D’Lightful Diwali Diwali 2009 became an occasion for Indian Architect & Builder’s Social Studio to light up 22 government associated classrooms in Mumbai and the night study area of Horniman Circle garden under the patronage of IS Dance & Fitness Centre. The NGO supported were Pratham for the Night Schools and the Kalaghoda Association for the Horniman Circle Study Area. BACKGROUND Misplaced funding and negligence sometimes keep many public areas of the city short of night lighting. These zones are generally venues for young and old, under-privileged students to carry on their study activities. Besides these, this lighting shortfall is seen in many municipal schools which have late classes or classes held in dark rooms with poor light and ventilation. These light deficient spaces become dissuaders for these education starved individuals. THE IDEA Education is also metaphorically seen as the provider of LIGHT in our Lives. Diwali the festival of lights became as occasion for lighting up deficient education environments for the lower income group. The shady green umbrella of Horniman Circle garden becomes a rest area for many office goers and many professionals studying part time. Demarcated areas of the garden have sit-outs with night lighting where the students as a group or individually carry on their studies. However over a period due to shortage of funds some of these lights have not been maintained and other vandalized. The Social Studio team with financial support from IS Dance and Fitness Centre replaced the six halogens along with their protective caps which were damaged. Thus returning light to where the shadows had fallen.

22 Municipal Classrooms around Mumbai The Social Studio worked with the NGO Pratham to light up 22 Municipal classrooms around Mumbai this diwali. These classrooms fast needed a replacement of tube lights to allow their normal functioning. Again under the patronage of IS Dance and Fitness Centre Pratham identified the scools and Social Studio coordinated the provision of 60 tube lights that lit up the 22 class rooms around the city.
