STOCKPORT TOWN FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

A Welcome from Our Chairman

I

’d like to welcome you all here to Stockport Sports Village, home of Stockport Town FC, as we look ahead to this evenings Cheshire Senior Cup fixture against Cammell Laird in the First Round. I’d like to welcome our visitors today, Cammell Laird, and welcome their manager, Mick McGraa, to SSV as each clubs meets for the third time this season. I’d also like to wish them all the best for after today’s match, until our away fixture at the end of this month! Our Lions have suffered a run of bad form of late, especially in some of our recent home fixtures against Carlisle City and Holker Old Boys at SSV. However we return to our Monday evening fixtures tonight, following our Monday wins over Maine Road and Runcorn Linnets earlier in the season. Cup competitions has seen the squad put out some of the best performances of this current campaign and tonight I know Dave and the players will be fired up against a tough opposition in Cammell Laird, as well as some revenge following our last outing, a 2-0 loss in the LWC Drinks Cup. Last season saw a lot of change throughout the club but the second half of last season gave us a taste of what is to come under our manager, Dave Wild. Exciting and entertaining football is what every fan wants to see and all of us at the club know that Dave is taking this club in the right direction.

It has been just over a year since Dave took over at the club along with his management team, and I’d like to pay tribute to all he has done for the club since his arrival. The Lions are a side that we all know can beat anyone on their day, and the football that Dave has got the squad playing is that of excitement and the entertaining football that any football fan will enjoy. Making SSV a fortress for the team would be a great for the club this season and is what we have aimed to do throughout the campaign so far, and all of us at the club hope that you, our supporters, will be there cheering the team all the way throughout today’s fixture. It is at this time I’d like to say thank you to all of those involved at the club who have help Stockport Town get to where it is today, competitive in our league, drawing in new supporters every week, and providing entertaining football and matches week in, week out. I would like to take this chance to thank all of our sponsors who have come on board at the club, including Cordant Services and Service Sport. Finally, I’d like to thank Leemic Copiers for renewing and accepting to be our Shirt Sponsors for this 2017/18 season in the NWCFL. A Welcome From The Manager

A

s always cup competitions are a welcome break from league action, and our players know the importance of helping to continue building our reputation in local competitions.

this group of players we have is, and I know we will come out of the other side in a positive light.

This evening is another opportunity to further broaden the clubs reputation. With the likes of Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra still in the competition the chances of a plum tie and some increased revenue for the club is not an opportunity we will be taking lightly.

It’s upsetting that he decided to gain his starts at New Mills but I respect his decision and as I’ve told him I’ll always be here to support him and offer advice to what is a superb young talent and hopefully one day he will return to the Lions!

Having built a relationship with Mick this season i look forward to hosting him at SSV. He is certainly a manager that likes to play football the right way which will make for a good game.

It’s a real shame to lose a young player like Jack McConnell especially having invest such amount of time and effort in his personal development.

Up The Lions Stockport Town FC, First-Team Manager Dave Wild

As always the Liverpool Manchester rivalry will add spice to an already important game for both clubs. We’ve had a real poor run of form lately and it’s important we get back on the front foot and push some positivity into the club again and as always it stems from the results on the pitch.

Cammell Laird Club History

C

ammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers. The Club finished 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season of 1907/08. In the early years, the Club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy, the Shipley Cup, in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The Club had their most successful period during the 1970s and 80s, winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/95 saw the Club reach the FA Vase quarter-finals before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the Club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first Club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year as 06

that First Division triumph, the Club reached the FA Vase semi-finals, losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town, and two years later, the Club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the Club finished bottom of the Evo-Stik Division One North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play-off final against Trafford. Season 2013/14 saw the Club finish 11th, but the decision was taken to resign from the Evo-Stik League due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new Club was formed on 28th May 2014 and entered the NWCFL Division One for their debut campaign in 2014/15. In October, the Club lost manager Tony Sullivan to Witton Albion, and appointed Paul McNally in the same month. He ably guided the team to promotion, which was achieved on Saturday 4th April with a 5-0 win at Oldham Boro. In the end, Lairds finished 21 points clear of 3rd placed AFC Darwen. 2015/16 saw the Club finish 15th in

its first season in the NWCFL Premier Division. Early on, Lairds drew or even lost games that they largely dominated, but they soon found their feet in the Premier Division. Undoubtedly their best result was an emphatic 4-0 victory against eventual champions Colne in October. In February, Tony Sullivan replaced Paul McNally as manager, and Lairds eventually secured a solid mid-table finish. At the end of the season, Sullivan departed and was replaced by former Prescot Cables and AFC Darwen manager Neil Prince. The new manager made an excellent start, two fine performances seeing off the challenge of AFC Darwen in the FA Cup. Despite an opening day 4-3 defeat at New Mills, a match in which the visitors led 2-0 and 3-2, Prince’s new-look side appeared to be gelling together with a three game unbeaten run at the end of August. However, September saw a series of tough fixtures against some of the top sides in the division, and Prince resigned on good terms with the Club after a 3-1 reverse against Squires Gate.

terms of results, several performances perhaps deserved better and there was an acceptance that it was going to take time for such a youthful side to develop. Lairds’ displays improved significantly after the turn of the year, and everything finally came together on Saturday 18th March 2017 as they beat AFC Darwen 4-1 to record their first league win of the season. This was followed up three days later with a 2-1 victory against in-form Hanley Town. Ultimately, results elsewhere consigned Lairds to relegation by the end of March, but with a young, talented set of players and improvements off the pitch, the Club is now in a much stronger position ahead of the Division One campaign to follow in 2017/18.

Prince was replaced by former Lairds striker Mick McGraa, who had taken over the Reserve Team in the summer. McGraa worked tirelessly to assemble a very promising young side. Although Lairds struggled in STOCKPORT TOWN FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

Weekend round up - Saturday 13th January 2018

T

he first full fixture programme of 2018 provided plenty of entertainment, with a total of 81 goals across the 22 games. In the Premier Division, Runcorn Linnets continue to set the pace at the top of the table, extending their lead to 7 points with a 3-1 win over Congleton Town. The visitors had taken an early through Emini Adegbenro that they held until the 64th minute, when Daniel O`Brien equalised from the penalty spot. That prompted a Linnets revival, and two goals in as many minutes from Stuart Wellstead and Freddie Potter ensured the points remained at the Millbank Linnets Stadium. However, it wasn’t such a good afternoon for second placed Runcorn Town, who fell further behind in the title race after going down 4-0 at Padiham. Chief architect of Town’s downfall was Adam Freeland, who bagged a hat trick for the Storks. Widnes joined Runcorn Town on 51 points, after picking up a point in the 1-1 draw at Hanley Town. Neville Thompson had given Town a half time lead in the 33rd minute, but Ben Hodgkinson levelled for Widnes immediately after the restart. Charnock Richard remain in fourth place, and continued their good form with a 1-0 home win over Ashton Athletic, and almost inevitably leading scorer Carl Grimshaw notched the only goal of the game.

08

Biggest scorers of the day were Bootle, who slammed ten goals without reply past AFC Darwen at the TDP Solicitors Stadium. Ryan Cox scored a first half hat trick, Andrew Gillespie did likewise in a seven minute spell after the break, and Connor Millington moved the score into double figures with two gaols in the last two minutes. After three successive cup ties, 1874 Northwich picked up three points from their first league game of 2018 with a 4-1 win over AFC Liverpool at the St Lukes Barton Stadium. Goals from Taylor Kennerley, Ryan Mitchell and two from Scott McGowan in the final five minutes sealed victory for the Greens. Squires Gate continued their climb into mid-table with a 3-2 win over Abbey Hey at the Brian Addison Stadium, with Scott Harries grabbing a double and Gary Pett scoring the other for Gate. Former managerial mates Danny Craig and Steve Wilkes were in opposing dugouts as Barnoldswick Town and Northwich Victoria shared a 1-1 draw at the Silentnight Stadium, Mark Threlfall opening the scoring for Barlick while Oscar Dunino levelled for Vics in the 53rd minute. West Didsbury & Chorlton recorded their first hoem win since mid-October with a 3-2 victory in a ding-dong affair against Winsford United. Goals from Joseph Shaw, Ben Steer and an 89th minute winner from Ash Woods won the day for West, with Perry Bircumshaw scoring twice for the Blues.

STOCKPORT TOWN FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

A last minute winner from Connor Martin earned Irlam the points from a 2-1 win over Burscough, and Barnton shared a 3-3 draw with Maine Road at Townfield, with David Brown rescuing a point for Road with an 88th minute equaliser. In the First Division, the top five all recorded convincing victories, headed by Silsden AFC who maintained their 12 point lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 win at Daisy Hill. After Arley Barnes had given the Cobbydalers a half time lead, in form striker Joseph Gaughan struck twice in two minutes early in the second half to seal the victory. Litherland REMYCA remain in second place, and Colin Quirk was the star of the show in the 3-0 win over Carlisle City, scoring a quick fire hat trick in the space of four second half minutes. Third place Prestwich Heys won by the same score at Abbey Hulton United, with Rio Wilson-Heyes, Ashley Stott and Alfie Belcher on target for Heys. Alsager Town in fourth place also recorded a three goal winning margin, in their case a 5-2 win at Bacup Borough, with assistant manager Michael Lennon and Jordan Erdman both scoring twice. Whitchurch Alport recorded their seventh win in succession with their 3-1 victory at Chadderton, Lee Pickerhill scoring twice, and AFC Blackpool occupy the final play off spot despite going down 2-1 at bottom of the table Nelson. Two goals in two minutes just after the break from Daniel

Mort saw the Admirals through to victory. Cammell Laird 1907 are now just one point behind AFC Blackpool after their 3-0 win up at Holker Old Boys. Mark Bainbridge, Joshua Maldon and Ben Holmes were the Lairds’ target men. Three weeks ago Sandbach United lost 3-2 at St Helens Town, but extracted revenge with a 1-0 defeat on home soil that was clinched by a Matthew Pearson goal on 11 minutes. New Atherton LR manager Warren Jones made a winning start to his reign, with goals in each half from Gary Grier and Ashley Woodhead earning his side a 2-0 win over Stockport Town. Second half goals from Jack McConnell and Edward Driver earned New Mills a 2-0 win at Cheadle Town, and Serkari Ahmadi, Thomas Wakefield and Louis Downs were on target for Eccleshall in the 3-0 home win over FC Oswestry Town.

Lions 0-1 Carlisle City - Report

S

tockport Town suffered their second loss in a week as Carlisle City left Stockport Sports Village 1-0 away winners on Saturday afternoon in the Hallmark Security League. After a 4-2 away defeat at New Mills on Boxing Day, the Lions showed little creativity on Saturday, especially when Carlisle took the league after half-time through David Renyard. The loss also brings an end to Town’s unbeaten run of nine home matches that began at the start of October. Saturday’s defeat saw Carlisle leapfrog Stockport in the Division One table, with the Lions dropping to 10th position as City jump above them into 9th. The match got of to an exciting start for both sides, as Carlisle put early pressure on the Town defence, with Ryan Errington coming close with a dipping effort that landed just over Dylan Forth’s crossbar. At the other end, the Lions had the chance to take an early lead as Ben Halfacre received the ball on the edge of the penalty area. The towering striker turned and struck a first-time shot on goal, beating Michael Ballantyne in the City goal, but not beating the crossbar as the ball was soon cleared by the visitors. Robert McCartney came close next in the 22nd minute of the game. The Carlisle winger cut inside from the right before trying a shot with the outside of his boot but the ball fell on the wrong side of Forth’s far post. The Lions saw through a lull 10 minute period in the first half, and eventually found their shooting boots again in the 36th minute as

youngster, Jack McConnell, had an effort from just outside the box well saved by Ballantyne. On the stroke of half-time the Lions came close one again to taking the lead at the break, this time McConnell turned provider as he played in Jamie Hinchliffe on goal but Ballantyne was there to save his side again and keep the scores level at the break. The second half got off the the worst possible start for the Lions as just three minutes after the restart Carlisle had taken the lead. McCartney used his pace and trickery to find space on the right channel before passing across goal to find Renyard to tap in from close range. With the Lions falling behind once again at home, as they had against Atherton LR earlier in December, they knew they had the quality to fight back once again and they came close in the 53rd minute through Luke Hincks, but his headed effort dropped just over the bar. However Carlisle were more than happy to sit back and soak up any pressure that Stockport offered them going forward, and that effectively was the story until the 84th minute. Substitute Treyvon Simpson, out on the left wing, picked up the ball near the halfway line and raced free of the Carlisle defence and found himself cutting inside on goal, but rather that take his chance to shoot, Simpson offered to pass across goal for a tap in, but no one was there for Town! The visitors had been given their warning from Simpson’s mishap and sured up their defensive duties in the final five minutes. That ended up being enough to help them see out the game and take home a valuable three points from SSV.

Lions 1-3 Holker Old Boys - Report

S

tockport Town suffered their third consecutive defeat as they lost 3-1 at home to Holker Old Boys in the Hallmark Security League last Saturday. The defeat, at Stockport Sports Village, means the Lions have now shipped eight goals in their last three outings in the league, including four against New Mills at the end of last year. Goals from Holker’s Danny Keenan, John-Paul Stanway and Nathan Reid, was enough to see off the Lions, despite Conor Downes grabbing a goal back before half-time. The match got off to the worst possible start for the home side as Town conceded inside the first minute as Keenan slotted his shot past Dylan Forth in the Lions goal. Stockport tried to hit back immediately and came close to an equaliser but Ben Halfacre’s effort on goal was deflected into the side netting of Christopher Pearce’s post. Later in the half Halfacre came even closer as his header met Lee Constantine’s cross but was saved

well by Pearce. Things went from bad to worse as the Stags doubled their lead in the 30th minute as Stanway played against the Lions high defensive line, timing his forward run well and beating the offside trap before sliding the ball past Forth. As half-time approached Town got themselves back into the game after some tremendous build-up play in the Holker half, the ball ended up at the feet of Downes as struck a sweet strike into the top corner of Pearce’s goal. The second half saw the Lions pile more and more pressure onto Holker as they search for an equaliser and Aaron Dwyer came close with a driven shot from the edge of the area, however Pearce was prepared as he saved well. With the match looking as though Town were going to get back into the game, and maintaining possession well, the Stags hit on the counter attack once again and regained their two goal lead as Reid was on hand to fire home a third for the visitors.

Player Profile - Ezequiel Miranda

E

zequiel António Gomes Miranda, born in Portugal on 17th October 1993, and left-back for Stockport Town Football Club. Known by his teammates as ‘Izzy’, he started his footballing career at the young age of 8 years old back in his country of birth, Portugal. Miranda joined Stockport Town in December last year during a squad reshuffle following a change of management at the Lions, with Dave Wild coming in to take the reigns and brought Izzy in as his left-back/ wing-back. Speaking with Miranda, the Lions has been positive with results so far this season for the club. He said: “It’s been good up to this point, the club has had some ups and downs but we’ve had good performances overall. “We should not have lost the first game [against Litherland Remyca], but it was a new team, sometimes it takes time for us all to gel as a unit.” Miranda was decisive when asked about what his aspirations were for himself and the club, he added: “My aspirations especially this year, is to win the league, and to go as far as I

can in football.” On working with boss, Dave Wild, Izzy continued: “It’s been a pleasure working with him and with the staff. I have known Dave for a long time and I could not ask for more, his commitment for the club and for the team is unquestionable. “The main target for this season is promotion, definitely. My personal target is to keep as many cleansheets as I can, but also have a good run of games. I want to win a bet as well, with Daryll Grant, on who scores more goals and gets more assists this season. Away from football Miranda is a fan of playing golf as well as card games. When asked about the importance of Stockport’s home form this season, he responded: “This will be important to the team and for the club, and it will have a massive impact on our season. “If we keep working together as a team, our fortress will be hard to break.”
