Site Design
A study model was built in order to get a full understanding of the site. Topography is relatively mild up to the rivers edge where it drops dramatically. Most of the site is within the floodplain boundary. Areas of active recreation are proposed to be placed outside of the floodplain.
Goals
The three major goals of the design are: 1. Reclaim and restore the site in a way that emulates nature and natural systems. 2. Provide a multi-use space for both passive and active recreation. 3. Enhance the community through engaging and interactive public art.
The proposed classroom is made up of large stone plinths located within a secluded stand of trees.

close proximity to major recreation and social opportunities. It is vital for Pocatello to capitalize on this energy and use it strategically moving forward. Currently, many Pocatellans aren’t as proud of their city as they should be. With careful planning and implementation, city leaders can reverse this trend and reveal what an amazing place Pocatello truly is to both current residents and visitors. Pocatello is the county seat and largest city of Bannock County, located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Idaho. It is the principal city of the Pocatello metropolitan area, which encompasses all of Bannock and Power counties. As of the 2010 census the population of Pocatello was 54,255. Pocatello is the home of Idaho State University and was founded as an important stop on the first railroad in Idaho during the gold rush, later becoming an important center for agriculture. Before permanent human settlement the region was inhabited by the Shoshone and Bannock Tribes.

Warehouse District

Major Factors The project boundary includes 5 major factors: the Portneuf River, the Union Pacific Railroad, the historic Warehouse District, Terry Street, and Idaho State University. All of these come together to give the area unique opportunities and constraints. The Portneuf River is currently leveed or channelized, reducing it’s visual, ecological, and recreational impact. The Union Pacific Railroad is very active and has only 3 crossings in the city - a huge physical and social barrier. The Warehouse District is in the midst of a Renaissance, with many buildings being revitalized, including the recent completion of the Museum of Clean. Idaho State University is the largest employer in the region and acts as a cultural and physical landmark. Connecting all of these is Terry Street, which has potential to become major force in directing the future of Pocatello.
11
Design Principles Bench to Bench Bench to Bench is a symbolic way of framing the need to connect the entire valley. The major intent of the design is to connect Pocatello - physically and socially. This goal will be achieved through revitalizing and bolstering Benton Street, Terry Street, and other important thoroughfares.
Integrate Histories Pocatello has a vast array of incredible histories - the Native peoples, railroad, geography, geology, and many others. These histories should not be ignored, especially those that seem sensitive or “off limits.” Through leveraging, understanding, and integrating these histories into the future development of Pocatello, important chapters won’t be forgotten.
Capitalize on Identity Pocatello has the foundations to create a place with a unique and desirable identity. It is important to work with these existing opportunities to elevate Pocatello’s identity. Proposed changes will capitalize on existing amenities - proximity to nature, rich history, historic architecture, and sense of community. Adding new businesses, parks, infrastructure and housing will embolden Pocatello’s regional presence.
Local Economic Growth New development will be focused on local economies - Local and niche businesses and products promote pride within a community. It is important for local businesses to be provided spaces to grow and thrive. Strategic revitalization of the Warehouse district will provide a large amount of space and opportunity for local businesses.
University Connection The university and community are disconnected. In order to bring Pocatello to the next level, a new standard of integration between the University and community must be set. Proposed enhancements must attract and retain students, providing permeability between the university and community. As both Pocatello and the University expand, they must align their goals to provide integration physically and socially. Design principle diagrams drawn by Emmeline Hoover

Potential for Revitalization Through rigorous land use and hard/soft analysis, potential areas for redevelopment and focused design study were identified. A large amount of warehouses are currently vacant, but recent zoning changes allow for conversion into mixed use housing developments. Because of its proximity to ISU and downtown Pocatello, the Warehouse District is a perfect place for affordable housing and local businesses to flourish.

ISU Entry Plaza The new plaza integrates the university and community socially and physically. It draws students from campus and connects directly to the Portneuf River via the revitalized Terry Street.
Iconic Entry The University’s location is central and strategic, but it Warehouse is currently District isolated along 1st avenue with little connection to its surroundings. The new entry plaza breaks through a barrier of trees and connects campus directly to Terry Street. The plaza will include seating, plantings, and sculpture to create an iconic and pleasant entry into campus while providing more direct connection to the Warehouse District and proposed pedestrian bridge.

Informed Inspiration Pocatello’s geography is highly legible and prominent - valleys and peaks undulate and melt into the valley floor and can be seen from virtually any point. The beautiful landscape stuck with me and inspired several abstract design sketches. These sketches were meant to reflect the mountain layers and also evoke a sense of fluidity. When we began to design the bridge and ramp system, it seemed like a good opportunity to use this idea as a way to disguise the stairs in a sculptural way.

Capitalize on Identity The new Portneuf Valley Bridge, adjoining plaza, and ADA compliant ramp provide a wealth of choice for residents of Pocatello. It acts as the culmination of the 5 design principles. The bridge provides a physical connection across the railroad - embracing the rich history of the railroad instead of ignoring or trying to hide it. The structure will act as an iconic identity for the city and will help ensure that Pocatello continues to serve as a regional destination.

Delicate Ecologies The Hinckley Ranch site contains a vital migration corridor that connects Middle Fork Canyon to Pineview Reservoir. A proposed conservation easement will ensure that the sensitive and ecologically rich area will not be developed. Currently, Ogden Valley is amid a wave of growth the population is projected to double in 20 years. The environmental health of the valley relies on the preservation of the important habitats and corridors found on Hinckley Ranch.

In its current condition, the Ayers Residences lacks legibility, continuity, or comfort. The client wanted a space that felt enclosed, relaxed, and personal. To achieve this, a central courtyard was placed in between the existing patio and a proposed covered swim spa. The courtyard acts as both a connecting element and an intimate space for relaxation and entertaining. With plenty of seating, an outdoor kitchen, and entertainment space the new backyard is a perfect place for a myriad of activities. Design sketch of circulation and program layout.

Bastian Agricultural Community Client USU Extension Project Type Group Year 2017 Located on existing agricultural land, the Bastian Agricultural Community is an inclusive neighborhood centered around the radical idea of local food production. As the future of food production becomes more uncertain, the Bastian Agricultural Community will be an example of local, sustainable, and practical food production to people throughout Utah. Multiple housing and lot size typologies will accommodate all household types. Each household has a private food production area with shared processing facilities. All of this is centered on a central open space and community center. The community center encapsulates the ideals of the community and provides space for gatherings, events, and education outreach.
The Community Center is a place for community residents to gather and celebrate food. It also has space for classrooms, exhibits, and events.
