“Architecture has to be greater than just architecture. It has to address social values, as well as technical and aesthetic values. On top of that, the one true gift that an architect has is his or her imagination. We take something ordinary and elevate it to something extraordinary. -samuel mockbee

The Dance of the Spaces the arms
The Dance of the Spaces signifies the integrity of the Moulin Rouge and the rich tradition encompassing its 115 years of artful existence. While a possible solution is to place a permanent and static structure within the confines of an enclosed site, another is to let the iconic site breathe with fluid movement and periodic transformation. Rather than constructing a building which statically houses function, why not implement an installation which dynamically creates it?

The “Arms, through an intricate system of motors, pulleys, cables, bent titanium alloy, and structural LED screens, brings to life the Parisian night. Positively supplementing its sistering building, it provides not only a place where the art of dancing will be taught but a space that dances itself. Furthermore, these transforming arms can become whatever one wants them to be. From a stage where dancers can perform to the seating where crowds gather to watch, the Arms and their supplemental mechanisms transform into the spaces to perform the programmatic functions.

Found Objects | Assemblage figurative sculpture
The found-objects piece is a figurative sculpture crafted to represent changelessness. A multitude of found objects - used, torn, and worn nuts, bolts, railroad spikes and parts - unorganized and randomly placed become tied together using 12-guage hanger wire and lots of tension. No glues or fixatives were used and nothing was welded. The product is an unconventional sculpture representing internal tension and stress in physical representative form.

Center for a United Faith multi-faith church
Prevalent among religions is the spiritual mind set of separating oneself from the profanities of earth and transcending toward the metaphysical and supernatural. The intent was to create a universal, simple yet powerful space within which believers of many faiths could congregate and worship; this, coupled with the respecting and honoring of other faiths, is the essence of building a community of persons with diverse beliefs.

MY TIME IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORKPLACE HAS TAUGHT ME MANY THINGS. whILE PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROFESSION IS ACQUIRED OVER TIME, the experience gained through constant collaboration and interaction with colleagues, clients, and consultants has set the foundation for my desire to practice architecture. Often I feel like architecture becomes more about the structure than the people. The beauty behind Architecture is that it is about the people.

The city of Chicago, lush with dense cityscape and landscape, provides a natural progression of the five senses as one moves from the inner city to the coast by Lake Michigan. The beauty of the city lies within its ability to carry people throughout a multitude of environments, distinct in their respective beauty, within one embodiment. Similarly, the concept presented is to capture this sensual embodiment and consequently project it onto the site, Northerly Island. Collectively, one’s congnitive recognition of the senses consequently transcends to an entirely new experience.
