Timeless Appeal OAKVALE AVENUE • BERKELEY
H. L. Dungan designed and built this Arts and Crafts gem in 1915 for his family with the help of renowned local architect John Hudson Thomas. Set back from the street in a garden-like setting, this magical home was built beside Harwood Creek. In keeping with its architectural style, the emphasis is on craftsmanship and the intrinsic beauty of its building materials. The spectacular, two-story living room features redwood paneling, soaring exposed timber ceilings, walls of windows that frame the gardens, and French doors opening to a deck overlooking the creek. Warm wood tones, built-in cabinetry and a Craftsman chandelier lend intimacy to the spacious dining room. Four light-filled bedrooms and an informal country kitchen with an eating nook make this showcase home as delightful to live in today as it was a century ago. The master suite includes an adjoining dressing room, which could serve as an office, nursery or guest room. Upstairs on the third floor, a dramatic room with adjoining bedroom and full bath makes an ideal studio for an artist or writer who wants to work at home.
Modernism Redefined
TANGLEWOOD ROAD • BERKELEY HILLS Architect Charles Debbas completely transformed this spectacular MidCentury home to honor its modernist style and quiet cul-de-sac location in the Panoramic Hill neighborhood of Berkeley. It is a showcase house, designed to impress, that provides the best of indoor/outdoor living in the Bay Area. Contemporary grey tile and pebble steps lead from the street to a set of modern wood doors with horizontal panes from top to bottom. The horizontal line is featured throughout the home, creating a sense of restfulness and leading the eye to views of the outdoors. The entry wall is lined in mahogany-toned wood paneling with a horizontal grain. In the bright and open space that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen, a horizontal beam of bleached wood runs across the peaked ceiling. A dark porcelain tile inlay in the light hardwood floor leads from one end of the kitchen across to folding glass doors that open the entire wall to the newly landscaped garden. Outside, strips of tile and river rock are embedded in the perfectly manicured lawn, which is surrounded by olive trees, colorful maples, native grasses, fragrant lavender and black bamboo. This distinctive home includes four bedrooms, two of which are splendid master suites. One includes a fireplace and adjacent study; the other enjoys a private balcony and outdoor fireplace.
Modern Perspective STRATHMOOR DRIVE • BERKELEY HILLS Nestled atop the Claremont Hills, this spectacular home has what is often longed for but so rarely found in a hillside retreat. This residence features innovative architecture, a glorious pool surrounded by beautiful level grounds and panoramic vistas of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate. Flawlessly combining modern living with truly inviting elegant design, this AIA award-winning residence commands attention with daring architecture and walls of glass. Iconic, everchanging vistas surround this gem, morning until night, providing light, peace, and tranquility from a busy world. The luxurious master retreat opens to a private deck and teak spa, surrounded by canyon views, then leads up to a private home office that looks out onto the pool. Two additional bedrooms and three baths plus a family room and tiny loft complete this inviting floor plan. As breathtaking as it is eco-sensitive, this home features solar panels that flank the roof and a vehicle charging station. This magnificent property has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Dwell Magazine, and many ads such as Nest Home Thermostat, Del Monte, LinkedIn, and Cisco, and was prominently featured in the AIA home tour.
Above the Clouds AJAX PLACE • BERKELEY HILLS
Adjacent to Tilden Park in the North Berkeley Hills, a small enclave was created for a few select homes surrounding a very secluded cul-de-sac, in this sophisticated corner of the world. The home’s magnificent modern design is by Wong/Logan architects and was planned as their own home, appointed with a beautiful office with hand-crafted bookcases and cabinetry, a large media room with projector, and a fully outfitted gym. Natural light fills the entire home through large operable clerestory windows on one side and are complemented by tall two-story walls of glass that invite panoramic vistas across the home’s garden. This one-of-a-kind Berkeley residence plus the smaller adjacent Mid-Century home will serve most contemporary lifestyles. Featuring spectacular Bay and San Francisco skyline views, this property offers expansive gardens and maximum privacy. This unique compound has it all.
Kensington Kensington, which borders El Cerrito to the north, Berkeley to the south and Wildcat Canyon Regional Park to the east, is known for its top-rated elementary school, quaint boutique shops, Sunday Farmers Market and one of the most visited public libraries in the entire county. Curvy treelined streets and cul-de-sacs enhance its charm and make it one of the East Bay’s most beautiful places to live. In the early 20th century, Kensington was primarily a bucolic, grasscovered hillside dotted with dairy farms. Between 1920 and 1930, its population grew from 226 to 1,500, prompted by the Berkeley Fire of 1923. Perhaps because of its history as a place to seek refuge, Kensington, whose population now numbers over 5,000, has remained a safe, peaceful and comfortable place to live, with attractive architecture and a strong sense of community. While only minutes from the excitement of downtown Berkeley, Kensington offers an ideal lifestyle for outdoor enthusiasts.
Contemporary Design STANFORD AVENUE • KENSINGTON This spacious Kensington home was beautifully redesigned and renovated to showcase its timeless, traditional architecture and panoramic, bridge-tobridge views of the San Francisco Bay. The distinguished design team, Bee Renovated, used rich finishes, glass doors, custom molding and architectural columns salvaged from San Francisco’s famed Carnelian Room to create a sophisticated property to call home. On the main level, the grand living room and a dining room with Bay views invite formal entertaining. The new chef ’s kitchen makes cooking a pleasure, with professional appliances, stone counters, custom cabinets and an adjoining breakfast room with built-in cabinetry. Three of the home’s five bedrooms are also on the main floor. Downstairs, the garden level of the house provides spectacular views and easy access to a level garden, great for entertaining and play. This floor features a large family room with fireplace, the master retreat, whimsical bedroom, bathroom and a spacious laundry room. The home, located just blocks from Kensington Elementary School and charming shops, is just a 30-minute drive from San Francisco.
Mid-Century Classic YALE AVENUE • KENSINGTON Walls of windows, vaulted beam ceilings, clean lines, natural materials and an open floor plan – these are the hallmarks of Mid-Century Modern design. Connecting the inside to the outside, each room enjoys expansive views of the San Francisco Bay and the home’s beautifully manicured grounds. The kitchen was beautifully remodeled, incorporating a built-in dining booth, teak cabinetry, stone counters, top-of-the line appliances and fixtures. Other highlights include a vast pantry, utility room and a wine cellar. Each of the four bedrooms provides a calming refuge. The master suite has a full spa-inspired bath and its own private deck. Other bedrooms have built-in window seats, cabinetry or desks. Outside, paths meander through the private gardens, leading to a greenhouse, hidden tree house, and play structure.
Oakland
This city of roughly half a million residents was recently named one of the most exciting cities in America, with the greatest number of theater companies, music venues and museums per square mile. It enjoys the most parks per person and the best climate in the Bay Area. Oakland also ranks in the top ten for percentage of women-owned businesses and best drinking water. Add to that some of the most popular and innovative new restaurants around and it’s no surprise that Oakland is getting the attention it deserves. The last 200 years have been very exciting and transformative for the beautiful piece of land that we know today as Oakland. The City is experiencing one of the most notable renaissance movements since its inception in 1852. Luis Maria Peralta, the first European to legally claim title to these lands under the Spanish Crown, could not have imagined what his hacienda would one day become. Beyond its vibrant downtown, the constantly evolving city of Oakland offers a wide selection of livable neighborhoods including Rockridge, Montclair, the Uptown, Temescal, Lake Merritt, Glenview and Crocker Highlands. Each community has its own unique shopping and dining district, entertainment options and personality. All share access to the beautiful outdoors, with ample opportunities for walking and biking. Oakland is home to the oldest wildlife refuge and largest urban lake in the U.S., Lake Merritt, which was established in 1870, as well as the nation’s fifth largest port.

Piedmont
Today, Piedmont can
boast one of
the top school districts in California.
Its small commercial center is the site for one of the Bay Area’s most down-home Fourth of July parades. Five parks throughout the city offer wooded paths, tennis courts, picnic areas and children’s playgrounds. And recently, as testament to its sense of community spirit and ingenuity, the city inaugurated the new Piedmont Center for the Arts, which hosts music concerts, art and community events. Before its establishment as one of the Bay Area’s loveliest cities, with beautiful homes along quiet tree-lined streets, Piedmont was an open, rolling hillside featuring a dairy farm, rock quarry and 75-acre amusement park. By 1877, this spectacular location, with its sweeping bay views and warm weather, had captured the attention of James Gamble, president of Western Union Telegraph. He purchased 350 acres, built his own estate and formed the Piedmont Land Company in order to sell property and start a new community. As more homes were constructed Piedmont began attracting colorful artists like Xavier Martinez and writers like Jack London.
