“ The first week of the two month apprenticeship is completed! The works began with the repair of the drystone walls alongside the pathway steps, taking up from where the last year’s stone masonry workshop left off. There is indeed great satisfaction since these first five days have been full of energy and team spirit. Special credits to Argyris Karagiorgas who shared his photos with us! “ The 2nd week of KLDx2 had (quite some) digging. The reason for this is that we set up to build two drystone retaining walls to support and broaden the ground where the cobbled pathway will pass through. One of the many interesting parts of this process was the construction of a scaffold with timber battens, planks and boards. At the same time a little bit up the road, the preparations for the laying of the kalderimi where advancing (more digging). “ On Wednesday 25 September we begun to lay the stones of Plaka’s restored kalderimi! The day before, the works on the retaining wall were over and in the afternoon we visited the waterfalls of Kataraktis village, in central Tzoumerka. Mon 30 Sep - Fri 4 Oct 2019 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Laying the kalderimi - preparing and placing ‘arkades’
“ Some time ago we decided that the steep parts of the pathway should be equipped with ‘arkades’ (vertical stones that serve as guardrails). So the time came! And the large stones were picked out and carved properly in order to be built in the kalderimi structure. Furthermore –and despite the bad turn in the weather– we begun the pointing of the pathway with soil and sand. Beyond the fieldwork, we walked up to the church of Agios Vasilios, above the Arachthos gorge, we visited the monastery of Tsouka (12 century AD) and the Silversmithing museum in Ioannina. Mon 14 - 18 Oct 2019 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part I of the Twelve-day Stone Masonry Workshop
“ The 12day workshop begun last Wednesday with a full-day trip in the region of Tzoumerka! During the days that followed, quite a few things happened: We visited an old quarry along Arachthos river, we attended lectures at Pramanta Conference Center and Mouchousti Cultural Center, we prepared clay and lime mortars and applied them in the interior of a beautiful stone house which kindly opened its doors for us. Yesterday, Sunday we visited the restoration site of Plaka Bridge and then we carved stone -and celebrated- with old stone masons from Tzoumerka! And somehow like this, the participants of the 12day workshop joined the apprentices of the 2month program! Our kalderimi is on the home straight now! � boulouki fb page Mon. 21 Oct. 2019

Mon 21 - Sun 27 Oct 2019 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part II of the Twelve-day Stone Masonry Workshop
“ On Monday 21 October, four working groups were developped along the historic pathway that leads to the bridge of Plaka. While the participants of the 12day workshop joined forces with the trainees of the 2month apprenticeship, the kalderimi begun to take shape. This past week, one of the moments that stood out was our visit at The “Theodoros Papagiannis” Museum of Contemporary Art where we were pleased to hear Mr. Papagiannis, who is an emeritus professor of the Athens School of Fine Arts, talk about his lifetime work. Already, since the morning of this same day, the stones that were carved by this great sculptor from Tzoumerka were being placed on the kalderimi. The Saturday lectures ended with the screening of “The Mountain Tears ” (2018) by Stelios Charalabopoulos, who honoured us with his presence. The last day of the workshop was dedicated at groups who advocate the participatory protection of cultural heritage, in Greece and abroad. Finally, the 12day workshop closed with a presentation of the “KalderimiX2” project by the members of Boulouki and a fiest with Kostas Kostagiorgos (violin), Vasilis Tsikas (lute) and the stentorious voice of Stefanos Margonis! ” boulouki fb page Sat. 2 Nov. 2019
