WELCOME
TO THE SKYE FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL 2019 The Skye Food & Drink Festival is a celebration of the premium food and drink produced on the Isles of Skye and Raasay and surrounding areas of the north west Highlands of Scotland. This year’s festival takes place across six days from 24 to 29 June at venues in Broadford, Duisdale and Portree and features a special seafood-themed launch with celebrity chef Ready, Steady Cook, high tea and sea shanties; a two-day artisan producers’ market; a fourday Island-wide Festival Food and Drink Trail; cookery demonstrations, masterclasses, music, fun, foraging and festivities.
THE FESTIVAL MARKET
Taking place in Broadford Hall on 28 and 29 June, the Festival Market provides a showcase for our talented artisan producers, both local and visiting. Make your way around the variety of stalls displaying the amazing abundance, variety and quality of food and drink produced on this unique Hebridean Island. From whisky, gin, wine and beer producers, meat, fish, chutneys and bread, to chocolate and wild venison charcuterie, the artisan producers market is a delight to the senses. There will be opportunities to taste and buy, live music and a family-friendly cèilidh dance on the Saturday night will see the festival out for 2019. The market will include an artisan café brought to the festival by Ardvasar’s popular Café 1925.
THE FESTIVAL FOOD TRAIL
For this year’s Festival, we have suggested a Food and Drink route for culinary visitors to discover just why Skye is considered by many to be a Gourmet Island and a foodie’s paradise. This is a chance to meet and greet the people behind the produce, try, taste, buy and experience. See pages 10 to 13 for more details. Take a look at the festival website and social media @skyefooddrink and our hashtag #eatdrinkskye for more festival news and announcements. Don’t forget, we are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so please follow us. PAGE 3 TICKETS WWW.SKYEFOODANDDRINKFESTIVAL.CO.UK
FESTIVAL COMMUNITY Our community features strongly within the festival and we work with Flourish at the Growers Hub in Broadford, a group of like-minded people who get together to garden for health and wellbeing. Award winning dinner lady Annette Burfoot and the pupils from Broadford Primary School will be preparing and serving a special afternoon tea for the over 60s. Our festival ends on a high note with a traditional family cĂŠilidh for all the communities and visitors.
FLOURISH AND GROW Flourish is a land-based project bringing people of mixed ability together to help each other experience the mental and physical benefits of working with nature and growing and eating your own food. The group is based at Broadford Community Allotments which is home to many projects including Men's Shed, West Highland College, Schools Projects and a new forest school. Flourish is working with the festival to build an edible sculpture to be showcased at Broadford Hall during the festival market days. The group meets every Tuesday to plan the sculpture, sow seeds and care for the plants and herbs which will make up the sculpture. The group, led by Judy Finlay, provides a wonderful safe environment for folk to work together, make new friends and enjoy the huge benefits of growing. Anyone interested should pop into the allotments any Tuesday morning and will be made most welcome.
