Making Milton Home
THe AusTin FAMily BY MArCHeT BuTler Our new police chief and his family have started to make Milton their new home. Transplants from Charlotte, this family is a wonderful addition to our community. Here is a little more about the Austin family. rich is a native of Charlotte, north Carolina. In elementary school, rich started playing the trombone and developed a great love for that instrument as well as music in general. rich studied music at Appalachian state university but after he graduated, decided on a career change. His uncle and cousin were both police officers in the Charlotte Police department, and rich was interested in that profession as well. After completing the police academy, he started in the Pineville Police department which only had about eight officers at the time. “I watched Pineville’s department grow over the years to about the same size as our current department here in Milton. I loved that small town atmosphere.” In 1993, rich joined the Charlotte Police department. While a part of the force, he completed a second undergraduate and two masters degrees

in the criminal justice and public administration fields. Rich was promoted through the ranks and as watch commander for the city of Charlotte Police department, oversaw the entire operations of the police department during the night in the city. His most recent position before retiring from the department was captain of the internal affairs bureau. rich’s career in police work has been punctuated a few times times when rich pursued other interests. Along with his education and experience in law enforcement, rich has earned a masters in both music and Christian education. He also took a leave of absence to teach college music at the university of south Carolina. “I’ve found that the times I stepped away from law enforcement have given me a unique perspective. I remember what it’s like not to be a cop.” However, after 9/11, rich went back to law enforcement and “never looked back”, but education remains important to him. He is currently completing his doctorate in Public Administration.

Today, rich is heading the Milton Police department as its new chief. “What attracted me to Milton was the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a tight-knit, new community. It’s also a great location – a metro area with rural beauty and a cosmopolitan feel. He also loves how the emphasis of the police work here in Milton is public service.

Ruby and the Bookmarks OriginAl JukebOx MusicAl cOMedy TO Open in MAy BY MArCHeT BuTler On May 12th, Bill Purdie will see a years-long goal fulfilled. ruby and the Bookmarks, his first play, will be performed at the Canton Theatre. The play is dedicated to ruby Purdie, Bill’s wife and best friend of 48 years (pictured here with Bill). This romantic jukebox comedy follows the life of two teens who fall in love and build a life together into their golden years. Their story is told in part by the music, popular songs from the 50s and 60s chosen for the poetry and sentiment of the songs. “The play partially parallels our lives,” said Bill, who came to playwriting after retiring from his full-time career in the technology industry. Bill said he’d been the class clown in high school, and “I guess you never grow out of that.” His play is a comedy, and Bill said he wants his “audience to go away smiling.” The play is produced by Ralph Zaffino and Cheryl Lambert of Broadway Bound Productions. “There are a lot of people who have ‘always had a play in them,’” said Ralph Zaffino, an actor and director who has extensive experience in high school and community theater. ralph and wife Cheryl, a former television director, produce three plays a year. Their production company grew out of ralph and Cheryl’s desire to foster original work and help new playwrights refine and workshop their plays in hopes of having them published. When he isn’t involved in preparing for the upcoming production, Bill Purdie has two other plays in the works and serves on Milton’s Cultural Arts Committee. You can buy tickets for ruby and the Bookmarks at broadwayboundproductionsinc.com. The play runs from May 12th to 21st.

Health
dO yOu HAve yOur dOcTOr’s cell nuMber?
BY dr. rOlF MeInHOld
does this scenario sound familiar? You were in your usual state of good health, when, at 5:30 on a Friday afternoon, you begin to feel nauseated. unfortunately, this quickly progresses to vomiting and, knowing that the children at your child’s school have been out with a similar illness for 24-48 hours, you pick up the phone to call your doctor. The answering service informs you your doctor is not on call but the on-call provider will get back to you. One hour and several trips to the restroom later, a nurse practitioner calls you back. You explain your situation but, again unfortunately, since she does not know your health situation and, since you are already slightly lightheaded from fluid losses, she advises you to go to the nearest emergency room. There, after a three hour wait, you get a full panel of blood work, ekg, CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis, IV fluids and Phenergan, all to the tune of $10,000 to $15,000 with a personal copay of $1,000 to $2000. Contrast this with a call to your personal physician’s cell phone. If I am your doctor, you will have access to it. knowing you and your medical condition and the illness ravaging the community, I call in Phenergan suppositories, advise you to hold off on your blood pressure medication, and recommend that you follow a rehydration regimen to get you back to health. Oh, and by the way, I call the next day to check on how you are doing.
This is but one example of how personalized preventative health care works and can save a family in time, frustration, and money. There have been other situations in which a closer working relationship has clearly benefitted patients. Along with my two medical assistants, I have often tracked down other physician-initiated x-ray or biopsy results done earlier in the week that carry significant medical and therefore psychological importance to the patient. I know this information needs to be communicated as soon as possible. There are many advantages of being a patient of our office. If you happen to be traveling in another state and become ill, we will find an excellent doctor for you and set up an appointment. Children under the age of 26 are seen and charged for the insurance co-pay only. One of the most significant benefits of the practice is the oneand-a-half-hour wellness exam every year. Of course, 30 minutes routine office visits are always appreciated by patients who feel “run through the mill” in some medical offices. I enjoy the challenge of quarterbacking care for my patients involving various providers, such as specialists, physical therapists, plus wound care and home health care providers. This is all accomplished with the help of his my skilled medical assistants and office manager. Having a smaller staff allows the office to know all of our patients and for them to know the staff. Vicki and Tammy, the two medical assistants are available to take your phone calls Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. If you are a patient of our office, there is no barrier between you and the doctor during non-office hours. Our office is conveniently located in Crabapple, across from the silos. If you would like to set up a meeting with me to see if this model would benefit you or someone in your family, please call the office and speak with Vicki or Tammy at 770-772-9195.

realty
eq•ui•ty Function: noun 1 a : a right, claim, or interest existing or valid in equity b : the money value of a property or of an interest in a property in excess of claims or liens against it c : a risk interest or ownership right in property
build HOMe equiTy FAsTer BY THe MerCATus reAlTY llC TeAM If you own property that’s worth $250,000, and you have a mortgage with a remaining loan balance of $100,000, your equity in the property is $150,000. Repeat home buyers usually rely to some extent on the equity in their current home to help buy their next home. The more equity you have, the larger the possible down payment for the trade-up home. Home equity also equals security, especially at the beginning of a mortgage loan, so little of your payment goes to principal that equity builds slowly. naturally, building home equity comes at a price, usually in the form of larger payments. If building home equity means incurring debt to make ends meet, then you’ve defeated the purpose of building equity in the first place. One way is to make additional principal payments. Additional principal payments make sense when you save more on your mortgage interest expense on an after-tax basis than you would earn on your investments on an after-tax basis. If you are able to deduct your mortgage interest from your income taxes and your marginal federal income tax rate is 27 percent or higher, then your after-tax cost of mortgage debt is between 3 and 4 percent. For instance, if you earn 4 percent pretax on a five-year CD, and you’re in the 27-percent bracket for federal income taxes, the after-tax return is less than 3 percent. Before you start making additional principal payments, use one of the many amortization calculators you can find on the internet to do the math - how much interest you would save if you made additional principal payments and how much it would shorten your loan and increase your home equity. 8
The other way to build home equity faster is to refinance. Recently, the reason most people have refinanced is to lock in a lower interest rate and/or lower their monthly payment. But you can also refinance to shorten the term of your mortgage, which builds equity. If you had a $200,000 30-year ARM at 8.13 percent and replaced it with a 15-year fixed rate loan at 6.75 percent, your monthly payment would go from $1,485.69 to $1,769.82. Most sellers use part of their equity to pay selling costs, such as brokerage commissions and transfer taxes. Also, if you are delinquent on your property taxes, or have other liens secured against the property, such as an Irs tax lien, these would have to be paid at closing.

say ah! Open wide! These are common phrases used by dentists across the country on a daily basis, but for 40 million Americans, the mere thought of these words sends a chill up their spine. Although pop culture has made dental anxiety a common theme for jokes, fear of the dentist is no laughing matter. For some, terrible childhood experiences have left a lasting impression on going to the dentist. Others have avoided the dentist for years because they are embarrassed of their teeth or their dental phobia. But avoidance can lead to devastating results. In many cases, patients avoid a check-up for so long that they put themselves at risk for oral disease and painful tooth aches that interfere with daily routines. Prevention is essential so that minor problems don’t become major problems. Thanks to anxiety-free dentistry, people with dental anxieties no longer have to look for excuses to cancel their dental appointment. Whether you require a single filling, need a root canal, or are looking for a complete smile makeover, sedation dentistry will help you achieve optimum dental health in the most comfortable way possible, often with no recollection of the visit. sedation dentistry

oral sedation (pills): safe, economical and convenient, this type of sedation delivers a more relaxed state than nitrous oxide. Oral sedation is highly effective for mild to moderate anxiety. This type of sedation is administered with a prescribed pill by mouth about one hour before your appointment to allow you to drift into a complete state of relaxation so you can have a worry-free dental experience. nitrous oxide (laughing gas): This method of anxiety-free dentistry allows you to relax during your treatment, and resume your normal activities after your appointment. nitrous oxide is best suited for cases of mild to moderate anxiety and is the most frequently-used sedation method. nitrous oxide is administered through a demandvalve inhaler over your nose that releases gas when you inhale. You will feel the effects within minutes and these effects are completely gone within minutes of the gas being turned off after your treatment.

A recent alarming statistic notes that the rise in heroin deaths among our youth living in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, roswell and other areas in north Fulton has increased over 300 times. I have represented numerous young people involved with drugs and drug activity, and it never leads anywhere good. If you think it is cool to be involved with drugs, the best case scenario for your life is staying alive and wasting an inordinate amount of time. The longer you stay involved with drugs, the greater your chances of being caught and spending time in jail. The worst case scenario of being involved in drugs is death. even if you live out the best case scenario, there will be times you will wish for the worst case scenario. If I could say anything to our teenagers and young adults it would be, “You are not invincible or immune to bad outcomes and consequences!” Your life is worth too much to waste it doing drugs. All of our choices and actions have lasting consequences. For instance, if you decide to study for a test, you will be better prepared for the test than if you decide not to study. What about your dreams? Decide to live a productive life filled with achievement, satisfaction, peace of mind and accolades. develop hope. You could be a doctor, engineer, teacher, small business owner, lawyer, professional athlete, dad, mom, uncle or aunt. There is so much more to life that is to be realized by someone in their late teens or early twenties. A life involved with drugs is nothing but a disappointment. There is not one successful and wealthy person who can credit their success to drugs, not one. 14

WHat not to bRinG:
no matter the harvest season length, the day inevitably comes when our beloved farmers, bearers of beets, shepherds of sugar snap peas, commanders of cantaloupes sadly pack up their produce in anticipation of winter. The joyful return of farm stands and farmers markets has become synonymous with spring and summertime, so to get ready for market season, here are some ways to make the most of your local farmers markets.
Pets. I know, I know, Mr. Pugglesworth goes everywhere with you. But most times, farmers markets have to ban furry friends (except service animals) due to health and safety laws.
WHo to buY FRom: eye the lines. Any stand with a line is probably worth checking out. If people are willing to wait for a certain farmer’s tomatoes, then they probably have some of the best.
HaVe a Plan: Make a list and do your best to stick to it. Treat this like a trip to the grocery store rather than a shopping spree. Abundant piles of vibrant vegetables may look beautiful, but do you need a bushel of heirloom carrots and a flat of lemon basil? Save one off-the-list splurge for those gorgeous sunflowers or a slice of artisan pie.
WHat to bRinG: A basket or a bag. no sense in wasting plastic and paper; bring your own reusable bag and save the vendors money. Plus, there’s a good chance a tote bag will be more comfortable to carry and more durable, too.
Vendors you know and trust. It makes sense to give your business to farms whose product you have bought and liked in the past.
aSK tHe VenDoRS queStionS: don’t see zucchini blossoms, but need them for a recipe? Ask the vendor you get your zucchini from if they have any available. There might not be a big enough demand to display a certain fruit or veggie, but they’ll likely bring what you ask for next week.
WHen to Go:
raid the piggy bank to make sure you have cash on hand. Though credit cards are becoming more widely accepted at produce stands and markets, many vendors still only take cash.
early! Farmers markets are abuzz in the early for one reason: patrons want to be sure they melons, herbs and corn from their favorite getting there early might not guarantee no lines, have the best selection to choose from.
A cooler. Many markets these days sell meats, cheeses, yogurt and eggs. You’ll want the cooler to keep items cold as you continue to shop.
spring, summer and fall. Most farmers markets are open into the early winter, selling items like squash, root vegetables, spices and canned items.
