❯❯ Jennifer Baker’s glass piece, “Storybook Stroll,” captures a quintessential Steamboat Springs view: sunlight filtering through an aspen grove. As such, it is ideally suited to be the cover art of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide.

“The inspiration for this piece comes from the richness of our surroundings,” Baker says. “When I’m hiking and soaking in the surroundings, I think there is always some anticipation of what lies ahead. I think it’s that appreciation, richness and grandeur that always bring a sense of space and place.”

Layering is a technique common to all of Baker’s pieces, and “Storybook Stroll” is no exception. Her artwork contains thousands upon thousands of ultra-thin sheets of glass, each with its own texture, from rough to powdery. Each of these layers requires time in the kiln, which means every piece is the result of a lengthy process.

Baker was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up immersed

in the arts. Her uncle, a landscape designer, sent her to art camps, where she was exposed to many types of craftsmanship, but everything changed when she discovered glass. From that point on, she says, she was obsessed. Baker describes herself as a tactile person, and the hands-on nature of her art is especially appealing to her.

This winter at Gallery 89, Baker unveils an art collaboration titled “Symbiosis II” with internationally renowned metal sculptor David Marshall. The show features pieces combining metal and glass, and marks the second time the two artists have collaborated, the first being “Symbiosis” in 2015. “We thought it was time for another body of work,” Baker says.
