MAGNOLIA
Featuring the subjective exploration and experimentation of a Magnolia Flower Skyla Harris s3751134
RATIONALE The subjective typographic encyclopaedia titled, Magnolia, documents the detailed experimental study based on the personal photographs and artwork of a magnolia flower created by the designer. The typographic forms created have been developed with a clear intention in mind to create an interaction between floral elements and traditional typefaces to produce what is now a highly experimental and conceptual alphabet. This typographic practice is inherently feminine and decorative in its organic use of shape and line and pastel colours of pink and blue. The distortion and adaptation of magnolia flower petals has allowed for distinguishing features of the conceptual typeface to emerge. Overlapping and intersecting lines, circular organic shapes that can be attributed to belong to the natural environment and the curvature of the letterforms lend the font a sense of handwritten or digitally drawn. The encyclopaedia is formatted according to five experimental themes. The collection opens with a completed spread of all letter forms created to formulate a conceptual alphabet. The publication then follows the experimental themes of form, mirror, layer, texture and stencil. Throughout the experimental process a multitude of different mediums were utilised such as collaging techniques, paint, digital technology and hand drawn elements as well. This allowed for the development of a diverse subjective typographic response to the original form of a Magnolia flower. The use of these mediums enhanced the created letterforms and allowed for further exploration of layering, texture and form that finally saw to the development of sensorial texts and a cohesive abstract alphabet.
