Strengthening Relationships in Our Community By Amanda Epley

eet Milena Garcia and her children, and you will soon rediscover the true power of compassion. As a licensed therapist, Milena has devoted her life to helping others – and she has instilled this purpose in her children as well. Milena received her Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Columbia University and then became certified in Family Therapy by the Ackerman Institute. She has been a licensed clinician for 23 years, and she has helped people in family therapy centers, hospitals, schools, and private practice. She has been featured as an expert contributor on the Connect With Kids Network and Discovery Health. Milena currently works for the Atlanta Relationship Institute, a counseling practice in Sandy Springs. She is committed to strengthening families, improving marriages, and advocating for victims of abuse.
on preparing for her college entrance exams this year. In her free time, Talia enjoys going to concerts with her friends who share her passion for music. Maili, 14, is a creative eighth-grader with a flair for science. Her hobbies include art projects, baking, and making slime. She also loves playing basketball and spending time with her friends.
“Watching families grow and heal from difficult life circumstances is both professionally and personally fulfilling,” says Milena. She truly enjoys helping couples and children overcome traumatic experiences and move forward with newfound resilience. Milena has the unique capacity to empathize with others while providing insightful guidance to navigate even the most troubling times. Naturally, Milena has close relationships with her three children, Talia, Maili, and Jadon. Talia, 16, runs on her high school cross country and track teams, and she is also involved in the Beta Club and the Service Club. She is a strong student and is focused 4

Jadon, 10, is an artistic and athletic boy who enjoys playing all sports, from football, to baseball, to basketball – but tennis is his favorite sport by far. In just one year, he has risen from an unranked position to the Top 15 in his age group! As a first generation Cuban American, Milena takes pride in her heritage. She and her children speak Spanish at home, and they enjoy celebrating their culture together. Milena and her family love to travel, and some of their favorite places they have explored are Mexico, Aruba, and Alaska. They also enjoy visiting the beautiful beaches on the Florida coast during spring and summer breaks. Talia recently had an amazing opportunity to study abroad in Spain last summer. As Talia will soon enter her senior year of high school, she and her family have begun touring prospective colleges together as well. Milena moved from New York to Sandy Springs over sixteen years ago, and she feels at home here. She chose to raise her children in Sandy Springs because of the great schools, serene parks, and proximity to major highways. They appreciate the charm of smalltown life with big-city perks. On the weekends, you can find them shopping at the local farmers market, attending a concert at Chastain Park, or walking their dogs, Gypsy and Prince, around the Abernathy Arts Center. They are active members at a Christian church on Glenridge Drive, and they are quite involved in youth group and service projects in our community. As avid sports fans, Milena and her children love to cheer on any Atlanta team – unless they are playing against one of their favorite teams from New York! “We love our neighborhood in Sandy Springs,” says Milena. “It’s a fun place to live and a great place to raise kids.” v

Recipe Ideas
by Jordan King
1 bunch asparagus, cut in 2 inch segments ¾ pound snow peas 1 pound bowtie pasta ⅓ cup shredded parmesan or Romano cheese ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil salt & pepper Bring 4 quarts of water to boil on the stove. Drop in asparagus pieces and cook for 2-3 minutes. The asparagus will be nearly cooked. Remove asparagus with small colander or slotted spoon. While the water is still at a boil, add bow tie pasta and cook according to instructions. With 2 minutes left, add the asparagus and snow peas to the boiling pasta. Drain and dump back into the pot. Drizzle olive oil over the pasta and greens, add salt and pepper to taste and top with cheese. Any of your favorite veggies work! Add whatever is in season. Saving association money and putting it towards ways to improve your subdivision is important, so we create customized HOA sections, saving you time and money. Selecting the Right Real Estate Agent By Lucas Carter
How do you select a real estate agent?
W
hen I am on a listing appointment or meeting someone who is interested in hiring a real estate agent, I am often asked, “How are you different than all the others?”
244 PETERS STREET
A great agent is never afraid to answer this question. I love to respond by saying, “Everything I do is different!” That is when I smile and explain how I work. You need an agent who is focused and goal oriented. Choose an agent who will take on your needs and wishes as personal goals to ensure a successful outcome. The most vital part of interviewing a realtor is selecting an agent who understands the ins and outs of a transaction. Knowledge of the process and of a market area are the basics of the game. Having a written marketing plan, featuring professional photography, and utilizing technology are the trademarks of a true realtor. A property that has been properly prepared for the market place with a realistic sales price will produce real results! v

Technically, your body can accumulate and store enough vitamin D in the spring, summer, and fall through adequate sun exposure.
Sun: Smart
How to be
Vitamin D Sufficient By Emma Riehl
Everyone who deals with the dreaded season of winter has participated in the running joke of the long, sunless days wreaking havoc on our collective spirit. All humor aside, the thought that our moods are affected by the seasons is not far from fact. Vitamin D synthesis is triggered by ultraviolet B rays, or sunlight. According to a psychiatric study1, vitamin D deficiency in older adults leads to a higher risk of mood disorders and decreased cognitive functioning. The study even indicated a greater risk for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin D also plays a key role in preventing osteoporosis and maintaining bone health both in children and adults. It’s no wonder, then, why everyone seems happier in the summertime. More sun exposure leads to a better mood. However, if done properly, you can ensure that your body is vitamin D sufficient all year round.
Make it Soar: Building A Simple Kite
Here are some facts about vitamin D through sunlight: • Complete cloud cover reduces UV energy by 50%; shade (including that produced by severe pollution) reduces it by 60%2 • UVB radiation does not penetrate glass, so exposure to sunshine indoors through a window does not produce vitamin D3 • Sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 8 or more appear to block vitamin D-producing UV rays, although in practice people generally do not apply sufficient amounts, cover all sun-exposed skin, or reapply sunscreen regularly4 • Sunscreen is essential, but in the case of vitamin D sufficiency, forgoing sun protection for just your first 20 minutes of sun exposure is a good idea. Scientifically, you only need to be exposed to the sun for 5-30 minutes per day between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm in order to meet your daily vitamin D intake.
In the summer, this requirement is easily met. In the spring and fall, try and make it outside whenever you see a break in the clouds. For instance, go for a 15-minute walk in the afternoon or take your lunch breaks outside at work. Ideally, your body will have enough vitamin D stored in normal layers of body fat to make it through the winter. This is where it gets tricky. Older adults or those who cannot often leave their homes need to pay extra attention to sources of vitamin D. Because vitamin D is found in so very few foods, like the skin of swordfish, salmon, and tuna, a vitamin D supplement is more realistic. If you have additional questions, consult a dietary specialist. Now, go and take that much-needed break outside!

It is nice to have a recipe that I can walk away from after I put it together, especially during the holidays when time is tight and I am spending hours on end in the kitchen. There is no babysitting this irresistible dish!
