collection 2016: sustainability and innovation For 2016, Skram adds 9 new products/groupings to its lineup. The new work is diverse but unified by a spirit of design innovation and uncompromising detailing. The release comes at an exciting time for the North American maker of heirloom quality furnishings. Skram operates on an aggressively sustainable model of manufacturing and last year commited to solar generation of the energy required to operate its facility. The 2015 completion of the first phase of the project provides roughly half of the total energy required to sustain the factory’s operation. The installation directly powers the machinery used to craft Skram’s range and it offsets the equivalent of over 30,000 pounds of coal and over 50,000 pounds of CO2 annually. Beyond being made with solar power, Skram’s new offerings for 2016 reflect a uniquely thoughtful and refined approach to modern design expressed in authentic, natural materials with unabashedly fine workmanship.

about the designer: Skram’s creative direction is led by A. Jacob Marks, named one of the top 50 young designers of the Americas (Young Designers: Americas, Daab). Marks has no formal training and is a self-taught designer and furniture maker. His work is rooted in a philosophy that argues for the inextricability of good design and fine workmanship. Distinguished for his graceful seating elements and austere casegoods and tables — unique in their negotiation of proportion, line and visual weight — Marks’ designs have garnered international praise and been showcased in a range of residential and commercial spaces throughout the world. collaboration: marks+logothetis This year, Marks teamed up with American procelain artist, Mimi Logothetis, in the development of Skram’s Arak Lighting Series. The translucent, beautifully inconsistent quality of Logothetis’ hand-forming techniques, along with the artist’s application of distinctive surface treatments and graphics, was the focus of the exploration. In the final products, Logothetis’ perfectly imperfect cylindrical forms glow–delicate and graceful–upon Marks’ thoughtfully designed, carefully proportioned bronze and aluminum armiture to striking effect.
about skram: Skram’s approach to manufacturing is rooted in the belief that the objects produced by a society are a reflection of the character and priorities of that society. The company seeks to promote an interpretation of sustainability that directly impacts not only what is produced, but also the mode of production. Thus, Skram brings the artisan back to the factory, producing objects on a scale that permits the fulfillment of volume orders without sacrificing the attention to detail expected by its customers. Quality, durability, restraint, utility—Skram furniture is a reflection of these resurgent American ideals. Leading by example, the company embodies an ethic that merges innovative, useful design with meticulous workmanship and an encompassing view of sustainability.
