BUILDING CONFIDENCE
You got this!
Untreated mental illness can destroy your faith in yourself and your hope for a better future. Our clients often enter treatment feeling entirely incapable of turning their lives around.
They may be looking for a cure…a magic pill…something outside of themselves that will erase the past and replace who they see in the mirror with someone new.
Working with our expert and caring professionals, clients learn instead to look in the mirror and love who they see – the same person they have always been –but with new insight, a new outlook, and new tools to manage what living with a mental health disorder will throw at them. They learn to feel capable and confident again.
Skyland Trail combines expert psychiatric care, whole person wellness, and a compassionate, healing community to restore our clients’ belief in a better future, one they can build for themselves.
In this report, you can learn more about how charitable support from people like you builds not only confidence, but also a healthy future and a path forward, for our clients and their families.
On behalf of our staff and board, I’d like to convey how your support year over year gives us confidence as an organization to continue to grow our reach and impact. We are preparing to announce an exciting new phase of growth, driven and inspired by our recent strategic planning initiative.
We look forward to your partnership in these efforts. Community support has been the cornerstone of our success to date.
Together, we got this!

2023: Year in Review
In 2023, Skyland Trail expanded staffing and family programming for our adult programs and integrated new therapeutic modalities to help treat teens with complex needs. Community partnerships allowed for unique client experiences, professional training opportunities, and community education.
ADULT PROGRAMS
A focus of 2023 was expanding our adult treatment team to meet increasing demand. Adding more experts has allowed us to serve more patients and offer additional programming.
Growing education and support for families was also a target. Families now have access to an expert Q&A within their first week. And a new family education series offers therapist-led, in-depth skills instruction in addition to our weekly STEP education and support program.
An alumni app launched in 2023 to improve connections among adult program graduates.
ADOLESCENT PROGRAMS
Our adolescent program significantly expanded programming in 2023. In addition to our core DBT and CBT curriculum, the residential program now offers group programming for teens with secondary mild to moderate substance use challenges. And Prolonged Exposure Therapy at the individual level meets the specific needs of adolescents with trauma-related disorders.
And a new level system provides engagement incentives and a path to treatment success.
EDUCATION
■ Six webinars engaged more than 1,154 mental health professionals, educators, and caregivers
2,705+
parents, students, and community leaders were reached through presentations to area schools, businesses and civic groups
■ Presentations to Atlanta area schools, businesses, and civic groups reached more than 2,705 parents, students, and community leaders
Growing partnerships continue to strengthen our clinical team and community support.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
■ Our psychiatry, research & outcomes, and education departments established new partnerships with Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Oglethorpe University.
■ New partnerships in 2023 with Atlanta nonprofit organizations – including the Georgia State Golf Association and Birds Georgia – are expanding patient enrichment opportunities, from educational bird watching in Atlanta parks to adaptive golf.
■ A partnership with Hope Homes Recovery Services is helping remove financial barriers to needed recovery residence services for adult day treatment patients.
BEHIND THE SCENES
■ Our finance department added and expanded our insurance contracts, including a new contract with ComPsych, to expand access to treatment.
■ Our entire organization completed cultural equity training as part of the organization’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Challenges and Solutions
THE CHALLENGE
Misdiagnosis
Years of treatment for an inaccurate or incomplete diagnosis leads to treatment exhaustion and loss of hope.
Skyland Trail patients often have complex symptoms and treatment histories. Here are just a few of the many challenges patients face paired with the Skyland Trail programming designed to address those problems.
HOW WE HELP
Diagnostic Clarity
A diagnostic assessment at admission and clarifying assessments throughout treatment ensure patients are matched with the most effective treatments for their diagnoses and symptoms.
Loss of Connection
Symptoms can lead to isolation, avoidance, or impulsive behaviors that interfere with important family and peer connections.
Social and Family Engagement
Through peer connections, clients learn they are not alone. And through individual, group and family therapy, clients improve communication and interpersonal skills.
Unhealthy Daily Routines
Irregular sleep patterns, poor hygiene, or unhealthy eating often accompany an episode of mental illness.
Reset to Healthy Living
Structured daily schedules re-establish sleep and meal schedules. 24/7 support encourages personal care and hygiene.
Unhealthy Behavior Patterns
Without insight or skills, people may try to alleviate pain or suffering with alcohol, substances, self-harm, or impulsive behaviors.
Skills-Based Learning
Clients learn how their disorder affects their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They learn to identify triggers and early warning signs and strategies to respond in healthy ways.
Lack of Interest
Interests, hobbies, and other meaningful activities are abandoned or avoided, leaving no opportunity for joy, fun, or exploration.
Whole Person Approach
As their symptoms and mood improve, clients explore art, music, nature, recreation, and spiritual resources with our experts as tools to stay healthy.
Madison: Rediscovering My Sparkle
I always felt different – a little more outgoing, a little more sharing, a little more extroverted. I thought that was my “sparkle,” my special skill.
Then in my early teens, I started to be ostracized and had a hard time relating to people. I started thinking instead, “maybe there’s something wrong with me.”
Over time, my struggles cascaded to include being bullied and challenges with organizational skills that would later be attributed to ADHD and PTSD. Without insight or skills to cope, I defaulted to some self-destructive behaviors.
I was unable to keep a job. I was using substances to numb the reality of feeling like I couldn’t work towards my goals anymore. I had this mindset that I had a dark cloud over my head and that my life was just going to be a consistent series of unfortunate events. I felt that I had generated some sort of bad karma and that I wouldn’t be able to dig myself out of the hole that I had created.
Once my family realized that I wasn’t going to be able to help myself, they said, “I know that you’re unable to see this, but we’re going to continue to push for you to find a way out of this dark place.” And, eventually, they helped me find Skyland Trail.
At Skyland Trail, I realized how much the way I saw myself had become distorted.
I consistently had epiphanies, “I can’t believe I thought that about myself for so long!” Or, “I can’t believe
I’ve been living my life like this without knowing that there was another way!”
I was really nervous about the idea of labels. My therapist helped me understand that a diagnosis was a tool for my treatment team to create a formula for success… for me. It wasn’t a label. It was information and an attribute, one of many attributes that all come together as building blocks to create how my mind works and what is me.
I also realized that my upbringing hadn’t necessarily prepared me for dealing with life. Skyland Trail served as boot camp or basic training. I was able to see myself as capable, disarm all the defense mechanisms I had put up for protection, and gain these tools so that I was ready for life.
Today, I enjoy my career as an aesthetic professional. I would describe my life as very full, very active and engaging. I like putting my life into my work and into my family and friends outside of that. And when life becomes overwhelming, as it does for most people sometimes, I find wilderness and nature to be a great place to re-center myself, focus on all the positives, and be grateful for this life that I built.
And so my mental health journey, while it continues, has really been full circle. I started by thinking I was different and special, then believing I was different in a negative and distorted way, and then I was able to come back and embrace the parts of myself that make me truly special.
I was able to lift the shadows and find my sparkle again.
Community Support
Why We Give: Lillian and Larry Connolly
When I was young, my father stridently supported mental health causes. We lived in Cincinnati at the time. I continue to hold my father in high regard. If he thought supporting mental health organizations was important, that would give me pause to continue to do the same.
Any student of history knows that mental health concerns are a part of the human experience. People have always seemed to struggle. As a trustee at Washington and Lee University, I learned about the specific impact of mental health challenges on college students. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know improving our understanding of mental illness and increasing access to treatment are endeavors worthy of support.
Here in Atlanta, Lillian and I learned about Skyland Trail after a friend invited us to attend Benefits of Laughter. We heard stories from clients and families who were able to reclaim their lives. As we subsequently became acquainted with the board and staff leadership, we were impressed with the continuity, gradual expansion, and overall health of the organization.
When we sold our company in 2012, we set up a foundation. Our funding goal is to help children and address poverty in Georgia. In looking for worthy institutions to support, Skyland Trail checked a lot of boxes. With the adolescent program opening in 2019, and the need for mental health services exploding, it wasn’t hard to recognize Skyland Trail as worthy of investment.
We are confident that our gifts to Skyland Trail make a difference. Atlanta is fortunate to have Skyland Trail.
— Larry ConnollyAt Acuity Brands, we’re committed to reducing the stigma around mental health both in and out of the workplace. Our Mind Matters Employee Resource Group was created to educate and elevate the dialogue around mental health. That’s why we’re proud to support Skyland Trail and the life-changing work they’re doing to provide individuals facing mental health challenges with the tools they need to thrive.
Karen Holcom Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Executive Sponsor, Mind Matters ERGWhy We Give Back: Matt and Teresa F
Since 2017, we have supported Skyland Trail through donations to the Mark C. West Financial Aid Program. Our daughter’s experience during her Residential Treatment for Adults gave her self-awareness, developed her coping skills, and gave her the determination to start living her life meaningfully at the tender age of 22. Skyland Trail provided the support, treatment, and community to empower our daughter in navigating the rest of her college years and her life and onto a successful career. Without Skyland Trail and the support provided through the financial aid program, we could not have helped our daughter regain her footing. We are a truly Grateful Family and are honored to help other families support their loved ones.

Giving Highlights
Skyland Trail was one of 10 Atlanta-area nonprofit organizations that serve children and youth selected by the Zeist Foundation Board to receive a Commemorative Gift in 2023. The $150,000 Commemorative Gift, which will support the adolescent program, is in honor of Jean and George Brumley and the family members who carry on their legacy today.
The Savannah Sheats Scholarship Fund was established in 2023 through the wishes of Savannah’s family and with gifts made in Savannah’s memory. The fund will help provide financial aid to families seeking effective treatment and ensure that future generations have access to quality mental health services. Skyland Trail is privileged to maintain the Savannah Sheats Scholarship Fund as a lasting tribute in memory of Savannah and all who loved her.
Our adolescent program received more than $80,000 through the Atlanta Charity Clays events thanks to 2023 event chairs, Suzanne Sullivan and Duncan Gibbs.
The Zeist Foundation sponsored an Atlanta Habitat for Humanity house in Fall of 2024 in honor of the Brumley family. Skyland Trail community members volunteered to help with the Habitat build.
The Woodward Foundation contributed $25,000, which, combined with funds raised through the Skyland Trail Associates Fund in 2023 are allowing for upgrades across our campuses to improve accessibility for people with mobility challenges.
We were thrilled to receive $69,000 from the Living Out Loud Celebrity Golf Tournament hosted by SagerStrong Foundation.
Skyland Trail received $8,400 from the Atlanta Braves in 2023. Blooper, the Atlanta Braves mascot, raised $4,200 in donations through seat visits, which was matched by The Atlanta Braves Foundation. In November, Blooper visited the Skyland Trail adult campus to present the funds and say hello to clients.
Each year Morris Brandon fifth grade students complete a group research project. In 2023, this group chose to study teen mental health and, as part of their project, held a bake sale to raise funds to support Skyland Trail.

I had watched my daughter try to survive with depression and anxiety. I was giving her all the love and support that I knew how to give. Nothing kept her from not wanting to live. I knew she needed help. I knew I needed help.
We had found help! Skyland exceeded all expectations! I loved the communication with the therapists. It felt like team work. My daughter loved being around others similar to herself. Then to make it even better, school, exercise, and nutrition are part of their schedule. It truly is a mind, body, and soul experience - if you let it!
She gave it her all. Skyland, quite literally, saved her life. Life can still be hard, and she has the tools now to work through it. Thank you, Skyland!

Skyland Trail is indeed a gift to our community. Bryan and I know of few families not impacted by mental health and are grateful for the caring professionals working to treat those in need. Not only is the care excellent, but the education provided to all of us is amazing, allowing us to begin to comprehend the complexity of caring for so many and promoting mental wellness in all of us. We are especially pleased that Skyland is now treating substance use as a dual diagnosis since it is so often related to a patient’s mental health. We invite everyone to learn more about mental health and support this life-changing organization. – Margaret Stickney, Advisory Board Member

We believe in the holistic solutions Skyland trail provides for their clients, their families and the greater community. As mental health issues continue to affect us and those around us, we are lucky to have Skyland Trail and their amazing staff right here in Atlanta.
Our wish is that everyone has access to help to live a fuller life.

I had always heard about the wonderful work of Skyland Trail, but it wasn’t until the Adolescent Campus opened, and I was invited to tour the facility and hear about the services available to adolescents, that I really began to know and understand the program.
Now, as a member of the Adolescent Advisory Council, I continue to learn more, and am struck by the depth and the quality of the services available to individuals, beginning at age 14. I am honored to serve on the Advisory Council, and thrilled to support all that Skyland Trail does for the Atlanta community and beyond. Skyland Trail is a treasure! – Marifred Cilella, Adolescent Advisory Council

In Memory
First Lady Rosalynn Carter
In November 2023, the world lost an incredible advocate for mental health, and Skyland Trail lost a dear friend. Mrs. Carter was a driving force in the field of mental health for more than four decades. She was a member of the Georgia Governor’s Commission to Improve Services to the Mentally and Emotionally Handicapped in the early 1970s. During President Carter’s administration, she helped bring about passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980. She instituted the annual Georgia Mental Health Forum for professionals and consumers, and she hosted the annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy for over 30 years. Mrs. Carter launched the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism, and co-authored several award-winning books. She was an honorary fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and in 1999, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
It was an honor to have worked with and known Mrs. Carter. Her legacy of kindness and compassion for people from all walks of life, particularly those who face suffering, is truly an inspiration.
– Beth Finnerty, President & CEO
Walton Harrison Reeves, MD
Dr. Reeves, who served on the Skyland Trail Advisory Board from 2000 to 2004, passed away in October 2023. Medicine was his life’s passion. Dr. Reeves practiced internal medicine and hematology in Atlanta for nearly five decades. Throughout his career, he served as a mentor and role model for young physicians. In addition, he worked closely
with the Georgia Pastoral Care Association and taught in clinical pastoral education. Following retirement, he was founding medical director for Lenbrook Square and also served on advisory boards for Emory University’s Healthcare Ethics Consortium of Georgia and Reinhardt University’s Funk Heritage Museum.
