What Is Colour Coding? The use of colour coded cleaning tools in the food industry can assist greatly in reducing the risk of crosscontamination and ensuring compliance with the above principles. This methodical approach associates each product to a particular area, enabling interdepartmental or food type segregation. Also, by storing the tools off the ground and in a colour coded wall bracket, they will remain clean, last longer and be readily identifiable if missing.

How Salmon Hygiene Technology can help Salmon Products are completely colour coded. This means that the entire product is one colour. All products in the ‘Salmon Hygiene Technology’ line are available in up to nine colours. They are also fully compliant with all existing EU regulations and Food Safety Acts and are manufactured to the exacting standards expected of food contact surfaces and equipment, such as those set out in the US Food Code (part 4-101-11), so that they do “not allow the migration of deleterious substances or impart colours, odours or taste of food” and are safe, durable, corrosion-resistant and non-absorbent. “finished to have a smooth and easily cleaned surface” and to be resistant to “pitting, chipping, scratching, scoring, distortion and decomposition”. HBC strives to minimise adverse environmental impact at all stages of production. All the vegetable fibres used in our brushes are sourced from third world countries thus supporting their local communities. HBC has a FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) Chain of Custody certification (TT-COC-001562) for wooden brush backs and other wooden products. This means that the FSC raw material used to produce these wooden parts can be traced back to an FSC certified forest. The non-FSC timber used by the company comes from managed forests or from suppliers with other sustainable timber schemes (such as the German PEFC™ scheme). We encourage our customers where possible to change from buying brushes with fitted handles to threaded handles. Packaging is much smaller, reducing transport costs and carbon emissions. See our Boxed to Go product line on pages 9 – 11 for more information on our environmentally friendly threaded wooden brushware. HBC strives to use a minimal amount of packaging materials and complies with all EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) packaging waste regulations. BRUSH CARE & MAINTENANCE It is essential to maintain your hygienic tools to prolong their use and also to recognise when they need replacing. Hygiene is essential.

Procedures for cleaning hygienic tools 1. Remove all visible dirt and any foreign objects. Use a Salmon Hygiene Technology brush with stiff filaments to do so. 2. Clean the tool in a cleaning solution with a pH between 7.0-12.2. Alternatively clean in an industrial dishwasher (82°C/180°F). 3. Rinse with clean water. 4. If lime residues are formed on the tool after washing and use, these can be removed by washing in a cleaning solution with a pH between 7.0-12.2. Use a Salmon Hygiene Technology brush with stiff filaments to do so or clean in an industrial dishwasher (82°C/180°F). 5. Rinse with clean water. 6. If required, tools can be disinfected after washing with an approved disinfectant. Salmon Hygiene Technology products tolerate all approved disinfectants. 7. Rinse with clean water to ensure the removal of any disinfectant residues on the tool before using it again for cleaning. 8. If required, most Salmon Hygiene Technology products can be sterilised by autoclaving. Many products can be autoclaved at temperatures up to 134°C. Many of the items produced can be marked by hot branding, printing or labelling. There is a one-off charge for the production of special branding and printing plates, but hot branded names and numbers made up from available type blocks do not attract a set up charge. The maximum brand area is 90mm x 65mm, and the maximum print area is 70mm x 70mm. Four colour printing is available. Most products are manufactured in large batches on a three month cycle, therefore customers requiring products to be marked during manufacture should ensure that orders are placed well in advance. Most wooden stocks are made with hardwood from professionally managed estates, where timber is felled under Licence and replanted. Salmon Products has an FSC chain of custody accreditation (TT/COC/001562) and is able to make FSC timber products and brushes to order.
