Recovery from mental illness, by definition, is an act of courage. It is not a single act, but countless courageous decisions and small steps taken day after day, that lead to a restored sense of hope, stability and effectiveness.

Courage survives and grows through acts of encouragement, and this is the role of Skyland Trail for our clients and their families. We provide the treatment, the environment and the compassionate support to reinforce and strengthen their determination to get better. Over the past 23 years, the combined power of our clients’ courage and Skyland Trail’s multi-dimensional encouragement has changed the future for thousands of adults with mental illness.

For Skyland Trail as an organization,we take courage from the steadfast encouragement we receive from the community – providing resources, volunteer leadership and inspiration so that we can become an ever greater force for health and strength in the lives of our clients and in our community.

1

CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT

A client recently described Skyland Trail as “a place to look forward from, which sums up exactly what we strive to be in the journey of recovery from mental illness. We want to be the solid foundation where clients get a secure footing that makes it possible to start moving toward health, confidence and productivity.

As the theme of this annual report conveys, the courage of the client and the encouragement that is integral to effective treatment work together to empower recovery. Both are essential to a successful journey. The past year brought growth in all of the indicators that show how Skyland Trail is regarded as a source of impactful treatment and related service. Admissions were up, as were referrals from physicians and mental health providers. Psychiatric assessments grew by more than 10 percent, affirming our rising reputation as an expert in evaluation and diagnosis of complicated mental health issues. Important progress was achieved as we focused on the critical issue of client length of stay. Increasing pressure from payer sources has decreased length of stay in treatment, often times well short of an ideal time frame for recovery. Last year, Skyland Trail began an intense effort to educate payers about our model of care, emphasizing the necessity of time requirements for effective treatment. While pressures remain, we have made real headway in these discussions. Additionally, we introduced a client engagement program that incentivizes committed participation from day one, in order to maximize the value of treatment time. Through these initiatives, Skyland Trail has made significant progress to assure that client needs are met with an appropriate length of stay.

2

Our mission always has been grounded in promoting knowledge as well as providing treatment. Skyland Trail strives to be a learning center for everyone we touch – clients, families, our own staff, peers in the mental health field, and the broader Atlanta community. Our reputation continued to grow nationally last year, reflecting both the stature of our professional staff among their mental health peers as well as a strategic marketing program to extend our footprint. Clients come to Skyland Trail from every region of the country, as do referrals and inquiries.

The past year brought substantial achievements in research, as you will see on page 6. We designed and implemented a robust outcomes initiative for tracking client progress on a weekly basis using best-in-class industry metrics.

Clients come to Skyland Trail from every region of the country, as do referrals and inquiries.

The benefits of this approach include the ability to adjust a client’s treatment program as needed, greater overall capacity for continuous quality improvement, and alignment with the measuring tools and validation methods that are broadly used both in academic circles and the insurance industry. Skyland Trail is well known for its community education programs focused on mental health issues. The inaugural Dorothy C. Fuqua Lecture Series was introduced last year, bringing thought leaders to Skyland Trail for educational forums. This series was instituted by close friends and family to honor Mrs. Fuqua’s 90th birthday and her decades of volunteer leadership and generous support of Skyland Trail. Equally gratifying, Skyland Trail is sustaining and building on the support of a strong community that values the important work we do. From special events to annual gifts, we surpassed our 2011 goals in fundraising as well as friend-raising. On behalf of our clients, and in support of their courage, we thank you for making Skyland Trail a priority in how you encourage mental health and bring positive change in the community.

Dual Diagnosis Services Skyland Trail offers treatment for consumers who have a primary diagnosis of mental illness with related substance abuse disorders. Dual Diagnosis Services provide a structured program, individualized for the client, to promote a drug-free and sober lifestyle. Group and individual psychotherapy help the client gain insight into the relationship between his or her substance abuse and mental illness, using evidence-based random drug screening, twelve-step recovery programs, and individualized planning with our Addiction Psychiatrist and certified substance abuse counselor.

Pastoral Counseling The pastoral counseling program helps clients deal not only with the larger existential questions of religious beliefs and experiences, but also those involving shame or guilt over actions taken while in active illness, or while struggling with religious ideations common to mental illness. In addition, participation in religion may help individuals with mental illness integrate more successfully into their communities by offering a more functional way to view and respond to others, and by providing a tool for coping with relationships and living.

Adjunctive Therapies Skyland Trail is an innovator in active therapies that engage our clients in their recovery process. Horticulture, art, music, drama and recreation provide purposeful activities and socialization opportunities suited to a wide array of client interests and abilities.

Family Support Families and other primary supporters play a vital role in a client’s recovery, and Skyland Trail works to provide constant support and education to these supporters. Through our Family Orientation, we hope to answer questions about mental illness and recovery, both in

ery general terms and specifically for clients at Skyland Trail. Our weekly
