Welcome to Steamboat Springs
Afteran epic winter, the snow is melting, the valley is green and the Yampa River is flowing. Welcome to summer in Steamboat Springs! If you’re a hiker, mountain biker, kayaker, fly fisher or someone who just wants to get away, the Yampa Valley offers much to do this season.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned visitor, we hope this issue of the Steamboat Springs Visitors’ Guide helps you learn more about our historic mountain community and the ways you can enjoy it.
One of the best ways to explore the Yampa Valley in the summer is to get outside. Not only is the weather beautiful, but the activities are abundant. Here you’ll find a large network of hiking and biking trails, river and reservoir access, and captivating views of wide-open spaces.
When you get hungry or thirsty after all the activity, it’s time to explore our diverse culinary offerings, which include everything from burger bars and breweries to fine-dining steakhouses and some of the best happy hours you can find anywhere.
You won’t see many big retailers here in Steamboat. Instead, visit our family-run businesses, stroll through the Farmers Market, or get to know your barista.
Steamboat is more than spectacular scenery and outdoor adventure. We take pride in our thriving arts and culture scene. As a certified Creative District, Steamboat is officially recognized as a hub for creativity.
Our Western roots run deep. From the Utes through the fur trappers, to our agricultural and ranching communities, our heritage is what defines us. You can learn all about our Western spirit by visiting one of our many galleries or museums.
As a community, we work to preserve the beauty of the Yampa Valley so it can be enjoyed for generations to come. When you’re out and about, please follow “Leave No Trace” principles, give wildlife their space, and embody the Western spirit of hospitality and kindness. After all, kindness floats the boat!
The Steamboat Springs Chamber is excited to welcome you to our home in the vibrant Yampa Valley. We hope you treasure your time here as much as we do.

A rodeo clown quickly distracts a bull from a fallen rider at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series.
Western heritage defines us in Northwest Colorado. It’s who we are. It’s what we do.
The Western way is about hard work, love of the land, devotion to family and friends, independence, determination, inventiveness and loyalty. You don’t have to don a cowboy hat to embody these ideals; they pervade the community.
Take a scenic drive north toward Steamboat Lake, west toward Hayden, south toward the Flat Tops or east over Rabbit Ears Pass. Any direction you go, you will be surrounded by agricultural land. For a special treat, make the drive in spring during calving season or at sunset in early fall, when six-foot round hay bales reflect the golden light over the newly harvested fields.
For a more intimate look, take a gravel bike ride. Although SBT GRVL, the most prestigious gravel event in the area, sells out within a day or two of its announcement, suggested gravel routes through the rural countryside can be found at www.steamboatchamber.com/activities/biking/gravel-biking/.
While Western hospitality is the stuff of legends, it’s best to stay on the other side of the fence, unless ranchers specifically invite you onto their land. Bulls can be bull-ish, farm equipment is dangerous, and sheep dogs can be deadly. Instead, visit one of the several local ranches that are specifically open to the public. One is Saddleback Ranch in west Routt County, a working cattle ranch run by a fourthgeneration Routt County family that was the setting for “Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules.” Rural ranch tours are also arranged periodically through the Northwest Colorado Cultural Heritage program. (www.nwcoloradoheritagetravel.org).
Horseback riding may be the best Western experience and opportunities abound for everyone from beginners and children to accomplished riders and arena riders. A visit to Del’s Triangle 3 may also afford riders the opportunity to meet Steamboat Olympian Ray Heid, whose family owns the ranch.
The biggest show of all, of course, is the weekly pro rodeo at Romick Rodeo Arena in downtown Steamboat. Not only do the events feature some of the top cowboys in the West, they also include kids’ events, beer and a delicious BBQ.
The most authentic Western experience may be the Routt County Fair in August in Hayden. This historical celebration features 4-H and FFA shows, a BBQ and livestock sale, demolition derby, bull riding, youth rodeo and rides.
Throughout the summer, barn dances, cattle/sheep dog trials and nature/bird tours at local ranches are likely to be scheduled. Visit the calendar of events at www.steamboatmagazine.com for more information.
To take home a memory of this summer’s Western experience, visit F.M. Light & Sons on Lincoln Avenue. More than likely, you’ve seen at least a few of the 200 yellow and black road signs touting this 118-year-old Western store, the first retail outlet in Steamboat. From a broad selection of cowboy hats and boots to belt buckles and jeans, F.M. Light outfits us all.
We’ve all got a little inner cowboy inside of us. Let it out of the chute in Steamboat Springs this summer.

Saddle bronco riding is a popular event at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series.
Under the Lights of the Steamboat Pro Rodeo
Don a cowboy hat, pull on your boots and round up your family for the Steamboat Pro Rodeo. At Brent Romick Rodeo Arena, you’ll find one of the most beloved and longestrunning Western traditions in Steamboat Springs, with roots tracing back more than 100 years.
The rodeo features the iconic and thrilling competitions of the Old West: bareback riding, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding and even a ram scramble for youngsters. Get there early to hear live music and grab a bite at the rodeo BBQ, or quench your thirst with a variety of beverage options. The rodeo is family-friendly, with
rodeo clowns and roping games that keep even the antsiest group of kiddos on the edge of their seats.
The Steamboat Pro Rodeo takes place on Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, two blocks from Main Street near the base of Howelsen Hill. Each rodeo lasts roughly two hours, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Park at the rodeo grounds, at the nearby Howelsen Hill Sports Complex, or take a short walk from downtown Steamboat to avoid post-rodeo traffic. And remember to bring an extra layer – once that hot sun sinks down behind the mountains, you’ll be glad you did.

Adventures in the Wild West
To return to Steamboat’s Western roots and explore the valley the way settlers first did, take a horseback ride through the sprawling Yampa Valley terrain.
Book your ride at Saddleback Ranch, which offers one- and two-hour rides for ages 6 and up. While the rides are mostly at a walking pace, it’s not necessarily nose to tail – the 8,300 acre ranch offers ample space to spread out and enjoy the authentic Western scenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife like elk, deer and birds that are prevalent in the area.
If you want to bring a carrot or apple for your fourlegged friend to munch on, feel free. Sunscreen is also a must, and a small water bottle is highly recommended. The ranch can provide a saddlebag to hold items during the ride. Long pants, closed-toe shoes and a brimmed hat are also necessities. Children under 12 must wear a helmet.
Guided horseback rides are part of the service industry, so while tipping is not required, it sure is appreciated.
Whether you want to return to the town’s Western roots or see the Yampa Valley’s beautiful scenery from a different perspective (atop a horse), trail rides salute Steamboat’s history and nature, and are the perfect way to see more of the mountains.
See all horseback riding outfitters on page VG 52.

Strolling, Steep or Rolling: Trails for All
Young or old, hiking or riding, a first-time explorer or a seasoned adventurer – the Yampa Valley has trails for all, both downtown and through the surrounding mountains.
To access Emerald Mountain trails, start at the iconic Howelsen Hill, which is walking (or riding) distance from downtown. Take Blackmere Trail up to the quarry, then stop to rest your legs while admiring stunning views over the valley before heading back down.
For a family-friendly stroll, or a more technical mountain bike ride, follow the bubbling stream that is Spring Creek. The trail is a perfect out-and-back for hiking (the length can be easily adjusted) or more adventurous bike riders can take off on the downhill-only Spring Roll Trail, which starts at Dry Lake Campground on Buffalo Pass.
Fish Creek Falls is the most popular hike in the valley, and for good reason. With options for all levels of hikers, including wheelchair access on the Overlook Trail, Fish Creek offers strolls or steeper hikes, all with dramatic views. For a dose of both history and nature in one, try the Uranium Mine Trail, ending at an abandoned Cold War-era uranium mine.
Mountain bikers will want to check out Buffalo Pass for Flash of Gold and Grouse Ridge. The trails hold both thrill and scenic surroundings. Beginner mountain bikers looking for the same level of awe-inspiring views but less difficult riding should try Panorama. Both sets of trails are on Buffalo Pass. Remember, riders should yield to pedestrians and horses.
Early spring brings muddy trails, so if a trail is closed or looks extra muddy, stay off it to preserve its future use. Though it’s much easier to stay on track with the help of cell phones, many trails do not have cell service, especially those that are farther afield. To keep a map on hand, download a trail app such as Trailforks or MTB Project. Remember that weather in the Rockies is constantly changing – bring lots of sunscreen (the higher you are, the closer you are to the sun) and an extra layer or rain jacket in case unexpected clouds roll in. For a successful hike, keep a backpack stocked with snacks and water, wear a good hat to block the alpine rays and be sure to wear closed-toe shoes.

For the sake of the fish and other river-users, make sure not to bring glass and to pick
Standup paddleboarding is all the rage on the Yampa, where the gently meandering water and scenic views provide prime paddling. Depending on experience level, you can target fasterflowing stretches or stick to tranquil pools to gain confidence on
Kayaking and rafting on the Yampa are popular in the spring and early summer, when water levels are high and the current runs fast. Rent your raft or kayak from a local outfitter and feel the thrill of riding spring runoff’s rushing waters. Some of the whitewater is class III, with surrounding rivers rising to the levels of classes IV and even V in the spring, so consult with local paddlers to make certain the stretch of water you are planning to paddle is suitable for your skill level.
Free public fishing access can be found along the Yampa River’s downtown stretch year-round. Cast a line for rainbow and brown trout while viewing epic vistas of Howelsen Hill and Steamboat Resort. Make sure to follow the tips and guidelines listed here: www.steamboatchamber.com/activities/water-activities/fishing/.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs welcomes locals and visitors alike for $20, 365 days a year, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Before you hop in your car and hightail it up County Road 36, there are some things you should consider: the road is dirt, windy and narrow. Save yourself some stress and consider taking a shuttle (also, parking is limited). Visit www.strawberryparkhotsprings.com/shuttles/ to check the schedule and make a reservation. Real adventurers can do the 6-mile hike from Mad Creek (just make sure to keep an eye out for wildlife like bears, snakes and bobcats – no, we’re not kidding).
Make sure you reserve your arrival date and time beforehand, as you will be turned away at the entrance without a reservation. Also available for reservations are a train caboose, five cabins, three covered wagons, as well as tent and vehicle camping sites, if you’d like to spend the night and be on site in the morning to enjoy the pools. For all the adults in the room, clothing becomes optional at sundown and at this time, minors are not allowed. Be sure to leave your pets, booze and glass at home.
Throw on a swimsuit (or don’t), submerse yourself in the natural waters and soak your problems away.

Downtown Days
Downtown Steamboat Springs is a great place to start, end or spend your day. Steamboat is known for hearty breakfasts (and great Bloody Marys); huevos rancheros or breakfast burritos are a great way to fuel up before a day of adventure. Try locals-favorite Winona’s Restaurant and get there early to avoid a waitlist or grab a coffee to sip on until your table is ready.
Choose a few souvenirs made locally, like leather goods from Coleman’s Haberdashery or candles from Alpine Bee Candles. Peruse F.M. Light & Sons for Western wear like cowboy boots and hats or browse through Off the Beaten Path for your next read. Ohana makes custom-printed t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, and offers a beautifully curated selection of gifts. If you’re looking for a
bargain, the annual sidewalk sale happens twice per summer on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
In the heat of the afternoon, there’s no better place for happy hour than a table overlooking the Yampa River. Snag a spot at E3 Chophouse, where you can lounge riverside in an Adirondack chair, sip on a cold cocktail and watch the tubers float by. If you have kids in town, try the patio at Yampa River Ice House – youngsters can play lawn games while adults chat at the table.
As the sun sinks down behind the mountains, outdoor dining is at its finest in the summertime. Grab a table on the rooftop of Salt & Lime to catch the sunset or dine under the twinkling lights on Mambo’s patio. A walk down Yampa Street, with its canopy of lights, is a relaxing way to end a downtown day.

HISTORIC WALKING TOUR
Walk back in time and discover historic Steamboat Springs
Astroll through downtown reveals the history and development of our community and buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Town founder, James H. Crawford and a handful of settlers established the first post office, school, church, saw mill, newspaper and hotel. These early visionaries built handsome stone storefronts as a testament to the town’s potential amidst the wilderness.
1 | TREAD OF PIONEERS MUSEUM | 800 OAK ST.
Constructed by Ernest Campbell in 1901, this was home to the Zimmerman family from 1914 to 1956. In 1959, the Tread of Pioneers Museum opened in this building on the corner of Fifth and Oak Streets. In 1988, the building was moved to this location. The Utterback house ● was also moved to the site in 1997 from its original location at Fourth and Oak and adjoined to the museum. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
2 | GIAMBONI HOUSE | 646 OAK ST.
Camillo Giamboni built this structure in 1888. Hidden under the siding is the original log building. This was home to Swiss brothers Henry and Camillo Giamboni, who were the first to make skis commercially in Steamboat Springs.
3 | CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH | SEVENTH & OAK ST. ● ● ● Margaret Crawford, founding mother of Steamboat Springs, was a charter member of the town’s Christian Science Society, organized in July 1908. The log building, which continues to house the Christian Science Church, was completed in November 1934.
4 | WILLETT HOUSE | 443 OAK ST. ●
Built in 1906, this home is one of the few remaining pre-railroad vernacular wood frame structures in town. It has been owned by local noteworthy individuals such as George and Archibald Wither, Judge Charles Morning and most significantly Dr. F.E. Willett. Willett tirelessly served as the community doctor for nearly 60 years.
5 | ROUTT COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 522 LINCOLN AVE. ●
The cornerstone for the Routt County Courthouse was laid on Sept. 9, 1922. Designed by noted Colorado architect Robert Fuller, the three-story building was completed in December 1923 at a cost of $122,000.
6 | THE OLD TOWN PUB | 600 LINCOLN AVE.
Built in 1904 by Ernest Campbell, this structure was originally the U.S. Post Office, followed by the Royal and Albany Hotels. From
Compiled with the help of the Tread of Pioneers Museum and Historic Routt County, the tour takes approximately one to two hours. Public parking is available on 8th and Oak streets across from the museum.
1914 to 1921, the building was a hospital run by Dr. F.E. Willett. After the hospital relocated, the second floor became the popular Odd Fellows dance hall. The first floor served as a grocery, electric store and public libray from 1924 to 1967.
7 | PIONEER BUILDING | 700 BLOCK OF LINCOLN AVE. ●
The Pioneer Buidling served as a hotel from 1923 until 1979. In its heyday, the upstairs rooms were run as a classic Western boarding house and the downstairs housed the colorful Pioneer Bar.
8 | FIRST NATIONAL BANK/REHDER BUILDING | EIGHTH & LINCOLN AVE. (STEAMBOAT ART MUSEUM) ● ● ●
The First National Bank of Steamboat Springs, chartered in 1902, occupied a small frame structure on this site until the present building was constructed in 1905. Dakota sandstone from the Emerald Mountain quarry, and handmade bricks from Trogler’s local brickyard were used in the construction.
9 | CHIEF THEATER | 813 LINCOLN AVE. ●
The Chief Theater was constructed by local master builder Arthur Gumprecht in 1926 and owned by Harry Gordon. The large, singlestory brick masonry building included an orchestra pit, stage and the capacity to seat 500 people, making it the largest theater in Northwest Colorado.
10 | HOWELSEN HILL | SEEN FROM NINTH AND LINCOLN AVE. ● ● ●
Rising up steeply from the south side of the Yampa River, this section of Emerald Mountain is named for Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen, the “Flying Norseman” of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. Howelsen arrived in Steamboat Springs in 1913 and introduced the townspeople to ski jumping and recreational skiing. By the 1930s, Howelsen Hill facilities included slalom and downhill courses, lights for night skiing, and a “boat tow” consisting of two sleds pulled up the mountain by a cable powered by a Model T engine and transmission. In 1947, a combination chair/T-bar lift was installed to the top of Emerald Mountain; it was one of the longest

11 | HARWIG’S SADDLERY | 911 LINCOLN AVE. (HARWIG’S & L’APOGÉE)
Built in 1901, this was originally a meat market. In 1916 it became Harwig’s Saddlery and Western Wear, which was run by the Harwig family until 1984. The historic cowboy sign over the storefront was painted in the 1950s or 1960s by noted Western artist Merrill Mahaffey. The cowboy is now on display inside, safe from the elements, in the restaurant’s vestibule where he welcomes restaurant patrons.
12 | THE OLD PILOT BUILDING | 1009 LINCOLN AVE.
James Hoyle began Northwest Colorado’s first newspaper, The Steamboat Pilot, on July 31, 1885. This brick and stone building was constructed in the fall of 1909 for the newspaper printing office, which occupied the building until 1999.
13 | STEAMBOAT LAUNDRY BUILDING | 11TH AND OAK ST. (THE LAUNDRY RESTAURANT & CREEKSIDE CAFÉ) ● ●
Built over a 13-year period starting in 1906, this two-story brick and river-rock structure was constructed for the Steamboat Laundry, Dry Cleaning and Pressing business, which it served as until the late 1970s.
14 | CARVER POWER PLANT | TENTH STREET BETWEEN LINCOLN AVE. AND OAK ST. (CENTENNIAL HALL) ● ●
Originally built as a wood building in 1901, this coal-fired power plant made Steamboat Springs the first town in Northwest Colorado to provide its residents with electricity. The steam, a by-product of the system used to create electricity, was used to heat nearby schools and residences. The building continued to serve as a power plant until the 1950s. In the late 1990s, the City of Steamboat Springs purchased and rehabilitated the structure for public use as the historic portion of Centennial Hall.
15 | LORENZ BUILDING | 928 LINCOLN AVE.
This brick building was built in 1903. In 1912, it became the courthouse when the county seat relocated from Hahn’s Peak. After 1921, the courtroom occupied the second floor, while the clerk, treasurer and jail shared the ground floor. When the present-day courthouse was completed in 1923, the building became the site of a dance hall called the Social Benefit Association.
16 | HUGUS BUILDING/THIESEN MALL | 912 LINCOLN AVE.
(STEAMBOAT SMOKEHOUSE)
Built in 1899, this was the site of J.W. Hugus & Co., one of the nation’s first general store chains. The original brick storefront is hidden under the contemporary façade.
17 | MAXWELL/SQUIRE BUILDING | 840 LINCOLN AVE.
(LYON DRUG STORE) ● ●
Construction of the building was financed by town investor, J.P. Maxwell. The building was constructed with local pressed brick from Trogler’s brickyard, and completed with local stone trim and plate glass. From 1909 to 1962, the post office occupied the ground floor. In 1909, Chamberlain-Grey Drug Store took over ownership. Now, over 100 years later, the building is still home to a locally owned drug store/pharmacy.
18 | F.M. LIGHT & SONS | 830 LINCOLN AVE.
The F.M. Light family moved from Hicksville, Ohio to Steamboat in 1905. Soon after their arrival, they purchased the lot, erected the building and secured enough merchandise to open this clothing store. Light family members traveled throughout Northwest Colorado and Southern Wyoming displaying their merchandise and taking orders from ranchers for Western wear, hats, boots, saddles and equipment. The retail store is still owned by family members.
19 | THE FURLONG BUILDING | 810 LINCOLN AVE. (BUSHWACKER’S)
This building was started in 1919 and finished in July of 1920 using stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry to frame the windows. Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen completed the brickwork and masonry.
20 | THE ROUTT COUNTY NATIONAL BANK BUILDING | 802 LINCOLN AVE. (WILD HORSE GALLERY) ● ●
Built in 1919 with stonework by Carl Howelsen, this building is a unique landmark of two different periods. The Lincoln Avenue façade shows the rehabilitated 1919 exterior, and the Eighth Street side displays the changes from the 1940s.
Extended Tour
A. AND B. CRAWFORD HOUSES | 1238 AND 1184 CRAWFORD AVE. ● ●
Crawford homes are private residences so please respect private property. The second and third houses built by the founding family of Steamboat Springs, the Crawfords, are still standing. The second home, at 1238 Crawford Ave. (on 12th Street), was built in 1886 from native lumber from the Suttle Mill. The bay window was added later to accommodate their daughter’s wedding reception. The large stone house at 1184 Crawford Ave. ● ● was built in 1894 of stone from the Emerald Mountain quarry. The family occupied this house until Mrs. Crawford’s death in 1939. Crawford’s descendants purchased the house in 2004 and carefully restored it.
C. HISTORIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING | 1201 LINCOLN AVE. (YAMPA VALLEY LAND TRUST) ●
Located along Soda Creek next to the library, this small 1960 structure is one of Czechoslovakian-born architect Eugene Sternberg’s two midcentury modern “Usonian style” buildings in downtown Steamboat Springs (listed on the National Historic Register). The building’s nearly flat inverted pitch roof gives the visual impression of a butterfly in flight, so that locally, the building is known as the “Butterfly Building.”
D. THE DEPOT | 1001 13TH ST. ● ● ●
Designed by famous Denver architect Frank E. Edbrooke, the railroad Depot was fully financed by the citizens and businesses of the town in order to entice the railroad line through Steamboat Springs. Construction for the building began shortly before the first passenger train arrived on January 6, 1909 and was operational by August of that year. Passenger service was discontinued in 1968, and eventually the Depot became home to Steamboat Creates and the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts.

* Check with local U.S. Forest Service offices regarding status of campgrounds, day use areas, and trailheads. The COVID-19 situation may result in delayed openings or closures to ensure safe social distancing and conforming to group size limits. The Forest Service is coordinating its COVID-19 response to align with federal, state and local guidance. Everyone is urged to take precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Minimize your impact by not traveling on muddy trails which degrade the quality and long term sustainability of the trail. Cautionary Notes
1. Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Check in with them upon your return.
2. Weather changes rapidly in the mountains. Plan high elevation trips for the morning hours. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning are common. The threat is most significant along ridge lines, high points and open areas. Do not seek shelter under trees.
3. Minimize your exposure to the sun.
4. Pace yourself and drink lots of water.
5. High altitude sickness symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and weakness. Rest, proper hydration and descent to a lower elevation can alleviate symptoms.
