Around 80% of those accused of being a witch were women. Women were thought to be more susceptible to sin, which was an idea influenced by the Bible and the character Eve.

Loyal pets such as cats, toads and spiders were often thought to be a demon in animal form who aided the witch in devil worship.

It was unusual for a woman to be independent in a heavily male dominated world.

At a time where life expectancy was 40 years, being elderly became suspicious.

2. TEST THE WITCH

SWIMMING The accused were tied by hand and foot and thrown in the water. If they sank, they were innocent but if they floated, they were guilty of being a witch.

WEIGHING The accused were weighed against a bible. If they outweighed it, they were innocent, but subject to more testing.
