lets play dressups! Here are a couple of suggestions on ways to make up your wardrobe for your photo session. 1. Try to make sure everyone is in dark or light tones, but not the same colour. ( Remember that white will blend in with the white walls if you are doing a studio session. ) Mixing it up a bit, while still creating a pleasing overall combination, creates a considerably more interesting image than having you all in black or white ever could! 2. Or choose items for the entire family as if you were creating one outfit. If all of your choices were somehow on one person, would the result be pleasing, colorwise? A handy trick for those who are hesitant to break away from the monochrome palette is to choose one patterned item (for example a print dress for yourself or your daughter) and then select the rest of the family’s clothing from colors within that pattern. 3. Or pick a colour palette, with two main colours and then you can mix in black, white or denim. This works best with a mix of patterns and layering of textures.
kids sessions
From tutus to cowboy boots, pretty much anything goes. Try to bring two outfits if you can, more if you have them, as it gives us more oppurtunity to mix and match with props and such. For a more styled session, think of the feel, style or theme you are trying to create. Retro, vintage, colourful? Think about how you want to remember your kids right now. Some dress up clothes can be great, but a full dress up outfit straight from the rack can be too much. Also think about a prop or two you may have that could match. Vintage and classic styled toys are great, but newer modern style toys are best left at home. Layering, colour and texture look great on kids. Dont forget to accessorize.
siblings Wardrobe choices for sibling shots, like those for family images, should be complementary but far from “a matching uniform.” A tried and true formula for a boy/girl sibling duo includes a patterned dress or skirt for the girl, with the boy in a solid shirt pulled from that pattern. If the little girl is wearing a solid shirt with a patterned skirt, have the boy’s top match a different color in her skirt, so that their shirts don’t match precisely. Trust me, it works! While many parents have the urge to put their boys or girls in the exact same outfit mixing it up will show their personality off much better, and result in more pleasing pix.
tips and tricks! You want to show off the personality of each family member, your family is unique so let your outfits show that. Avoid big logos and text on shirts. They take attention away from your face. Try to bring two outfits for the kids if you can as this gives me a choice to mix and match with props etc. You are welcome to bring as many outfits and accessories as you wish, but I dont guarantee that we will be able to use them all. Details like fingernails and toenail paint are important, especially if you go barefoot in the studio. Dont forget nice shoes that fit properly, and please, no crocs or sneakers. Hair cuts should be at least a fortnight before the session so they can grow in properly. Make sure clothes fit properly for the session. Pants that are always falling down are a bit distracting. Nappy covers under little girls dresses and skirts are essential, the cutest shot can be ruined if you can see the nappy. If you use leggings go footless unless you have shoes. Try to keep sibling outfits “seasonally matching For example, dont have one child in long pants and a jacket and the other in a summer dress.
