DESIGN INTENT Collaborate with Architecture, Building Construction Science, Graphic Design, and Interior Design students to provide appropriate documents for a proposed renovation. The renovation will cover basement and lobby spaces of The Cobb Institute of Archaeology located on Mississippi State University’s campus. Museum in the basement lacks display space and signage. CONCEPT Inspired by the red clay used to make pottery, a complementary color scheme of oranges and blues is used against wooden textures. Respecting original architecture and demographics played important roles in design decisions. Black and white images add graphic detail throughout while serving educational purposes. DESIGN APPLICATION Bring in modern touches while retaining the building’s original elements to create more display and storage space. Museum research is used to accommodate as many artifacts as possible and institutional design research helps assure space for students. By re purposing these spaces, the museum will be a more integral part in the building. DESIGN INTENT Create open workspace for a realty and management firm that relies on a variety of seating and spaces to accommodate the needs of users. The company’s name and location, Denver, Colorado, is provided, but students must develop a brand. Students are instructed to design the spaces inspired by five zones: social zone, nomadic zone, meeting zone, resource zone, and resident zone. CONCEPT Taking the word ‘energy’ and breaking it down into 4 variations is the driving factor for the design of Next. Energy efficiency in the environment, a person’s energy level, the energy existing in every day objects, and the transfer of energy combine to inspire the space. Design elements include diagonal walls, vivid colors, use of sustainable resources, and variety of textures. DESIGN APPLICATION Design a community of spaces that allows employees to choose where they want to work throughout the day. Research helps implement the concept of unassigned desks in a functional manner. Each space varies with type of seating, level of privacy, function, and number of seats. To drive innovation, technology is incorporated using furniture, interactive screens, and virtual reality.

DESIGN INTENT Collaborate with teammates to design first, sixth, and eighteenth floors of an 18-story, boutique-style hotel in a city of your choosing. Develop an overall concept for hotel. Derived from the overall idea, more specific concepts will be used to design the restaurant, bar, spa, and rooftop bar. Custom branding must be provided for the hotel and each of the amenities the hotel offers. CONCEPT Coronado Island, located in San Diego, is known for its beautiful mica sand, driving the design for Mica Hotel. Mica is a silicate mineral, known as a sheet silicate because of its formation in distinct layers. The concept of layers is applied throughout through usage of overlapping, horizontal emphasis, and striped components. Varying properties of the mineral are used to drive the concept of each amenity within the hotel. DESIGN APPLICATION Use research of concept, San Diego, hospitality design, etcetera to acquire a functional space where guests can relax in luxury. Apply rich materials and residential aspects to create the boutique-hotel experience. Promote branding in each space while staying in touch with the overall concept. DESIGN INTENT Generate a restaurant design that embodies the culture and aesthetics of the country assigned. The city, name, and brand of the restaurant are available for designers to determine. An exterior must be provided in the overall design of the restaurant. CONCEPT The restaurant is located in Fukuoka, Japan, a city on the northern shore with a lot of water access, influencing the concept to evolve into a river and its properties. Traditional, Japanese forms with modern takes combine to create a comfortable eatery that challenges typical Japanese design. DESIGN APPLICATION Research the history / culture of Japan to name, brand, and design a restaurant that will welcome natives while offering a unique experience. Use of local materials are used for environmental and cultural purposes. Japanese meals can last a long periods of time. This is why Headwaters has soft lighting, comfortable seating, and soft fabrics. Individual Hand-Drawn Hand-Rendered
DESIGN INTENT Name, brand, and design a luxury accessory store located in a two-story building in Toronto, Canada. Branding is intended to accommodate the preexisting company’s aesthetic while bringing in individuality to the store itself. All renderings must be hand-drawn and hand-rendered. CONCEPT Evoque is where one can get away as if they are on vacation. Modern sleek meets classic while focusing on luxury. Contemporary shelving against back-lit onyx and crown molding tie together resulting in an extravagant design. Softer textures are seen downstairs while heavy woods set the tone for the Men’s Department on the second level. Escaping to Evoque will leave anyone on cloud nine when departing.
DESIGN APPLICATION Establish an open floorplan to maintain a simple and serene environment. Display cases and secluded shopping areas are scattered within the openness of the store to create intimate spaces. According to research, excellent customer service is critical in luxury brand shopping. This is why extra attention was placed on employee areas to assure a happy work environment and to boost productivity.

This project is intended to teach students about light design and components by building a table lamp, floor lamp, pendant, chandelier, etcetera that uses LED lamps. Building a guitar as a sculpture rather than an instrument using makeshift building components was the idea of this design. Functionality is added to the sculpture by making it a light source. The fixture may be wall-mounted or placed in a guitar stand for display.

The Box Project is intended to give students insight to woodworking and the processes that compose furniture. “McCobb Box” is inspired by the furniture of Paul McCobb and his mid-century modern style. Shapes were pulled from McCobb’s furniture to make a custom pattern that was drawn up in AutoCAD, traced onto the box, wood burned, and finished by filling in shapes with a variety of textures, stains, and finishes. The Reclaim Project challenges students to create a seat out of materials that are re purposed or salvaged from waste. The design of “Reliance” is inspired by human dependency on nature and promotes the message to recycle and use salvaged materials when possible. Constructed with scrap wood, the stool is made up of two right triangles sharing the hypotenuse side to form a unique design. The two sides conjoining to make the seat were constructed using smaller scrap pieces, resulting in a butcher block effect while the larger triangle is consisted of four triangles made out of 2”x4” boards.
