss umbrella organisation for ski technique. The racing group the Guardia Grischa was founded in 1936 to prove the superiority of the St. Moritz technique. All members were ski instructors of the Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz and the Skiclub Alpina. From 1936 to 1948, the group was successful at many national and international races, with the Guardia Grischa becoming the embodiment of success and victory in skiing. Four team members won in all the main disciplines at the Swiss Ski Race in Gstaad. Thanks to their in-depth knowledge and perfect ski technique, the members of the racing group won major races well into the post-war years and were recruited as trainers for foreign national teams. Edy Reinalter, as the youngest member of the Guardia Grischa, topped off the success with his triumph in the special slalom on the occasion of the Olympic Winter Games in 1948. The St. Moritz ski technique prevailed and brought great success to national and international elite skiers even in later years.

Many of us are familiar with the iconic image of the Guardia Grischa at Salastrains. Seven handsome, tanned ski instructors standing next to each other, all wearing their stretch trousers and distinctive sweater. The sweater is a symbol of the Guardia Grischa and of excellence in ski sports in general. To mark its 90th Anniversary, together with the sponsor Moncler, the Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz has produced an authentic replica of the legendary ski sweater. The sweater is only sold in a package – part of the proceeds will be donated to the Ski School for the Blind in St. Moritz.

May we introduce Boris – the new assistant at Skischule St. Moritz. Boris Skyshuskin is from Arkhangelsk, Russia. Hence, at the beginning, things felt rather strange for him. Boris supports our CEO in his daily work and as such has a direct insight into the varied everyday life of the largest and oldest Swiss ski school. For the 90th jubilee of the Ski School St. Moritz, a film was produced from the facebook episodes that were successfully broadcasted in the winter of 2018/2019, which throws an exclusive look behind the scenes of the company. The topics range from the season opening to snowboard lessons, from the Guardia Grischa to the Swiss Snow Happening, and from the Ski School for the Blind to the Jubilee Sweater. The film, which is approximately 75 minutes long, will be screened as part of film events during the 2019/2020 jubilee season and on the Swisscom TV channel of enjy.tv.

Digitalisierung ist in aller Munde und zum eigentlichen Schlagwort der Stunde geworden. Auch vor der Skischule macht diese nicht halt. Mit der Web-App «MySports» setzen wir sie zum grossen Vorteil unserer Gäste ein – wie wir meinen.

Everybody’s talking about digitalisation – definitely the buzzword of the hour. Skischule St. Moritz is no exception. With the web app ‘MySports’, we use digitalisation to maximise our service for our guests.

«MySports» ist eine webbasierte App vom Anbieter unseres Reservationssystems Waldhart. Bei der Reservation bekommen die Gäste und Schüler der Skischule St. Moritz automatisch einen Link zum Kundenportal und können direkt auf «MySports» zugreifen. Dies, ohne eine App herunterladen zu müssen – ein grosser Vorteil. Auf «MySports» sind alle Informationen zur getätigten Reservation verfügbar: der Skilehrer, Treffpunkte und Pistenpläne, Geschäftsbedingungen, Swiss Snow League, und, und, und … Die Kunden erhalten zudem die Möglichkeit, die Kurse zu bewerten und persönlich zu kommentieren. Die ersten Erfahrungen zeigen, dass dies rege benutzt wird und das Tool sehr gut von unseren Gästen angenommen wird. Die Feedbacks werden intern ausgewertet und helfen uns, Angebot und Ausbildung zu verbessern. In Zukunft soll auch die Zahlung und die direkte Kommunikation mit unserem Skilehrer-Tool über «MySports» möglich sein.

‘MySports’ is a web-based app, created by Waldhart, the provider of our booking system. Upon booking, guests and students of the Skischule St. Moritz automatically receive a link to the customer portal and can access ‘MySports’ directly without having to download an app – a significant advantage! All information about the booking is available on ‘MySports’: the ski instructor, meeting points, trail maps, terms and conditions, Swiss Snow League, etc... Customers also have the opportunity to rate and comment on the courses. Initial experiences show that the app is actively used and a very well accepted tool for our guests. All feedback received is evaluated internally and helps us to improve our range as well as the training. In the future, payment and direct communication with our ski instructors’ tool will be possible through ‘MySports’.

Die Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz möchte Menschen mit Sehbeeinträchtigung ein besonderes Skierlebnis bieten. Eine Schweizer Errungenschaft und ihre Geschichte. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Tessiner Gruppe für Blinde und Sehbehinderte begann die Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz 1981 mit der Ausbildung von Skilehrern für Blinde und Sehbeeinträchtigte. Die Schule war ein Novum in der Schweizer Wintersportszene, welches andere Skigebiete inspirierte nachzuziehen. Heute unterrichten rund 30 Blindenschneesportlehrer an der Skischule St. Moritz. Profitieren können von diesem visionären Angebot alle Altersgruppen. Instruktoren lernen blind So individuell die Schüler der Blindenskischule sind, so variantenreich ist die Ausbildung der Instruktoren. «Wir fahren selbst mit Simulationsbrillen oder blind, um auf alle Situationen vorbereitet zu sein», sagt Claudia Blaser, Verantwortliche der Skischule für Blinde und Sehbehinderte. Besonderer Schwerpunkt in der Ausbildung der Instruktoren ist die Sicherheit der Lernenden auf der Piste und die klaren Kommandos. Ebenfalls wird das Führen mit oder ohne Funkgerät geübt. Ski School for the Blind The sun shines, the snow glistens and yet, everything is grey. Just silhouettes. Blind skiing, unimaginable for many - for some a reality. The Ski School St. Moritz wants to offer people with visual impairment a special skiing experience. A Swiss achievement and its history. In cooperation with the Tessin Group for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Swiss Ski School St. Moritz in 1981 began with the training of ski instructors for the blind and visually impaired. The school was a novelty in the Swiss winter sports scene from which other ski resorts were inspired to follow suit. Today, some 30 blind snow sports instructors teach at the St. Moritz ski school. This visionary opportunity is open to all age groups. Instructors learn blindfolded As individual as the students of the ski school for the blind are, so varied is the training of the instructors. “We ski ourselves with simulation goggles or blindfolded to be prepared for any situation“, says Claudia Blaser who is in charge of the ski school for the blind and visually impaired. Particular emphasis in the training of instructors is in the safety of learners on the slopes and the clear commands given. Also training with and without radio communication is practised. The instructors have been enabling exploration of the Upper-Engadine ski resorts for the blind and visually impaired possible for the past 30 years. For a winter sports field for all.

Mount Buller – a family affair Australia and Switzerland – two countries which at first glance, don‘t seem to have very much in common. One must look further to find it. All the more astounding then when you find it in skiing. Or maybe not, because it only needs two factors to take into consideration. The people and the passion. The Grollo family in Australia is just as passionate about skiing as the Red Legends-family in St. Moritz. Mount Buller is a family business. The Grollo family comprises three generations of skiers: Diana and Rino, their four adult children and their partners, and nine grandchildren. The family has a strong connection to St. Moritz. They first visited St. Moritz in the summer of 1978 and absolutely fell in love with the Alps. They began skiing that year in Australia and returned to St. Moritz in winter 1983. The love affair with St. Moritz has now been going strong for 40 years, during which time the Grollo family shared many wonderful experiences, made some lifelong friends – and bought a few beautiful antiques along the way! «For 40 years we have loved St. Moritz, sharing many experiences, catching up with old friends as well as collecting antiques.» Mt Buller is situated 248 km north-east of Melbourne, nestled in the scenic Victorian High Country near Mansfield. It is Australia’s most accessible major Alpine resort. Buller Ski Lifts operates a diverse range of businesses and services including the lifting network, the Ski & Snowboard School, crèche, rental and retail stores, hotel and apartment accommodation, and on-mountain hospitality venues. Buller Ski Lifts employs approximately 800

personnel during the peak winter operations across all business areas including the Ski & Snowboard School, ski patrol, administration and marketing, mountain operations, guest services, and hospitality and maintenance. «Today, Mt Buller offers activities on 300ha of terrain, 22 lifts, the Ski & Snowboard School, hotel and apartment accommodation and employs approximately 800 personnel during the peak of winter season.» Over the past 30 years, Mt Buller Ski School has had St. Moritz Ski School instructors participate in an exchange programme. Approximately 320 instructors from around the world provide professional tuition in a range of lesson settings including “Discover” skiing and boarding for first-timers to familiarise themselves and learn to be safe on the snow; group lessons for skiers and boarders grouped into age ranges from children through to adults; and also private lessons on request tailored to guests’ needs.

The term ‘RED MORITZ’ is derived from a coupling of ‘The Red Legends’ with ‘St. Moritz’ – two defining elements of our ski school. The gastronomical concept originated from the imagination of the two Bernese Gastro-Profs Adrian Tschanz and Daniel Mani. The menu offers simple, tasty – and cheeky! – Alpine cuisine. Healthy, hearty, regional, and seasonal are all perfect descriptions of the dishes served there. Each day brings a new culinary surprise. The attractive pricing makes the uncomplicated restaurant with self-service and sun terrace a popular meeting place for winter sports enthusiasts, walkers, ski instructors, and snow kids. In the evening, the restaurant can be used for events, gatherings, and celebrations – seriously cool menu included :-).

JUBILÄUMSREZEPT

KURZ GEBRATENES KALBS-CARPACCIO MIT ROH MARINIERTEN PILZEN

8 Personen Zutaten 1 kg Kalbfleisch, runder Mocken, mindestens 15 Tage gelagert Salz Pfeffer aus der Mühle 2 dl Olivenöl 2 Zweige Rosmarin 1 Zweig Thymian 1 Zehe Knoblauch 250 g frische Pilze, z. B. Morcheln, Steinpilze oder Champignons einige Spritzer Sherryessig 1 grosser Stängel glatte Petersilie, in feine Streifen geschnitten Zubereitung Das Fleisch gut waschen, dressieren und trocken tupfen, grosszügig mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen und in etwas Olivenöl in einer heissen Pfanne anbraten. Das Fleisch auf jeder Seite für ca. 4 Minuten braten, sodass es eine schöne, goldbraune Kruste hat und dann auf einem Teller beiseite stellen. Rosmarin, Thymian und Knoblauch ganz fein hacken und das Fleisch darin wälzen, sodass es einen würzigen Kräutermantel erhält. Nun das Fleisch satt in Plastikfolie einwickeln und während ca. 2 Stunden ziehen lassen. Aus der Folie nehmen und mit einem scharfen Messer (nicht mit der Aufschnittmaschine, das kann jeder...) in hauchdünne Tranchen schneiden. Die Pilze gut waschen, rüsten und ebenfalls in hauchdünne Scheiben schneiden (hier kann auch ein Trüffelhobel benutzt werden), die Pilze über dem Fleisch verteilen, mit dem Olivenöl und dem Sherryessig marinieren und mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Zum Schluss mit Petersilie garnieren. Dieses Rezept ist glutenfrei, laktosefrei und kinderfreundlich.

Trainingsgemeinschaft Oberengadin Neben dem wettkampforientierten Training geniessen in der Trainingsgemeinschaft Oberengadin auch die Faszination Schneesport und die Kameradschaft einen grossen Stellenwert. Die Schweizer Skischule St. Moritz arbeitet schon seit vielen Jahren mit dem Skiclub Alpina zusammen. Die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit wurde weiter intensiviert, indem die Skischule St. Moritz seit der Saison 2018/19 ein Trainingsangebot für alle Skiclubs im Oberengadin und in den Südtälern zusammenstellt und anbietet. Ziel der Trainingsgemeinschaft ist es, die traditionellen Skiclubs in den Ortschaften zu stärken. Ab der Wintersaison 2019/2020 werden die jungen Athleten mit Moncler Skiund Rennanzügen eingekleidet.
