Grand Lake: ‘Best water on earth’ Community project would market town water for charity T ONYA BINA tbina@skyhidailynews.com

GRAND LAKE — Grand Lake Trustee Elmer Lanzi has spearheaded a way to better market the town’s squeaky clean tap water. Grand Lake is first in line to the source of its water, which is collected from the town’s two wells that draw off a relatively shallow aquifer that flows under the town from north to south toward the lake. The mountain water filters through what is believed to be a 50,000-year-old alluvial, and it is always at a cool 50 degrees, according to Grand Lake Water Superintendent Dave Johnson. “The aquifer is so clean, it doesn’t hardly add anything to the water,” he said, meaning ground water is nearly mineralfree. “It’s so low in mineral content it doesn’t conduct electricity, that’s pretty pure,” Johnson said. Jo h n s o n k n ow s o f o n l y o n e o t h e r Colorado town with water that doesn’t conduct electricity: Leadville. At 10,120 feet in elevation, Leadville gets its surface water from as high as 12,000 feet by way of Evans Creek, said Greg Teter of the

Parkville Water District. Because of the lack of dissolved solids in the water, water operators had to increase voltage on probes in the plant for lack of conductivity, Teter said. And much like the Tow n of Grand Lake’s ground and surface water, which could be traced to the Tohahutu drainage from high mountain lakes on the Continental Divide in Rocky Mountain National Park wilderness, Leadville’s water has ver y little chlorine added — a small amount is required of utilities by law. Johnson said that compared to most surface-water communities, Grand Lake uses “almost nothing” to treat its water. “It has no taste,” Johnson said. Some people who are accustomed to heavily

treated drinking water are thrown off by the lack of taste in Grand Lake’s water, he said. “Water is not supposed to have taste.” Lanzi and Johnson, with the help of the PTA and Grand Lake student Sean Irish, presented on Monday, May 9, to the town board a proposal for marketing the town’s tap water to attract more visitors to town and to discourage the use of disposable water bottles. Lanzi was inspired by the tow n of Aspen, where officials there introduced marketing town tap water in March. Grand Lake’s marketing scheme could, in part, become a fundraiser for local organizations, in this case the Grand Lake Elementary School’s PTA. A poster designed to be displayed in local businesses, at town hall and at the Grand Lake Visitor’s Center boasts “Tonahutu Blue” water for its “vitality, vigor, purity.” Organizers have proposed a logo of a water droplet with the identity “Tonahutu Blue.” This logo, which may be copyrighted by the town, could be etched on water bottles. Good Neighbors

Helping a friend in need Staff at the Neighbors Grand Park CommuGood nity Recreation Center would like to nominate Slade Bridgeman for the good neighbor award. Assistant Director Susan Cahill writes: “Since we opened the center, we’ve often witnessed Slade, as well as Ben Schemel, bringing Al Vance, a sightimpaired local patron, to the center to walk the track, work out and even getting in the pool to help guide him through a water fitness class. Although both of these gentleman are employed by the Recreation District, they conduct this act of generosity voluntarily on their own time. We decided to nominate Slade when we recently witnessed him riding Al to the recreation center on a tandem bicycle! What a wonderful opportunity for Al to feel the joy of “riding” on a bike on a warm day… a simple pleasure that many of us take for granted. To Slade, Ben and all those that generously give their time to help out Al, thank you.”

Proud angler Jasmin Bambur of Granby caught a 24-inch rainbow trout in the Fraser River by the bridge and fire station in early May.

The area’s lakes and rivers are yielding big catches during the spring thaw. Anglers from Granby and Grand Lake are reporting whopper lake trout being taken from shallower waters now set free from winter’s hold. “Springtime is traditionally a really good time of year for fishing, said Hot Sulphur Springs Colorado Division of Wildlife Aquatic Biologist Jon Ewert. “It’s one of the only times of year anglers can catch really large lake trout in shallow water near the shore. Fish remain mostly dormant during the winter for survival, then come springtime when the ice melts away and surface waters become warmer, their feeding intensifies. Because the ice came off of Lake Granby later than normal this year, Ewert predicts good fishing conditions should keep up until at least early June. “We’ve been catching some pigs, said Lake

Granby angler Steve Brenner, of the Granby area, “and we still have a couple good weeks of really good fishing. Right after the ice is off is definitely the best time. Brenner said he counted as many as 50 boats on Lake Granby on Saturday, May 14. “People are so excited this time of year. Anglers have been reporting fishing catches in the 35-inch to 37-inch range out of 4 feet of water in as recent as May 17. On Grand Lake, “deep-diving rapalas and crank baits fished in about 20-feet of water have been producing 20, 30, 40 pound lakers, said Doug Birkhole, a fishing guide from Rocky Mountain Outfitters, Grand Lake. The cold snowy temperatures combined with a large volume of water that was moving through the channel of Shadow Mountain Lake into Grand Lake “pushes the bait into the flats and causes the big fish to come up, said Outfitters owner Jim Gasnor. Although sport anglers enjoy catching these unusually large fish, most choose to release them. Fat content of such fish can render rather

Mid-range sized fish between 16 inches to 22 inches are deemed best for eating. The population of these sized lake trout is booming in Lake Granby, according to Ewert. “They’ve been very successful spawning the last two years, he said. For 16-inch to 22-inch Mackinaw, “We encourage people to harvest the bag limit. Ewert said, which is four per person. “We need that to keep the lake in balance, he said. — Tonya Bina can be reached at 970-887-3334 ext.19603.

Three Lakes mussel inspections resume TONYA BINA tbina@skyhidailynews.com

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has not found any confirmed evidence of Zebra mussel life in the Three Lakes Area since microscopic organisms were found a few years ago. “There hasn’t been a positive test result since 2008, said local DOW Aquatics Biologist Job Ew e r t, w h o h e a d s u p l o c a l efforts to control the invasive species. Each year when the lakes reach about 54 degrees, DOW crews capture plankton to find signs of the species. Larva can be found long before colonies of adults since a few adults can produce hundreds of thousands o f l a r v a e. A f e w y e a r s a g o, veligers — the larval form of zebra mussels — were found in the Three Lakes of Grand County. But annual testing since that discovery has come up negative, Ewert said. Dive teams have also spent time searching for adult colonies, but have not found any. After five years of no positive results, the DOW would downgrade lakes from “positive to “suspect. It’s the hope of aquatic biolo-

gists that the mussels may not be resilient to high altitude lake conditions. The veligers found in Granby reservoir and Grand Lake were found “in the highest elevation place in the whole world, Ewert said. A short growing season, cold water temperatures and a lack of calcium may mean the mussels won’t survive, or at least flourish as they do in lower elevation lakes. “It’s really hard to say, Ewert said. “It’s not a situation that has happened before. Regardless, lake inspections are continuing, with DOW stations at area boat ramps starting this Friday, May 20. DOW officials remind boaters to ensure boats are “clean, drained and dry when transporting from one fresh water body to another. Water in live wells can slow inspections considerably. Z e b ra mu s s e l s a n d t h e i r cousins the Quagga mussels are native to the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, though have been moved to numerous locations in Europe and North America, according to the species profile on the Colorado Division of Wildlife website. The species can wreck aquatic food chains

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER Boating season gets underway as temps increase and snow begins to melt BY JANICE KURBJUN jkurbjun@summitdaily.com

With the flows coming up on Colorado rivers, rafts, kayaks, trailers and more are starting to appear, perched on vehicle roof racks as they barrel toward the put-in. On Saturday on the Arkansas River, weather moved in for the afternoon, snowing on boats running the Numbers, drizzling on groups putting in for Browns Canyon, and gusting upstream against those finishing an afternoon at Hecla Junction. But even the unpredictable weather — by contrast, it was warm and sunny on Friday afternoon — didn’t divert kayakers and rafters who’d already loaded their boats and made the drive south for the weekend. Nor did it divert the laughter and fun that makes up a river adventure. “Once you set shuttle, there’s no turning back,” Breckenridge local Carla Cammarata said. Dark clouds had crested the Collegiate Peaks to the west by the time she and her group dropped off their vehicles, tempting them to come up with an alternate plan for the day. But the wave trains that form as the river flows through Browns Canyon at 800 cubic feet per second beckoned, and the group launched anyway. During the group’s Saturday adventure, the weather continued to change as evening approached. After morning sun changed to midday showers and afternoon wind gusts blew up, they were greeted with massive, wet snowflakes after the

River Flows Stretches of the Blue and Arkansas rivers are at an ambling “medium” rating, according to EddyFlower.com, a go-to site for those boaters looking for the best — or most appropriate — nearby run. From Buena V ista through Browns Canyon, the Arkansas River flowed at a forgiving, though higher-than-average, 800 cfs through the weekend. The river is “low,” but raftable (770 cfs), at the Class V- Pine Creek and Class IV Numbers runs on the Arkansas River. The Upper Colorado River stretch at Pumphouse near Kremmling is running “high,” at what’s been a pretty steady 3,500 cfs to Sunday’s 4500 cfs. That’s still not quite at the record maximum of 6,780 cfs in 1984, but it’s well above average for this time of year. Clear Creek and Ten Mile Creek are still “too low” for river running, the site says. At about 100 cfs, they are also below their historic averages for this time of year. campfire got roaring. “These snowflakes are huge! We have silver dollars falling on our faces,” one camper exclaimed, adding his excitement that the snowpack, which could sustain ideal flows on the rivers this year, continues to grow. As they rigged a tarp between two trucks and turned up the tunes, they gathered under the makeshift shelter, watching snowflakes sizzle in the fire.

It’s commercial, too Private boaters aren’t the only ones enjoying quiet days in small groups on the river. This week and weekend, Browns Canyon saw some traffic from several companies. The Buena Vista and Cañon City areas are largely servicing the early season commercial crowd as it slowly picks up. One, two and three-boat trips dotted the stretch of river at different times this weekend, and Performance Tours tallied numbers high enough to send five boats out on Tuesday and nine boats on Thursday last week.

“For the locals who are looking for an adrenaline rush, it’s going to be a great season. They’re going to want to come early,” he said, adding that things should tame down but be sustained later in the summer. “We should have no problem getting through Labor Day weekend with good flows.” Beyond the question mark about expected temperatures, la Nina precipitation patterns are playing a role in early season business. But even the National Weather Service isn’t sure how spring temperatures and precipitation patterns will play out as la Nina tapers off toward June.

Grand Countians not immune to RWI A

cross the United States health officials are warning about recreational water illness (RWI) because summer is the time people swim in outdoor pools, lakes, rivers and the ocean. In Grand County, people should be aware of RWI.For starters, many locals and visitors continue to swim in indoor pools. TAMI GRIFFITH And it's worth CFNP-BC re m e m b e r i n g that 10 years ago the beach in Grand Lake was temporarily closed over concerns about levels of bacteria in the water at the Grand Lake beach. RWI is a type of illness that causes ear infections and other water-related disorders. It's caused by bacterial, viral or fungal contamination of water-from lakes, pools, rivers, oceans, and hot tubs. Chemicals in the water or the lack of certain chemicals in the water can be a contributing factor. Diarrhea is the most common RWI due to contamination by such bacteria as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Norovirus, Shigella and E. Coli strains. Children, pregnant females, and those with a weakened immune system are

the most vunerable to this illness. There are ways to avoid RWI or becoming ill with this disorder. Think twice about getting in a pool if there are many infants or small children in the water. Do not swallow water, whether it is water from a hot tub, pool, lake, river, or the ocean. Avoid getting water in your mouth. Do not swim if you have diarrhea or any vomiting. Shower with soap before swimming and use good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs to others. Take small children to the bathroom often while swimming and check swimming diapers often as well. Another issue that faces many individuals is “Hot Tub Rash. A few days after soaking in a hot tub, pool or lake, the person notices portions of their skin being red and itching. The area most affected is the skin covered by a bathing suit. Blisters and pus may be noted as well. This is usually due to a bacterial infection. The contaminated water comes in contact with the skin for a long period of time. This is often due to inadequate chlorination. Avoid this disorder by removing your bathing suit and showering with soap and water immediately after getting out of the water.

Consumption of disposable plastics has spiraled out of control. Get this — Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour! If every American household recycled just one out of every ten HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles they used, we'd keep 200 million pounds of the plastic out of landfills every year. Plastic is a petroleum-based material that the Earth cannot digest. Every bit of plastic ever created still exists except the small amounts that have been incinerated and turned into air pollution. Recycling plastic is one solution, but also consider following the “4 Rs of Sustainable Living: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Here are some simple steps to help you get started:

• Become mindful of each purchase you make that contains plastics that will quickly end up in the landfill. Start with awareness and say no to plastic. • Use stainless steel (NOT aluMARIE HEDRICK minum) or glass bottles instead of plastic. Swimmer’s Ear Swimmer's ear (Otitis Externa) is a problem for many children during the summer season. Children may complain of an earache, tenderness with manipulation of the auricle or tragus and drainage may be noted. The ear canal itself may be inflamed and red. Normally, ear wax protects the ears from water, bacteria, and injury. If extra cleaning of the canals occurs and scratches to the skin occurs, infection can develop. After swimming, water may remain in the ear canal and this enables germs to grow. Immediately after swimming, rotate head gently from side to side to release excess water in the canals. Use a blow dryer on the low heat setting, holding it at least 12 inches from the ear and blow the air towards the ear. Ear plugs for swimming may help as well as long as they do not cause any skin irritation inside of the ear. Treatment for swimmer's ear can involve using antibiotic or antifungal drops as directed. This can be very effective. People with swimmer's ear should avoid swimming for 7-10 days. Enjoy the start of summer in Colorado and keep your family healthy.

GUEST COMMENTARY

STOP IN FOR FLOWERS, BALLOONS AND GIFTS!

A plea to river lovers BY JOY ELLIOTT Special to the Sky-Hi News

Calling all fisherman, river rafting enthusiasts, and all other parties that enjoy, love, and utilize the river for recreational activities. We are beckoning you all for comments to help protect our rivers, and their resources, specifically the Fraser and Colorado Rivers. The Colorado Wildlife Commission is responsible for establishing the State of Colorado's official position on the mitigation needed to address the impacts of the Moffat Firming Project. Our opinions, comments, and views are very important in making sure that all sides are heard. The Moffat Firming Project proposes to divert another 20 percent of the Fraser River during it's high flow period to the other side of the divide, to Denver, and other areas of the front range. Unfortunately, that water is being used primarily for irrigation purposes, not for drinking water. That water is being used to sustain Kentucky blue grass and other nonnative grasses in a very dry, high desert environment. What a huge waste of our natural resources. Because Denver and surrounding areas receive low amounts of precipitation, especially in the last decade or so, all of their cities and districts should be concentrating on water conservation. Watering the concrete is not a valid use of our mountain streams. This would make all of us better Americans. Denver's Environmental Impact Statement claims that removing the river's high flows will have no impact. In reality, it has a huge

impact on declines in sculpin populations and stonefly and macroinvertebrates populations. Without these spring flows, the excessive sediment collection builds up on the river bottoms, making it difficult for trout populations to get food. The river becomes constricted. With these decreased flows, the oxygen-robbing algae blooms suck the life out of the river. Look at the impacts of that on Grand Lake water clarity in the last decade. The river will then exceed the state standards of high stream temperatures. Whirling disease and the proliferation of other invasive species decreases the quality and quantity of life in the trout populations. The wildlife Commission needs to know that there will be impacts, huge impacts, on our lifeline — the rivers of Grand County — and all other mountain rivers that have increased their diversions to sustain the increasing populations to Denver and the front range. If it was for drinking water, the fight would be diminished for sustainability of life. But, that is not the case. Maybe someday, our goals to conserve water, have healthy wetlands, healthy rivers, and a healthy way of life for all of us, no matter what side of the divide you live on, will be important to all of us. I thank the commission for their efforts in standing up for Colorado's rivers. Here are some of my suggestions for mitigation for these water issues. Longer periods of higher stream temperatures, and lack of flushing flows are both issues that need to be addressed through mitigation. In the years of 1999-2004,

Read the newspaper page by page. the river levels were dismal. Very few water restrictions were in place, and fires were raging on the front range. The upper Colorado was warm, flows heightened at 1200 c.f.s.- 2,500 c.f.s., and ran most of the summer at 500 c.f.s. or lower. These levels were detrimental to the state of the Colorado headwaters, and the Fraser was listed as the third most endangered river for 2005. We should have a robust stream monitoring program paid for by diverters. For those who use an excessive amount of water for irrigating plants, trees, many nonnative, and unfortunately concrete sidewalks, those customers should pay higher amounts for excessive water use. We should also have a comprehensive, adaptive plan that can change as our rivers do. A solution might be an escrow fund that covers costs of future unseen impacts. Both the headwaters of the Colorado and the entire Fraser River have huge impacts on streams further down the water pathways. They are closely related in how these projects affect our future water sources. We have until May 26 to write comments, concerns, and letters to the Wildlife Commission to let them know that there w ill be impacts, and they will be deadly. What mitigation will be required to “Save the Fraser River”?

May is National Senior Health & Fitness Month. To improve your health and well-being, take advantage of Grand County Senior Nutrition Program. Diets, as we know them in the traditional sense, (i.e. caloric or food restrictions) simply do not work. Being successful at weight loss is never about placing unsustainable restrictions on you. If you have been on various diets in the past, remember that you were most likely unable to stick with the plan for very long, and once you stopped the plan, you regained the weight. If you just came across a “new diet plan to try, and think this will finally be the one that works, think again. It’s very hard to stop giving into the dieting mindset altogether, but I encourage you rethink your ideas about weight loss and approach this difficult task in a new way. Keep your eating clean: Clean eating is not a diet but more a way of life. It is based on the idea that the best way to eat is to abundantly enjoy whole foods. Whole foods are as close to their natural state as you can get them. In other words, the processing of the food is minimal. Clean eating calls for eating

more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins instead of pre-packaged, processed foods or fast food. Saturated fats are replaced with the healthy fats found in foods such as nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Fruits & Vegetables: Choose fresh produce over canned fruits and vegetables or juices. Use Whole Grains over Processed Grains: Brown rice, quinoa, bulgur, barley, or whole grain bread are just a few examples of how you can incorporate more whole grains. Limit use of refined grains as much as possible. A clue that a grain product has been refined or processed is when “enriched flour is listed as a prominent ingredient. Eat lean meats, fish or poultry. Don’t forget to include legumes (beans and lentils) as an alternative source of protein. Legumes are a wonderful, often overlooked whole food with lots of possibilities. Try having meatless meals using legumes as a protein source 2 or 3 times weekly. Replace sweetened beverages with water: Drinking water instead of soda or bottled iced tea has the potential to save a great many calories as well as reduce your overall sugar intake.

Trade bad fats for good fats: Sticking with lean protein sources and limiting fast food are the quickest ways to get saturated fat out of your life. Moderate amounts of nuts or seeds are a good way to include healthy fats. Don’t call this a diet: Stop thinking of how you eat as a diet! Instead, change your mindset and make a healthy eating plan your goal. Incorporating the simple, clean eating principles listed above can help you get closer to this ideal. Besides losing the extra calories, additives, fat and sodium that come with processed foods, your way of life becomes a bit greener too! The clean foods come without lots of packaging! Finding clean foods requires a simple sweep around the perimeter of your grocery store or a visit to your local farmers market. Keeping it clean and simple is a much easier way to tackle the business of weight control. You will feel better, look better, and actually be able to eat an abundance of healthy foods. By following the tips outlined here, you can start to celebrate the benefits and success that come with healthy eating. Gretchen Scalpi is a nutrition expert for Senior Nutrition Services.

PUZZLE ANSWER

INVITATION TO LINGERIE PARTY BRINGS BLUSH TO HESITANT GUEST DEAR ABBY: I'm a senior in high school and about to graduate. The week after graduation, one of my close friends is getting married. I have no qualms about the marriage, but I'm confused about the pre-wedding parties. The bride and groom are registered at three stores and have had a Tupperware party already. However, I have received an invitation to a lingerie party to which guests have been instructed to bring the bride lingerie with gift receipts attached. Am I wrong in thinking that buying intimate apparel is the responsibility of the couple? I plan to buy them a wedding gift from the registry, but I feel odd being asked to essentially contribute to their sex life. Abby, if I decline the invitation, what would be the proper way to do it? -- BRINGING A BLENDER IN MONTANA DEAR B.A.B.: If you are unable to attend the shower, all you need to say is you're unavailable on that date. You do not have to give a reason. However, lingerie showers can be a fun way for women to bond with each other. I once attended one at which a guest jokingly brought the bride a pair of handcuffs. (In Montana, a set of spurs might make an interesting gag gift.) However, if you prefer not to "contribute to the couple's sex life," why not bring a high-necked flannel nightgown? Your gift CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Tina Fey, 41; Chow Yun-Fat, 56; George Strait, 59; Reggie Jackson, 65 Happy Birthday: A change of heart, a change of plans and a change in lifestyle are ahead of you if you don't protect what you have. Things always look better from a distance but don't be fooled into thinking that you are not doing as well as others. Focus on your own goals instead of trying to outdo the competition. Your numbers are 5, 9, 18, 21, 29, 33, 46 ARIES (March 21-April 19): A financial change, reorganizing your personal budget or investing in long-term assets should be considered. Update your technological knowledge and your attitude to set yourself on a positive path. Don't be afraid to speak your mind. 5 stars TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Keep things to yourself until you are positive that sharing the information you have is not going to jeopardize the outcome. A money matter based on an emotional relationship has the potential to be settled if you are willing to make a couple of concessions. 3 stars GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your unpredictable nature will cause confusion for some. However, those who think like you will pitch in and help. A concerted effort will bring you the results you are looking for.

could be the talk of the party. Readers, care to offer any other gift suggestions? DEAR ABBY: I represent Operation Paperback: Recycled Reading for the Troops. Our 10,000 volunteers, at their own expense, collect gently used paperback books and send them to military members and organizations deployed all over the world. Since 1999, we have sent over a million books and have received thanks from Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Germany, ships at sea, and dozens of places on the globe where our military serves. Because units are continually being deployed, reassigned and recalled, we struggle to maintain current address lists. We would appreciate the assistance of your forum in spreading the word to service members and their families that they need only to go to operationpaperback.org to register, and we will see to it that they have quality reading material to provide an escape from their dayto-day trials. Thank you for your help. -- DAN BOWERS, RED LION, PA. DEAR DAN: What a wonderful offer. But be careful what you wish for, because Dear Abby readers are the most generous and patriotic people in the world!

Make sure you thank those who helped you out. 3 stars CANCER (June 21-July 22): If you are a participant, you will meet people who can be an asset when it comes to changing jobs or finding employment. Contacting people you have worked with in the past will lead to interesting opportunities. Uncertainty at home and in your personal life must be dealt with quickly. 3 stars LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may not agree with everyone you deal with, but at least hear what's being said before you make a judgment. Enjoy the company of older, more experienced individuals. A creative way to budget or handle your money will be revealed. 5 stars VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Don't worry too much about someone who is criticizing your every move. Taking a different approach to the way you do something will show your enthusiasm and ability to adapt. Love is in the stars. 2 stars LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You'll be able to come to terms with a lot of the personal issues you've been facing. You can make changes conducive to the lifestyle that suits your needs. You are closer to reaching your dreams than you think. 4 stars SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You have more going for you than you give yourself credit for.

Put your plans, your knowledge and your skills to the test. Love is highlighted, so don't ignore someone who needs a little tender loving care. 3 stars SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Don't get overly emotional about the little things said or done when what really counts is what you do and how you react. Opportunities can bring about favorable changes at home and at work if you play your cards right. Good fortune is within reach. 3 stars CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Hidden assets and opportunities through agencies, large corporations or financial institutions will develop but don't go overboard. Moderation and common sense will be required. Family dynamics are

CLOSE TO HOME

DEAR ABBY: My stepdaughter came and cleaned our house when my wife -- her mother -- was ill. I appreciated her efforts, until I noticed she had put the toilet brush in the dishwasher with the dishes. I quietly removed it. Am I overreacting because I no longer want to eat at her house? This made me extremely uncomfortable because most of our family gatherings are at her house. -- TURNED OFF IN TEXAS DEAR TURNED OFF: Ew! Had I been in your position, when I saw what she had done, I'd have hit high C. And I wouldn't have been subtle about removing the toilet brush from the dishwasher. What a gross lapse of judgment. I wouldn't want to eat at her house either, and I'd let my spouse know exactly why. (Please tell me your stepdaughter didn't learn this from her mother.)

Write Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069

improving. 3 stars AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don't trust anyone who promises the impossible or who has let you down in the past. Someone is likely to entice you but now is not the time to make a move that can disrupt your personal life. Emotional deception is apparent. 4 stars PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Emotional signals will not be easy to decipher and can cause you to misinterpret what someone wants. Ulterior motives are apparent, so be careful how you handle anyone who is being too generous or accommodating. 2 stars Birthday Baby: You are curious and unpredictable. You are expressive and creative and take on competition with great courage.
