Welcome to Steamboat Springs

Thank you for choosing or considering a visit to the beautiful Yampa Valley this winter. We’re so glad you want to experience it, and hope we get the chance to host you!

A visit to this valley is more than Champagne Powder® snow skiing – it’s fine dining in downtown Steamboat Springs, tubing at Howelsen Hill, and snowmobiling on Rabbit Ears Pass. It’s walking through snowy pine trees, observing Western art, and shopping on Lincoln Avenue.

Steamboat Springs, like many ski towns, is known for our world-class skiing, but what makes us different is our unique Western culture and heritage. We encourage you to explore all Steamboat Springs has to offer and discover why it has become a favorite destination for visitors around the world – no matter the season. Whether it’s riding horses on a nearby ranch or soaking in our historic hot springs, there are plenty of ways to connect with our heritage and make lifelong memories.

As you explore Steamboat Springs, help us preserve the natural beauty and character of our town. Keep wildlife wild, plan and prepare for your adventures, and consider using the

free bus to get around. Come see us at the Steamboat Springs Visitor Center for tips on how to get the most out of your stay!

In this guide, you’ll find local recommendations for our wide range of restaurants, activities and shops. Yampa Valley residents take pride in our Western roots and winter recreation, so you’ll be pleased to find a diversity of offerings, from our free art museum to sleigh rides and cross-country skiing.

When you decide to take a break from snow activities, head to the Mountain Village, or Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street downtown to dine locally or shop for a special souvenir. Whether it’s the slopes or the shops, we hope you have an amazing time exploring all our community has to offer.

Welcome to our home and happy snow days!

Sarah Leonard and her husband, George Gess.

Mastering Terrain

GREEN: Steamboat has so much to offer for green-loving skiers. Unlike other mountains, we have greens all around our resort, so you’re not limited to the base.

TIP: My biggest tip for green skiers is to let gravity, rather than leg muscles, help you slow down. Turn your skis back up the hill for a moment to slow your momentum before starting your next turn. Using the slope to manage speed allows you to ski longer without getting tired and will give you more confidence if you feel like tackling blue slopes or parallel skiing.

TRY: Wild Blue Way – hidden off Christy Peak Express midstation – for a crowd-free practice space. For the green skier interested in viewing Steamboat’s natural beauty, I recommend

Steamboat ski instructor Paige Rylander shares tips and trails for every level.

taking a gravity-powered scenic tour down Why Not, located just beyond Thunderhead Lodge. Make sure to take a bathroom break before you start – this trail is over three miles long!

BLUE: With the addition of the Wild Blue gondola, blue cruisers have never been easier to access.

TIP: Point both kneecaps where you want to go. The tricky part is only pointing with your knees and not the rest of your body. Stay centered over your feet with your torso, trying not to lean in the same direction as your knees. If you’ve already mastered that, you can add some forward motion at the start of each turn: Imagine you’re trying to push your shin down into your big toe before each turn, and it will help engage the front of your ski and enable you to have quicker, more accurate turns.

TRY: My favorite trail, on what we call the “Sunnyside” of the mountain, is Quickdraw. It’s wide open and offers beautiful views of the Yampa Valley in addition to being the perfect length. There is good access to playful trees on the right side of the run, and it’s easily lapable via Sunshine Express. More daring blue skiers can head over to the famous Heavenly Daze, at the top of Thunderhead, for breathtaking views, or the more hidden Sunset, for crowd-free skiing (from the top of Four Points; cut right on the cat track afterwards).

BLACK: When visiting Steamboat, comfortable skiers must make it to our famous tree skiing, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even get a taste of our Champagne Powder® to go with them.

TIP: As you venture off piste, vision and path-finding become

important components of skiing. When I’m in trees, I always spot a path that has an uphill option in case I need to scrub speed. An easy place to find these uphill routes is on the backside of aspen trees, which don’t have tree wells and often have deep snowbanks to help with speed management.

TRY: Hot Cakes, found from the top of Sunshine Peak, is a true winter playground with natural jumps, boulders, trees and good snow. Another hidden gem is Ted’s Ridge, particularly at the end of the day when Heavenly Daze gets crowded (make sure to check the grooming reports as it is not always groomed).

DOUBLE BLACK: With the opening of Mahogany Ridge, Steamboat now has easy access to some wicked extreme terrain.

TIP: For the skiers that charge, I recommend thinking of shifting your weight and ending your turn, sooner than you ever thought you should. Particularly in steeps, we can get caught up so heavy on our outside ski (downhill ski when finishing a turn) that starting a new turn becomes a workout. Recognize this and begin your weight shift early so you can shred a little extra gnar by the end of the day.

TRY: To warm up before you head off into the canyon, I recommend a quick drop into Chute 1 for 10... okay, maybe 15 of the best turns of your life. I do recommend going with someone who knows routes through the gates off of Mahogany Ridge, but Granola Bowl, accessed from the first gate on skiers right headed down under Mahogany Ridge Express, is a fairly open and enjoyable steep and deep route for thrill-seekers.

LOCAL EXPERTISE, BROAD REACH

Greenhorn Ranch, which opened in 2023, is a state-of-the-art learning space for beginners.

Kids Fun: Covered

Keepkids entertained on vacation with ski lessons, ice skating and family-friendly mountainside events. When the adults are zipping down Mount Werner’s double black diamonds, kids of all ages can enjoy a fun-filled day on the slopes in group lessons with professional instructors. Sign up never-evers and novices for beginner group ski lessons. The groups are separated by age and accommodate children from three to 17 years old. Group lessons are full day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and both rental gear (if needed) and lift tickets must be purchased, along with the cost of the lesson. If your kiddo is looking for one-on-one instruction to improve their skiing skills, invest in a private lesson ranging from 1 1/2 hours for children aged 2-4, or up to seven hours for kids over the age of 7. For more information and to book a lesson, visit www.steamboat.com.

Take a spin on Skeeter’s Ice Rink, named for local Olympian Skeeter Werner (Mount Werner is named for her brother, Buddy). Bring your own skates or rent either hockey or figure skates on site. Rentals are first come, first serve. Afterwards, warm up with hot chocolate from Timber & Torch.

Family-friendly events take place at the base of the mountain all winter long. Kick off 2025 with the Light Up Snow Cat Parade featuring synchronized skiers holding lit torches. Stay until the end to catch a dazzling firework show, ringing in

the new year Steamboat style. On Sunday, Jan. 19, watch the Cowboy Up drone show, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cowboy Downhill, which takes place the next day, Monday, Jan. 20. It’s a fun-filled event featuring over 100 professional cowboys who try their hand at a downhill slalom course, go over a jump, lasso a person, saddle a horse and cross the finish line. On Saturday, Feb. 15, join Light Up The Night as hot air balloons glow at the base of the mountain. The event ends with fireworks and a torchlight parade.

More Skiing… Make it Nordic

Thehidden gem of Steamboat Springs’ skiing paradise is its plethora of Nordic trails. This winter, skim across Steamboat’s trails without crowds of downhill skiers. Visit Haymaker Nordic Center, offering 10 km of groomed trails perfect for any winter outing, from classic to skate skiing.

For a taste of Steamboat’s history, head downtown to Howelsen Hill and enjoy 21 km of trails on Colorado’s oldest operating ski area. A daily ticket or season pass is required; purchase one at the Howelsen Hill ticket office during regular business hours. Don’t miss Howelsen’s Free Ski Sunday – just stop by the ticket office to pick up your free ticket, allowing access to the lifts and all trails.

If you need a refresher, visit the Steamboat Ski Touring Center for classic and skate skiing lessons offered daily with expert Nordic skiers. Whether you’re a novice or advanced skier, you’ll leave your lesson feeling ready to conquer the 15 km of groomed trails sprawling across Rollingstone Golf Course.

If you’re itching to ski along trails immersed in nature but not too far from town, take a trip to the alluring trails of Lake Catamount. Lake Catamount Ski Touring Center offers Nordic trails for all levels of experience, plus rentals of both classic and skate skis.

Drive 25 miles north of Steamboat, to Steamboat Lake State Park, complete with groomed trails and picturesque Colorado scenery. Gear cannot be rented, so make sure to bring your own. In addition to gear, you’ll need both an entry pass and vehicle pass that must be purchased to spend a day in the State Park. You’ll want to stay longer than a day; the 15 km of beginner to intermediate level trails will leave you wishing you could stay forever in the calm serenity of snowy Colorado hills.

Join Yampatika for a moonlit snowshoe tour. It’s easy to appreciate the beauty of quiet Steamboat evenings alongside expert naturalists who highlight details of the surroundings. Cost is $30, including the price of snowshoe rentals. The tour is two hours long and includes a steady incline up the trail. The tours in December, January and February are 2.5 miles

Once the sun sets, take a drive up north to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Reservations are required for entry and the entry fee is $20, cash only (note – there is no ATM on site). Leave alcohol, snacks and glass containers at home. Minors cannot enter the hot springs after sundown due to clothing being optional after dark. Steamboat’s outdoor lifestyle can leave you in need of hydration, relaxation or oxygen in a relaxed setting.

Après at the Spa

There is no better place to après than at the spa – luckily, Steamboat Springs is home to several rejuvenating spas to ensure that your vacation includes relaxation.

Waterside Day Spa & Salon, located in the heart of downtown, is the only spa in Steamboat with a salt therapy suite, which offers a one-of-a-kind holistic respiratory detox. If you’re feeling the effects of Steamboat’s high mountain altitude, this treatment can help relieve altitude sickness and help the body to more easily absorb oxygen.

Or, head to Rocky Mountain Day Spa and indulge in the Skier’s Paradise spa package. This specialized treatment includes a 90-minute therapeutic full-body massage, a specialized foot massage treatment, and a 15-minute infrared sauna session.

Check out Steamboat’s only IV wellness clinic, Replenish IV Therapies, which specializes in alleviating symptoms of jet lag, altitude sickness, dehydration and more. Whether you want to enhance your skiing performance on the slopes the next day, or simply want to relieve some of your stress and fatigue, IV treatments can enhance wellness during your ski town vacation.

Take a break from winter adventures and head downtown to experience the vibrant art galleries and museums of Steamboat Springs. This winter, Steamboat Art Museum presents “Art in Sport: Motion, Emotion, Moments and Light,” complete with sport-inspired photographs, sculptures and paintings. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is always free.

Across the street, Wild Horse Gallery showcases art from local, regional and nationally known artists. The gallery offers free art consultations and appointments with experienced art curators who can assist in finding the perfect piece to add to personal fine art collections.

If you’re looking for a modern twist on wild west artwork, stop by The Westerly. Family-friendly and welcoming, the gallery prides itself on its low-key, unpretentious vibe. Sidle up to the bar and sip a signature cocktail as you peruse the selection of Western-inspired art.

creative locations during First Friday ArtWalk,
the first Friday of each month.

The Jace Romick Gallery is three galleries in one and houses the only collection in the world of Roland Reed’s images of the indigenous people of the West at the turn of the 20th century.

A few blocks up is Pine Moon Fine Art, featuring pieces and exhibits by 14 local artists who work in mediums including glass, bronze, paper, watercolor and photography.

At the Jace Romick Gallery, amidst Jace’s own photographs of wildlife, skiing and rodeo, you’ll find the only Roland Reed gallery in the world. In 2021, Jace had the opportunity to buy the entire collection of photographer Roland Reed’s artifacts, now housed in his gallery. You’ll also find plenty of local artists who work in a variety of mediums from painting to photography.

Turn dinner into date night at one of Steamboat’s many restaurants.

Date Night for Two

This vacation, treat yourself (and a date) to a romantic dinner.

There are options: Mambo Italiano turns out handmade pastas, pizzas and classic Italian fare in a cozy downtown setting. Across the street, its sister restaurant, Bésame, offers global fusion, Latin flavors and creative cocktails.

At Primrose, the menu is seasonal but always includes fresh, local ingredients. Try the Lockhart Martini, named after the iconic Steamboat auctioneer, who said, “One ain’t enough…and three’s too many.”

Table 79 Foodbar serves up a great happy hour with $10 cocktails and snacks like portabella fries and crispy Brussels sprouts. Stay for dinner or head to its affiliated restaurants, Aurum Food & Wine (downtown) or Periodic Table (located at the Catamount golf course). The later offers themed menus with a fresh take each winter. If you’re craving a steak, E3 Chophouse offers a complete ranch-to-table experience, topped off with a decadent dessert.

If you want to stick closer to the mountain, try Truffle Pig where you can nosh on – what else – truffle fries, as well as seafood, burgers, steaks and more. Try the Smoak’d Old Fashioned, a longtime oaky menu favorite.

Need a babysitter? Call Steamboat Babysitting Company to make a reservation for a date night sitter. The family-owned company provides sitters for kids of any age straight to your condo or hotel.

Giddy Up!

Take in the winter scenery with a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Steamboat Lake Outpost offers daily scenic rides through a snowy meadow with views of the Zirkel Mountains. The 45-minute ride includes a trip to a warming hut where complimentary hot cocoa and cider are served. Afterwards, enjoy a meal at the onsite restaurant featuring creative takes on classic American fare. A general store, fuel, lodging, and snowmobile tours and rentals are also available onsite. For more information, visit steamboatlakeoutpost.com. Or book a sleigh ride dinner at Haymaker golf course. The experience is offered Thursday-Sunday from 4:30-9:30 p.m. The evening begins in the cozy clubhouse before the 20-minute-long ride. The ride is followed by a fourcourse, prix fixe dinner. Alcohol is not included in the price but is offered for an additional fee. If needed, shuttle transportation from the Steamboat Grand hotel can be booked at the time of the reservation. a horse-drawn sleigh ride before dinner at Steamboat Lake Outpost.

Forgot Gear? No Problem.

The downtown shopping district offers the opportunity to take home merchandise reflecting Steamboat’s Western style, including custom hats, cowboy boots, t-shirts and ski apparel.

Noneed to stress over a missing mitten or forgotten pair of snow pants, as Steamboat Springs’ many shops have all your winter “missings” covered. If you forgot to pack your chilly ski day necessities, take a trip to Ski Haus for the best base layer clothing to keep you warm and dry, winter boots – in a variety of well-known brands, like Sorel – and all the vital winter accessories that may have been lost in your packing, from ski goggles to neck gaiters.

If you want to take “ski town chic” to another level, stop by Steamboat’s newest high-end fashion and lifestyle shop, SBNY. The trendy store will complete your fashion-forward look, ensuring you hit the slopes in style with all the latest trends, from flared ski pants to puffy moon boots to faux fur mittens. When you’re done shopping, try their ski simulator, which transports shoppers virtually from the store to the slope. You can even take a private, hour-long ski or snowboard lesson with a skilled instructor who will tailor each lesson to your exact winter sports desires.

Back to shopping, though: For basic athletic clothes that are sure to meet all your ski trip needs, stop by Steamboat’s Lululemon shop where you’ll find trendy fitted leggings to wear under ski pants and loungewear sets to snuggle by the fire after a long day of skiing. Allen’s, down the street, offers the same vibe: cozy knits, functional leggings and warm socks.

To truly embrace the cowboy culture of Steamboat, head to F.M. Light & Sons. The shop is nearly 120 years old and is a Steamboat staple, complete with cowboy boots and hats, shelves of jeans and plenty of other Western wear.

Route description: Begin on the north side of the road. Skiing the route in a clockwise direction is less difficult, with gentler climbs and steeper descents through open and wooded areas. Views of the Yampa Valley and the Flat Tops are spectacular. The West Summit loops and surrounding terrain are the most popular skiing areas in the Hahn’s Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District.

◆ 1B West Summit Loop B 3.6 miles/5.4 miles (loop from trailhead) Access: This route is reached by skiing counter-clockwise on 1A. Ski past the first junction with 1B and climb to the top of the ridge. At the second junction, on the ridgetop, ski 1B to the east. This route is best skied in a clockwise direction. Route description: This route has several steep ascents and descents through heavy timber and open meadows.

◆ 1C South Summit Loop 3 miles Access: This route begins at the West Summit parking area. Park on the south side of the highway.

Route description: Travel counter-clockwise for the best downhill runs. The route begins by following an old road. Woods, open meadows and some steep descents are encountered. This route connects with route 3B midway around the loop. Past this junction, the route follows the telephone lines and old highway, paralleling U.S. 40. The final portion follows the meadow edge back to the West Summit, then retraces the first segment of old road.

■ 1D Bruce’s Trail 3.1 miles Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 14 miles to the parking area on the north side of the highway. A short spur connects the parking lot to the main trail.

Route description: Designed wide to accommodate both skating and traditional skiing techniques. The trail is machine-groomed in the early ski season. Note that dogs are not permitted when the trail is groomed. The upper loop provides easy skiing, while the lower loop has a moderate difficulty rating. The tight loop design and proximity to the highway make this trail a good choice for a ski workout, a short day, or for skiers wishing to remain relatively close to their vehicles.

◆◆ 2A Hogan Park Route 13 miles round trip Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area. One way, 6.5 miles to the bottom of Morningside Lift.

Route description: This route is recommended for experts only. If you plan to descend Mount Werner through the Steamboat Ski Area, safety straps are required. Begin on the north side of the highway just west of the large cut bank. The route crosses large open meadows and many

streams. Steep ascents and descents will be encountered. During heavy snowfall or whiteout conditions, the route is very difficult to follow across the large meadows. Carry emergency/ survival gear. If Morningside Lift is not operating, climb 1 mile to top of lift, then descend 3 miles to ski area base.

■ 2B Fox Curve Loop 3.6 miles Access: Travel approximately 17 miles east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 to the Fox Curve parking area. The parking area is on the north side of highway.

Route description: This route has varied terrain including steep ascents and descents. Use caution when crossing Walton Creek.

◆ 3A Walton Creek Loop 1.9 miles Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area on Rabbit Ears Pass. The parking area is on the south side of the highway.

Route description: Begin at the knoll south of the parking lot and follow the powerline a short distance to the west. Turn south across Walton Creek and through former Walton Creek Campground. The junction of route 3B is reached in the meadow south of the campground. Past this junction, the route makes a steep ascent over a ridge and down an open slope to Walton Creek and the junction of route 3C. Follow Walton Creek back to the parking area.

◆◆ 3B Par-A-Lell Route 3B route is 2.3 miles (or 4.2 miles for combined one-way from 1A to 3A) Access: This route can be accessed from route 1C, beginning at the West Summit parking area on the south side of the highway, or from route 3A, beginning at the Walton Creek parking area.

Route description: This route connects routes 1C and 3A. Skiing it west to east provides more exciting downhill runs; skiing east to west involves more climbing, though much of it is gentle. Starting at the junction of 1C and 3B (west end), the route goes up a gentle slope and drops into a stream valley. Use caution when crossing streams and beaver ponds on this route as they may be only partially frozen. Heavy timber and open meadows.

■ 3C North Walton Peak Route 3.25 miles (one-way)/6.5 miles (loop from trailhead) Access: Travel east of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40 approximately 18 miles to the Walton Creek parking area.

Route description: This is the most popular route for telemarking. Begin at the knoll to the south of the parking area and head southeast and downhill through the trees following route 3A. Approximately 1/2 mile from the parking area is the junction of 3A and 3C. The route crosses Walton Creek and travels through wooded areas and open meadows. It connects to Forest Road 302 and follows it to the top of North Walton Peak. Opportunities for steep runs exist on the slopes of this peak.
