#2 Loire From lavish châteaux to the winding rivers, a wonderful region for all ages
WRITTEN BY GEORGE ABRAHAM, CYCLING EXPERT
T
his summer I travelled to the Loire with my eight family members that varied in age from one to 70. As a multi-generational holiday, our stay at Château de Candes as a single centre gave us fantastic flexibility. Some days were more energetic than others and there were plenty of rest spots along the cycle paths for a lunchtime picnic and a siesta by the river. The children THE TERRAIN IS enjoyed doing other activities too, P R E D O M I N A N T LY like canoeing along the Vienne river, F L A T, M E A N I N G T H A T swimming in the hotel’s pool and T H E M I L E S F LY B Y O N playing in the vast private garden. A BIKE AND MANY INTERESTING PLACES The terrain is predominantly flat, CAN BE EXPERIENCED meaning that the miles fly by on a ON EACH RIDE bike and many interesting places can be experienced on each ride. There is no shortage of things to see, with history and wine buffs keenly provided for. I enjoyed seeing the local camaraderie at the farmers market, and it was a pleasure to see all the locally grown vegetables on our plates in the evenings.
My favourite ride was the roundtrip between Montsoreau and Saumur along the excellently signposted Loire à Vélo route. A pretty easy route with a few short inclines, it includes riverside paths, passes old troglodyte dwellings and a stretch through hilltop vineyards. From a short ascent you are rewarded with stunning views of the Loire Valley below and Château de Saumur, which really encompasses the experience of cycling in this part of the world.

#3 Provence
Pedal along quiet roads, deep into a landscape of dazzling colour
WRITTEN BY HARVEY DOWNARD, HEAD OF CYCLING
I
’ve been fortunate enough to visit Provence regularly over the last few years and each time my affinity for the region grows stronger. There’s something about the landscape, the people and the warm Mediterranean weather that encourages a calmer, slower way of life upon you, which is exactly what I am looking for on holiday. As a racing cyclist, I find myself climbing onto a road bike whenever I visit. Provence is one of France’s cycling heartlands with plenty of breathtaking routes, my favourites are Mont Ventoux PROVENCE IS CRISS-CROSSED and Gorges de la Nesque. WITH QUIET ROADS THAT I’ve never been able to W E AV E T H R O U G H V I N E YA R D S , put into words how great F R A G R A N T L AV E N D E R F I E L D S it feels to reach the top of AND PRETTY VILLAGES such iconic climbs, nor to describe the overwhelming, primal enjoyment of picking up speed on the descent. Suffice to say, I strongly recommend any cyclist experiences it for themselves. It’s not just a region for lycra-clad types though. The predominantly rural nature means the region is criss-crossed by quiet roads that weave through verdant vineyards, past fragrant lavender fields and into pretty villages. These quiet roads and the ever-increasing number of cycle paths make it an ideal place for a more leisurely cycling tour. Having visited eight times in the last four years, I think it speaks volumes that, along with many of our clients, I am already planning my return in 2020.

#6 Asturias Welcome to the heart of Spanish authenticity
WRITTEN BY HARVEY DOWNARD, HEAD OF CYCLING

nknown by many, this northern region in Spain steals all the charm of a traditional coastal region without the crowds. Authentic fishing villages and humble tapas bars bring the otherwise green wilderness and dramatic coastline to life. We recommend learning a couple of basic Spanish phrases to win the hearts of the locals and earn yourself a welcoming grin. Dubbed as Green Spain, AUTHENTIC FISHING VILLAGES Asturias lives up to its AND HUMBLE TAPAS BARS billing as a spectacularly BRING THE OTHERWISE GREEN verdant stretch of Spain’s WILDERNESS AND DRAMATIC northern coastline. The COASTLINE TO LIFE landscape has similarities with other Atlantic regions such as Brittany, Cornwall and Ireland, with rugged coastal cliffs and countless hidden coves. Similarities end abruptly when moving inland, as peaks rise high above the sea, the most impressive of which form the Picos de Europa range, one of the most photogenic mountain ranges in the world. The cycling tends to follow the coast – normally from east to west – along the Camino de Santiago towards Santiago de Compostela. The coastal routes are easy going and take you through charming towns with abundant fresh seafood that are a delicious, if not a little decadent, mid-ride meal. Those looking for a more strenuous ride should turn inland to the spectacular mountain roads. Steep-sided river valleys and quiet, twisting roads take you between the rugged, medieval hamlets.

I loved the surprises along the way like cycling out of dense forests to be greeted with an ancient fortress or castle perched on a rock. Perfect with a SUNFLOWERS, GROVES bottle of Alentejo wine. OF PLUMP OLIVES AND SPECTACULAR VIEWS If you have time, I recommend ACROSS THE ATLANTIC spending a couple of days in Lisbon. The Portuguese city has fabulous architecture including the enormous Jerónimos Monastery in Belém and the dominant São Jorge Castle with panoramic views over Lisbon’s rooftops. I found the A L O N G Q U I E T, T A R M A C K E D beauty of Montenegro’s COASTAL PATHS WITH interior calming, and the STUNNING ASCENTS AND people both charming THRILLING DESCENTS and hospitable, especially when it came to their generous portions of home-cooked meals. There was an abundance of fresh fish, locally grown fruits and vegetables. While it may not rival France’s world-renowned appellations, there was a surprising deliciousness to Crmnica’s red Vranac wine produced in family-run wineries. Along the coast there are plenty of fascinating ancient castles, fortresses and ruins to explore that date back as far as the 5th century. The coastline is stunning, with plenty of secret coves and bays to cool off in the Adriatic – and the best bit is that they are virtually deserted!

#15 Saxony Spa towns, classic architecture and scenic cycling

I
am excited that we have added another tour in Saxony for 2020 as it’s such a scenic region to cycle. The cycle between Dresden and Bad Schandau is one of my favourites. The flat riverside cycle path from Dresden passes the KÜnigstein Fortress and Pillnitz Castle that showcase classic German castles. The pretty spa town is a great place to unwind at the end of your trip with a well-earned icecold German beer! Cycling along the Elbe river is almost like a postcard with fertile green hills either layered with vines or topped by an imposing castle. If you start in Prague, you will experience the two countries as you journey through the countryside of both, stopping for local specialities in charming restaurants. In Melnik and Litomerice take a tour of the underground wine cellars, followed by a tasting of the Czech wines. My highlight has to be the Saxon Switzerland National MY HIGHLIGHT HAS TO BE Park. The sandstone cliffs THE SAXON SWITZERLAND and riverside meadows are NATIONAL PARK. THE really beautiful. Offering SANDSTONE CLIFFS AND a peaceful contrast to RIVERSIDE MEADOWS ARE the lively city of Dresden, R E A L LY B E A U T I F U L cycling around the park is extremely calming with plenty of viewpoints and pretty bridges to stop at. Dresden is home to popular art galleries and plenty of Classical architecture. The Zwinger Palace and Semper Opera House are the most notable sights and well worth a visit.

World Bicycle Relief We have partnered with World Bicycle Relief to help provide bikes to farmers, entrepreneurs, healthcare workers and school children in developing countries. More than 400,000 specially designed and durable Buffalo bikes have already been delivered, which creates an efficient mode of transport in rural areas. World Bicycle Relief’s mission is to mobilise people through bicycles, and they hope to see a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education, healthcare and economic opportunity. We can't wait to help them.
MEET RAMADAHN Living in Western Kenya, Ramadahn Bakari is a community health worker. Before he had his Buffalo bicycle, he would walk 8km on foot to visit patients. Now, he can help more patients in less time, which has transformed the way he looks after his community. Ramadahn cares for 522 people across Kakamega County, with trips to patients’ homes now taking 10 minutes rather than an hour or more.
With every BSpoke booking, we will donate £5 per person to the charity on your behalf. To find out more about World Bicycle Relief, please visit www.bspoketours.com/ world-bicycle-relief
